  • Ni-base amorphous alloys were manufactured using melt-spinning and Cu-mold die casting methods. Amorphous formability, the supercooled liquid region before crystallization and mechanical properties were examined. The reduced glass transition temperature and the supercooled liquid region of $Ni_{51} Nb_{20} Zr_9 Ti_9 Co_8 Cu_3$alloy were 0.621 and 46 K respectively. $Ni_{51} Nb_{20} Zr_9 Ti_9 Co_8 Cu_3$ alloy was produced in the rod shape 3mm diameter using the Cu-mold die casting. Hardness, compression strength, elongation and elastic modulus of the alloy were 850 DPN, 2.75 GPa, 1.8% and 150 GPa respectively. Moreover, compression strength of 2.75 GPa was the highest value in the amorphous bulk alloy produced up to now.

  • Fe-Cr-Al and Fe-Cr-Al-Hf alloys prepared either by arc melting or by single roll casting(melt spinning) were exposed to air isothermally at 900~$1100^{\circ}C$. Whisker-like alumina was observed on the surface of the specimens when oxidized at $900^{\circ}C$, but convoluted alumina above $1000^{\circ}C$. All the Hf-free specimens and Hf-added specimens produced by single roll casting formed only external scale mainly composed of $Al_2O_3$ after oxidation at 900~$1100^{\circ}C$ for 100 hours, but Hf-added specimen produced by arc melting formed Hf-rich internal oxides below the thin external $Al_2O_3$ scale except at $900^{\circ}C$. Most of the rapidly solidified Fe-Cr-Al alloys showed smaller weight gains than conventionally casted ones besides Hf-added one oxidized at $1100^{\circ}C$.

  • PP-PHE blends were prepared by mechanical blending using relatively high moecular weight polyhydrozyether(PHE) and popypropylene polymers. PP-PHE blends were prepared and characterized for the purpose of obtaining a dycable PP fibers with the composition of less than 10 wt.% of PHE. 1)yeable PP fibers were acquired through the melt spinning of the PP-PHE blend of comprising less than 10 wt.% of PHE. The resultant fibers had tensile strength of 2~3 g/d, elongation of 330~600%, initial modulus of 22~46 g/d and yield stress of 1.0 g/d, and exhibited markedly improved dyeing ability such as higher absorbance, higher dye adsorption and deeper shade than those of pure PP fiber.

  • It has been reported in the technical literature that orotic acid can be used in order to induce improved crystallization of biodegradable and biocompatible polymers like poly(L-lactic acid), polyhydroxybutyrate and poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyhexaonat). The expected advantage of the changed crystalline structure is a reinforcing effect of the polymers. A lot of papers reported about the application of inorganic and organic agents for acceleration of heterogeneous nucleation. This study reports on an attempt to use orotic acid as appropriate non-toxic nucleating agent for improving mechanical properties of isotactic polypropylene. Special attention is given to demonstrate the effect of nucleation in a typical melt spinning process in order to improve the mechanical properties. The effects were demonstrated using rheology, thermal analysis and tensile testing.

  • Relations between giant magnetoresistance (GMR) characteristic, magnetic properties and structure were investigated in Cu90Co10 alloy obtained by melt spinning in which GMR was enhanced by appropriate annealing. The structure of the annealed sample is not homogeneous (though the sizes distribution of the majority of Co-particles is not very wide but much larger particles are also present). On the other hand, the GMR characteristics differs from that expected theoretically for identical superparamagnetic particles. It is shown that ther main sources of the observed non-quadratic magnetoresistance dependence on magnetization are differentialted surface to volume ratio of superparamagnetic particles and the ferromagnetic phase contribution to the total magnetization which was calculated applying the new method.

  • A series of Fe-P-B and Fe-Si-B amorphous alloys with high Fe contents exceeding 90 wt.% was successfully prepared by combining flux treatment and melt-spinning technique. The effects of Fe content and the flux treatment on the thermal and magnetic properties of amorphous alloys were studied. The glass-forming ability and the thermal stability of amorphous ribbons can be improved by a flux treatment, revealing the effective removal of heterogeneous nucleation sites in the ribbons through the flux treatment. It was found that Fe-Si-B ribbons exhibit higher saturation magnetization levels than Fe-P-B ribbons.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop silicon carbide fiber showing an excellent mechanical properties under highly oxidative conditions at high temperature. Polycarbosilane(PCS) as a preceramic precursor was used for making the SiC fiber. PCS fiber was taken by melt spinning method followed by melting the PCS at $300{\sim}350^{\circ}C$ in N2 gas. The Curing of PCS fiber was carried out in air oxygen chamber, prior to high temperature pyrolysis. Degree of cure was calculated by characteristic peak's ratio of Si-H to $Si-CH_3$ in FT-IR spectra before and after curing of PCS fiber. The properties of SiC fiber was affected greatly by the degree of cure. The SiC fiber produced by controlling fiber tension during heat treatment showed good properties. The SiC fiber exposed to $1000^{\circ}C$ at air from 1 min. up to maximum 50 hrs showed around 60% reduction in tensile strength. We found that large amount of carbon content on the fiber surface after long-term exposure has resulted in lower tensile strength.

  • A new class of LC-resonator for micro magnetic sensor device was invented and fabricated by means of MEMS technique. The micro LC-resonator consists of a solenoidal micro-inductor with a bundle of soft magnetic microwire cores and a capacitor connected in parallel to the micro-inductor. The core magnetic material is a tiny glass coated $Co_{83.2}B_{3.3}Si_{5.9}Mn_{7.6}$ microwire fabricated by a glasscoated melt spinning technique. The core materials were annealed at various temperatures $150^{\circ}C,\;200^{\circ}C\;,250^{\circ}C\;,$ and $300^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in a vacuum to improve soft magnetic properties. The solenoidal micro-inductors fabricated by MEMS technique were $500{\sim}1,000{\mu}m$ in length with $10{\sim}20$ turns. The changes of inductance as a function of external magnetic field in micro-inductors with properly annealed microwire cores were varied as much as 370%. Since the permeability of ultra soft magnetic microwire is changing rapidly as a function of external magnetic field. The inductance ratio as well as magnetoimpedance ratio (MIR) in a LC-resonator was varied drastically as a function of external magnetic field. The MIR curves can be tuned very precisely to obtain maximum sensitivity. A prototype magnetic sensor device consisting of the developed microinductors with a multivibrator circuit was test successfully.

  • Change in phases, microstructures, and magnetic properties by the variation of quench rate and heat treatment were investigated for melt-spun $Fe_{77}Pr_{15}C_8$ ribbons. The amorphization of as-spun ribbons increased as the quench rate increased. As a result, the ribbon quenched at 40 m/s was almost entirely amorphous. Similarly to cast alloys, the primary phase in crystalline ribbons quenched at 10 m/s was $\alpha$-Fe followed by the secondary $Fe_{17}Pr_2C_x$. Crystalline phases were still dominant in the ribbon spun at 20 m/s, but in this case crystallization of $Fe_{17}Pr_2C_x$ was remarkable with a little suppression of $\alpha$-Fe. At 30 m/s an amorphous phase obviously dominated in the as-spun ribbons with small fraction of crystals. Therefore, substantial amount of hard magnetic $Fe_{14}Pr_2C$ was not obtained from the as-spun state but, as in cast alloys, produced only by a solid-state transformation. Within a few minutes fine grains of $Fe_{14}Pr_2C$ were easily obtained at relatively low temperature when the degree of amorphization of as-spun ribbons was higher. The grain size of $Fe_{14}Pr_2C$ was well less than 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The ribbons quenched at 20 or 30 m/s yielded higher coercivities after heat treatment.

  • In the present study the effect of cooling rate during solidification on the microstructural characteristics of Al-xAg (x = 31, 33, 35 at.%) in-situ binary eutectic composites has been investigated. To provide a wide range of cooling rate three different casting techniques, i.e. conventional casting, injection casting, and melt spinning have been used. The observed microstructure is very much dependent on the cooling rate. The fcc ${\alpha}$-Al and hcp $Ag_2Al$ phases exhibits an orientation of (111)Al//(0001)$Ag_2Al$, [1-10]Al//[11- 20]$Ag_2Al$. The microstructure of the melt-spun samples contains Widmanstatten structure resulting from solid-state transformation and nano scale two-phase structure resulting from solid-state phase separation. The microstructure of injection-cast samples contains eutectic structure and solid state phase-separated structure. On the other hand, conventional-cast samples exhibit a microstructure consisted of plate-type eutectic structure.
