  • The magnetic separation of Nd-Fe-B powders prepared by melt-spun and HDDR processes was investigated. The experiments show that the ununiform melt-spun powders can be separated into various standards by means of magnetic separation method. The magnetic powders with higher properties were obtained by the use of suitable separating field. For example, the properties of ununiform melt-spun powders are Br=7.95 kG, iHc=9.93 kOe and (BH)max=10.2 MGOe before separating. Through separating in different magnetic fields, the powders obtained with a separating field of 780 Oe has the optimum properties of Br=7.7 kG, iHc=11.0 kOe and (BH)max=15.3 MGOe. The magnetic properties of the HDDR magnetic powder are hardly separated by the magnetic separation method.

  • $Gd_{1-x}Ho_xNi$ melt-spun ribbons were fabricated by a single-roller melt spinning method. All the compounds crystallize in an orthorhombic CrB-type structure. The Curie temperature ($T_C$) was tuned between 46 and 99 K by varying the concentration of Gd and Ho. A spin reorientation (SRO) transition is observed around 13 K. Different from $T_C$, the SRO transition temperature is almost invariable for all compounds. Two peaks of magnetic entropy change (${\Delta}S_M$) were found. One at the higher temperature range was originated from the paramagnet-ferromagnet phase transition and the other at the lower temperature range was caused by the SRO transition. The maximum of ${\Delta}S_M$ around $T_C$ is almost same. The other maximum of ${\Delta}S_M$ around SRO transition, however, had significantly positive relationship with x. It reached a maximum about $8.2J\;kg^{-1}\;K^{-1}$ for x = 0.8. Thus double large ${\Delta}S_M$ peaks were obtained in $Gd_{1-x}Ho_xNi$ melt-spun ribbons with the high Ho concentration. And the refrigerant capacity power reached a maximum of $622J\;kg^{-1}$ for x = 0.6. $Gd_{1-x}Ho_xNi$ ribbons could be good candidate for magnetic refrigerant working in the low temperature especially near the liquid nitrogen temperature range.

  • Nanostructed high energy Nd-Fe-B based bulk magnet can be prepared by hot-working process (hot press and die-upset) from melt-spun amorphous or nanocrystalline powder.[1] Recently, we have investigated a modified method, current-applied pressure-assisted (CAPA) process, to produce nanocrystalline isotropic and anisotropic NdFeB magnets. The process consists of current-applied pressing the melt-spun powders to obtain isotropic precursor subsequent current-applied deforming the precursor to obtain textured magnet.[2-3] (omitted)

  • Al-8Fe-2Mo-2V-1Zr alloys were prepared by the gas atomization/hot extrusion and the melt spinning/hot extrusion. For the gas atomized and extruded alloy, equiaxed grains with the average size of 400 nm and finely distributed dispersoids with their particle sizes ranging from 50nm to 200nm were observed. For the melt spun and hot extrusion processed alloy, refined microstructural feature consisting of equiaxed grains with the average size of 200nm and fine dispersoids with their particle sizes under 50nm appeared to exhibit a difference in microstructure. Strength of the latter alloy was higher than that for the former alloy up to elevated temperatures.

  • Magnetic properties and microstructures of $Nd_{12}Fe_{80}B_{6}(Nb,\;M)$ (M=Ti/Cu/Ga) melt-spun ribbons prepared by single wheel technique have been studied. The results of microstructural study have shown that Ga is effective for the orientation of c-axis normal to the ribbon plane. The Ga-added melt-spun ribbon, $Nd_{12}Fe_{80}B_{6}(Nb,\;Ga)$, quenched at $V_{s}=17.9\;m/s$ was mostly composed of fine grains of about 30 nm in size with the textured free-side surface. The powder of this ribbon aligned in mag-netic field showd a high remanence of 0.87 T which was about 5 % higher than that of ribbon itself. It is believed that there is a possibility to fabricate a new type of HIREM melt-spun ribbon with highly textured free-side surface.

  • $Nd_{14}Fe_{80}B_6$ ribbon alloy was manufactured with using melt-spinning method and analyzed the magnetic properties according to the manufacturing conditions. The microstructure and magnetic properties of melt-spun ribbons are sensitively dependent on the quench rate and annealing conditions. As-quenched $Nd_{14}Fe_{80}B_6$ ribbons with optimum magnetic properties are obtained at wheel speed($v_s$) of about 20m/sec and over quenched ribbons show optimum magnetic properties at $v_s$=22m/see when annealed for 30 minutes at $600^{\circ}C$ under vacuum. The crystallization temperature($T_k$) of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phase is about $595^{\circ}C$ in the DTA analysis.

  • Influence of small additions ($\leq$2.0 at.%) of Al, Ti, Co, and Ni on the microstructural development and the magnetic properties of melt-spun Fe-Bd-C alloys was investigated. Addition of these elements tended to stabilize the crystallization of as-spun ribbons. Especially, Al and Ti preferred to stabilize$ Fe_{17}Nd_2C_x.$ The average grain size of Fe17Nd2Cx (0.1~0.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$), obtained by a proper annealing, in the ribbon treated with 0.5 at.% additive was much smaller than that of additive-free ribbons, which would be the major source of large increase in coercivity. Among the additives, Ni was very effective to increase the coercivity whereas Co had beneficial effect on $T_c.$ By adding 0.5 at.% Ni, intrinsic coercivities of more than 1.4 T, 40~50% higher than that (~1.0T) of additive-free ribbons, can be obtained after annealing at 750~80$0^{\circ}C$.

  • A petroleum-based isotropic pitch fiber spun by melt-blown method was oxidized in air flow at various conditions. The oxidized pitch fiber obtained was tested for its infusibility and its elemental composition during the process of stabilization. The structural changes were traced by using solvent solubility, FT-IR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The samples showed a gradual increase in weight with increasing the oxidization temperature. The weight gain of sample oxidized at $320^{\circ}C$ for 10 min was about 4.5%. The concentration of the pyridine and toluene soluble fraction decreased with an increase in stabilization temperatures. The oxygen uptaken in the stabilization process converted aliphatic side chains into the carbonyl groups. As stabilization proceeded, the more ether and carboxylic acid groups were formed through the oxidations of aldehyde and primary alcohol, and then the carboxylic acid was dehydrated to be aromatic anhydride.

  • The aging effects on the characteristics of the melt spun Cu based shape memory alloys have been investigated by the microhardness test, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. After aged for specific times, hardness of the ribbons began to increase and shape memory capacity diminished. At the initial stage of aging the austenitic transformation temperatures increased gradually, but at last became nearly constant: That is, the aging deteriorated the thermal stability. The increase in hardness was due to the formation of the $\gamma_2$ precipitates. The loss in the shape memory capacity was due to the decrement of solute atoms in the matrix by the formation of the $\gamma_2$ precipitates. In this study, it was confirmed that Mn is an effective element for Improving the thermal stability.

  • The mechnial properties such as fracture strength, ductility and fatigue strength of Cu shape memory alloy are lower than those of Ti-Ni SMA, because of their high elastic anisotropy and large grain size. And in order to improve the mechanical property of Cu SMA, some techniques such as casting method by addition of refining element, powder metallurgy and rapid solidification process have been studied on the refinement of the grain size of Cu SMA. This study was carried out to refine the grain size of CuAlNi SMA by applying the melt spinning method. According to this study, the conclusions are as follows; - grain size of the melt-spun ribbon was about $1\mum$ - there was not change in grain size, although increasing of hot pressing temperature -grain size of the hot-extruded specimen was about $30-40\mum$, it is more refiner than that of castings
