Modification of polylactic acid (PLA) and 10% maleic anhydride (MAH) with 15% dicumyl peroxide (DCP) based on MAH weight was conducted in the kneader at $160^{\circ}C$ and 30~70 rpm, for 15 min. The resulting MAH-modified PLA (PLA-MA) was then evaluated as a compatibilizer for PLA-wood flour (WF) composites. The FTIR and $^1H$-NMR analysis gave evidence of PLA-MA formation. After kneading and reacting with MAH and DCP, the number (Mn) and the weight average (Mw) molecular weights of PLA decreased as compared to the original PLA. The presence of WF in the composites decreased the tensile strength and several other physical properties. The higher the WF loading resulted in the greater the reduction of tensile strength. An addition of 10% PLA-MA as a compatibilizer to the composites improved the tensile strength and several other physical properties, increased the flow temperature, and decreased the melt viscosity. The improved composite revealed 1.42 times increased in tensile strength but not over PLA alone, and absorbed considerably less water compared to those of the composites free-compatibilizer.
The glass structure and antibacterial properties of $(65-x)ZnO-xB_2O_3-35P_2O_5$ glasses were investigated. Zinc borophosphate glasses were prepared using a conventional melt-quenching technique at $1000^{\circ}C$. Glass transition temperature and CTE were studied and the structure of zinc borophosphate glasses was evaluated by FTIR. The $Zn^{2+}$ state increase with increasing ZnO content was investigated by XPS and a single sharp Zn $2P_{3/2}$ peak was confirmed, showing that Zn $2P_{3/2}$ exists as $Zn^{2+}$. In order to to evaluate the antimicrobial activity, Escherichia coli (E. coli) was used following the Japanese Industrial Standard JIS Z 2801; the E. coli death rate was found to increase with increasing $Zn^{2+}$ content of glasses.

In the present paper, KLN crystals have been grown along <001>, <100> and <110> directions by the top seeded solution growth (TSSG) method from Li-richer melts with different compositions. The morphologies of KLN crystals grown along different directions have been studied, and the well-developed facets have been unambiguously indexed using X-ray goniometer and stereographic projection analysis. The growth mechanism and defects such as cracks and inclusions were discussed on the basis of observations of facets on the crystal-melt interfaces. The crystal compositions were determined by chemical analysis method. The structure and lattice constants of KLN crystals were determined and calculated on the basis of XRD data by using TREOR90 and PIRUM programs. The Curie temperature and optical absorption were determined by dielectric constant peak and spectrum measurements, respectively. The blue SHG characteristics of a KLN sample were also investigated using a pulsed dye laser. PACS: 42.70.M;81.10;81.10A;42.65.K.
In this study, the compressibility of resin was considered in filling analysis to account for the possible packing type flow. A numerical simulation program employing a hybrid finite element/finite difference scheme was developed to solve Hele-Shaw flow of the compressible viscous fluid at non-isothermal conditions. To advance the melt front, a control volume approach was adopted. Thin complex 3-D shapes of cavities, runners, and sprues were discretized by employing triangular, cylindrical and/or rectangular strip elements. Mass conservation was applied to each control volume to solve for the pressure distribution. Directly applying a constant mass flow rate at the inlet removes calculation of the apparent pressure boundary conditions, resulting in better simulation condition. The Cross model was used to model viscosity and the Tait equation was employed to represent density as a function of temperature and pressure. The validity of the developed program was verified through comparisons with available data in the literature and the effect of compressibility on the pressure distribution was discussed. To reduce computation time, 1-D and 2-D elements were used instead of applying triangular elements and the numerical results were compared to each other.

In order to develop a new line injection system for spin draw yarn (FD SDY) fibers, the effect of various parameters in extrusion and melt line conditions on the dispersion and distribution of $TiO_2$ particles within FD PET fibers was investigated. As a result, the dispersibility of $TiO_2$ particles in a PET matrix is found to depend on the particle size and its surface characteristics. Surface modification of $TiO_2$ by dimethyl polysiloxane resulted in the improved dispersibility and affinity of $TiO_2$ particles in the PET matrix. Especially, residence time, mixing temperature, and mixing shear rate in the new line injection system under the SDY spinning process were very important parameters to minimize the agglomeration of $TiO_2$ particles. The FD SDY prepared by the new line injection system was superior to those using the polymerization process and the conventional masterbatch chip dosing process in the color-L and color-b values of the fibers.
A truck refrigeration system using phase change material (PCM) is expected to have a lower noise level, reduced energy cost, and much lower local greenhouse gas emission. Recently, a forced convection type PCM refrigeration module has been developed. As the operation time increases, the PCM around the air inlet melts, because of a large temperature difference between the PCM and air. Therefore, the latent heat transfer area decreases and the heat transfer rate of the module decreases even though there is a lot of PCM which does not melt around the air outlet. A computational fluid dynamic modeling of the PCM refrigeration module was developed and validated by the experiment. Using the CFD, the design parameters, such as the mass flow rate of the air and roughness of the slab, were investigated to improve the heat transfer inhomogeneity. As a result, the adoption of partial roughness on the slabs improved the heat transfer inhomogeneity and reduced a fan power.

As a process of Direct Containment Heating (DCH) issue resolution for Korean Standard Nuclear Power Plants (KSNPs), a containment load/strength assessment with two different approaches, the probabilistic and the deterministic, was performed with all plant-specific and phenomena-specific data. In case of the probabilistic approach, the framework developed to support the Zion DCH study, Two-Cell Equilibrium (TCE) coupled with Latin Hypercubic Sampling (LHS), provided a very efficient tool to resolve DCH issue. In case of the deterministic approach, the evaluation methodology using the sophisticated mechanistic computer code, CONTAIN 2.0 was developed, based on findings from DCH-related experiments or analyses. For three bounding scenarios designated as Scenarios V, Va, and VI, the calculation results of TCE/LHS and CONTAIN 2.0 with the conservatism or typical estimation for uncertain parameters, showed that the containment failure resulted from DCH loads was not likely to occur. To verify that these two approaches might be conservative , the containment loads resulting from typical high-pressure accident scenarios (SBO and SBLOCA) for KSNPs were also predicted. The CONTAIN 2.0 calculations with boundary and initial conditions from the MAAP4 predictions, including the sensitivity calculations for DCH phenomenological parameters, have confirmed that the predicted containment pressure and temperature were much below those from these two approaches, and, therefore, DCH issue for KSNPS might be not a problem.

Scale defects generated on the strip surface in a tandem finishing mill line are collected from the strip trapped among the production mills by freezing the growing scale on the strip by the melt glass coating and shutting down the line simultaneously. The samples observed of its cross sectional figure showed the process of scale defect formation where the defects are formed at the base metal surface by thicker oxidized scale during each rolling passes. The properties of the oxidized layer growth both at rolling and inter-rolling are detected down sized rolling test simulating carefully the rolling condition of the production line. The thickness of the oxidized layer at each rolling pass are simulated numerically. The critical scale thickness to avoid the defect formation is determined through the expression of mutual relation between oxidized layer thickness and the lanks of the strip called quality for the scale defects. The scale growth of scale less than the critical thickness and also to keep the bulk temperature tuning the water flow rate and cooling time appropriately. Two units of Inerstand Cooler are designed and settled among the first three stands in the production line. Two units of scale defect is counted from the recoiled strip and the results showed distinct decrease of the defects comparing to the conventionaly rolled products.
The purpose of this study was to process bio-active glass ceramic composite, reinforced with sapphire fibers, by hot press. Also to study the interface of the matrix and the sapphire fiber, and the mechanical properties. Glass raw materials melted in Pt crucible at 1300$^{\circ}C$ during 3.5 hours. The melt was crushed in ball mill and then crushed material, ground and sieved to $<40{\beta}{\mu}m$. Sapphire fibers cut (30mm) and aligned. Powder and fibers hot pressed. The micrographs show good bonding between the matrix and the fiber and no porosity in the glass matrix. This means ideal fracture phenomena. Glass is fractured before the fiber. This is indication of good fracture strength. EDXS showing aluminum rich phase and crystalline phase. Bright field image of the matrix showing crystalline phase. Also diffraction pattern of TEM showing the crystalline phase and more than one phase. Strength of the samples was determined by 3 point bend testing. Strength of the 10vol% sample was approximately 69MPa, while strength of the control sample is 35MPa. Conclusions through this study as follow: 1. Micrographs show no porosity in the glass matrix and the interface. 2. The interface between the fiber and the glass matrix show no gaps. 3. Fracture of the glass indicates characteristic fiber-matrix separation. 4. Presence of crystalline phase at high processing temperature. 5. Sapphire is compatible with bioactive glass.
Poly(${\epsilon}$-caprolactone) (PCL) diol, with good biodegradation and biocompatibility, is one of the widely used soft segments (SSs) in composing bio-polyester-urethanes (Bio-PUs), which show great potential in both biomedical and tissue engineering applications. Properties of Bio-PUs are tunable by combining SS monomers with different molecular weights, structures, modifications, and ratio of components. Although numbers of research have reported many Bio-PUs properties, few studies have been done at the molecular scale. In this study, we use molecular dynamic (MD) simulation to construct atomistic models for two commonly used PCL diol SSs with different molecular weights 1247.58 Da and 1932.42 Da. We compare the simulation results by using two widely used classical force fields for organic molecules: Consistent Valence Force Field (CVFF) and CHARMM General Force Field (CGenFF), and discuss the validity and accuracy. Melt density, volume, polymer conformations, transition temperature, and mechanical properties of PCL diols are calculated and compared with experiments. Our results show that both force fields provide accurate predictions on the properties of PCL diol system at the molecular scale and could help the design of future Bio-PUs.
