  • Effect of various fractions from the roots of Patrinia scabiosaefolia (Valerianaceae) and whole plants of Melandryum firmum (Caryophyllaceae) on enzyme activities in mice was investigated. The butanol fractions from both plants caused a significant elevation of serum transaminase activities when administered intraperitoneally, but did not, orally. Prolonged exposure by oral administration of both plants elevated hepatic cytochrome p-450 content, indicating the induction of drug metabolizing enzymes in liver.

  • The MeOH ext., $CH_2Cl_2$ Frac., EtOAc Frac., n-BuOH Frac., and $H_2O$ Frac. of 23 Korean medicinal herbs were prepared and were tested the inhibitory effects on Cytochrome P450 (Cyp) 1A1/2, 2B1/2, 2E1. Among the tested samples, the extracts of Selaginella tamariscina, Euonymus alatus, Salvia miltiorhiza, Angelica acutiloba, Rheum palmatum, Paeonia moutan, Scutellaria barbata, Tribulus terrestris, Hedyotis diffusa, Curcuma zedoaria, Rehmania glutinosa, Trogopterus xanthipes, Melandryum firmum, Achyranthes bidentata, Leonurus sibricus, Panax ginseng, Paeonia lactiflora, Poncirus trifoliata, Cnidium officinale, Cyperus rotundus, Corydalis ternata showed significant inhibitory effects on Cyp 1A1/2, 2B1/2, 2E1. The $IC_{50}$ values of those extracts were found to be below $50\;{\mu}g/ml$.

  • Floristic composition of Kyongpo Provincial Park area were investigated from June, 1997 to June, 1998. Vascular plants were composed of 87 families, 240 genera, 281 species, 51 varieties, and 7 formae, totaling 339 taxa. Among them, three taxa such as Vicia venosissima, Paulownia coreana, Aster ciliosa were Korean endemic species. Pteridophyta calculation(Pte-Q) was investigated, 0.61. A naturalized plants were 12 species, corresponding to 5.5% of totaling 218 species in South Korea by Lee and Chon(1995). The dominant species could be represented by Pinus thunbergii and P. densiflora. And its stratification structure were composed as follows : Pinus thunbergii and P. densiflora in tree and subtree layer, Pinus thunbergii, P. densiflora. and Prunus sargentii in shrub layer, and Spodiopogon sibiricus, Festuca ovina, Melandryum firmum, Artemisia princeps, Rumex acetosella, Commelina communis and Plantago depressa in herb layer, respectively. But stratification structure of dominant species appeared very unstable in subtree and shrub layer.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of seed germination pattern by the prechilling and alternating temperature treatments to 16 species of native plant. The seed length, width and thickness ranged from 1.1 to 8.9 mm, from 0.7 to 7.5 mm and from 0.4 to 1.7 mm, respectively. In addition, the 1,000 grain weight of native plants ranged from 0.1 to 8.8g. Germination rate of Melandryum firmum R. and Saussurea pulchella F. with light condition, Capsella bursa-pastoris L. and Leonurus sibiricus L. with dark conditionin of non-treatment were the highest 69, 81,16 and 36%, respectively. Germination rate of Aster scaber T., Cirsium setidens N., Ligularia fischeri T., Plantago asiatica L., and Saussurea sp. of 5$^{\circ}C$ prechilling for 30 days were the highest 84, 29, 29, 57, 78 and 95% with light condition respectively, 30% but Cirsium nipponicum M. only with dark condition. Germination rate of Aralia elata S., Aster koraiensis N. and Synurus deltoides N. of alternating temperature with 8 hours at 3$0^{\circ}C$ and 16 hours at 15$^{\circ}C$ were the highest 2 and 57% with light condition and 52% with dark condition.
