  • To find new species of Basidiomycetes in Korea, 15 species were collected in the medicinal plants garden of Sook Myung Women’s University during the period from May to November, 1983. Of them, 11 species were identified and classified into 10 genera and seven families. Among these species, Macrocystidia cucumis(Pers. ex Fr.) Heim and Melanoleuca verrucipes (Fr.) Singer were found to be unrecorded species in Korea. Also their two genera are newly found ones in Korea. They were named 'Bahm Saek Min $B\breve{u}s\breve{u}t$' and 'Hin Bol Lock $B\breve{u}s\breve{u}t$' respectively and their characteristics were here reported.

  • The five species of genus Cobitis from Korea were investigated by electron microscopes to clarify the adhesive membranes on zona radiata. In the late vitellogenic stage the adhesive membranes could be classified into two form as follows: 1) granular form of Cobitis lutheri, C. striata, C. sinensis, and C. sinensis-longicorpus, 2) villous form of C. melanoleuca. Although C. lutheri, C. striata, C. sinensis, and C. sinensis-longicorpus possessed the same granular form, it was evident that fine structure of the zona radiata varied according to species. The adhesive membranes and fine structures of zona radiata in Cobitis showed a species specificity closely related to their habitats and spawning properties.

  • Two giant pandas, which come from China have been roared in Yong-in Farmland zoo since 1994. One of them, which is female and 2 years old showed anorexia, mucous diarrhea and severe abdominal pain. It revealed neutrophilia and hypokalemia which suggested inflammation and loss of electrolytes by diarrhea. The mucous material contained intestinal mucoid epithelim which was infected Gram negative bacilli and infiltrated with neutrophils. The antibacterial therapy with nafcillin and ampicillin was not successful. Yersinia entrocolitica was implicated as a causative organism in the occurrence of bacterial enteritis. This organism had resistance to ampicillin, chlorampenicol, cefalothin, tetracycline, trimetoprim-sul-famethoxazole, erythromycin, gentamicin, kanamycin, carbanicillin and danofloxacin. It responded to the simultaneous administration of cefopherazone, flunixin-meglumine, physiological saline, Lactate Rainger's solution, sodium bicarbonate, KCL and vitamins and recovered after a period of 30days.

  • Phylogenetic relationships between 8 species Korean loaches (Cobitidae) were investigated by comparing mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequences. However our results are in accordance with finding observed using other morphological studies, new interesting interspecific variation in Korean loaches were found. Orthrias and Lefua appeared to be paraphyletic in Cobitidae observed. Their sequence divergence value was agreed with interfamilic sequence divergences between Cobitidae and Cyprinidae ranged from 0.184 to 0.272. Otherwise, the present results support that two species of Iksookimia and Cobitis melanoleuca were early diverged respectively. And another remarkable result was sequence divergence between Misgurnus anguillicaudatus from China and M. anguillicaudatus from Yongdok, Korea. That was 0.099, which was interspecific value. Also the phylogenetic location of some Iksookimia species was suggested as the cobitid intergeneric hybrid origin.

  • Daecheongdo and Socheongdo Islands are located in the West Sea of Korea, 210 km away from land, and are military border areas very close to North Korea, making them difficult to access. Although the ecosystem of the islands is relatively well preserved due to the lack of accessibility, research on fungi of the regions is insufficient. Therefore, we aimed to investigate indigenous fungi in these geographically and geopolitically constrained regions. A survey of the indigenous fungal diversity of the islands was conducted in 2018. All specimens were identified at the species level based on morphological and molecular analyses. Among them, six macrofungi-namely, Agaricus menieri, Crepidotus praecipuus, Dichomitus squalens, Hortiboletus amygdalinus, Melanoleuca friesii, and Trametes lactinea-were not previously reported in Korea. Considering that the proportion of unrecorded species is high in the survey area and period as well as the number of samples collected, similar research on adjacent islands may be necessary.

  • We investigated the fibrinolytic and ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ inhibitory activity of 55 wild mushroom methanol extracts. Among them, 14 mushrooms showed fibrinolytic activity. In particular, Amanita virgineoides showed the greatest enzyme activity (3.9 plasmin units/ml) by a fibrin plate assay. The fibrinolytic activities of Suillus pictus and Polypolellus varius were 3.8 plasmin units, and the activity of Gomphus fujisanensis was 2.8 plasmin units. Leccinum extremiorientale and Xerocomus nigromaculatus had the same activity with 2.3 plasmin units. In a ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ inhibitory activity test, Lactarius sp. showed the greatest inhibitory activity at 97.3%. The ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ inhibitory activities of Clitocybe odora, Xerocomus nigromaculatus, Melanoleuca melaleuca, Suillus pictus, and Gyroporus castaneus were 84.3%, 77.9%, 74.6%, 68.7%, and 65.4%, respectively. According to the results, because Suillus pictus and Xerocomus nigromaculatus have strong fibrinolytic and ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ inhibitory activities, the two mushrooms will be used as materials for the development of new biofunctional food.
