  • This study was conducted to elucidate the distribution of Aujeszky's disease viral nucleic acids and antigens in the central nervous system (CNS) of piglets. The first Korean isolate of Aujeszky's disease virus(ADV) that isolated from naturally infected piglets in Yang San, was inoculated into 32 day old piglets with $10^{5.9}TCID_{50}/ml$ through intranasal or intramuscular route. These piglets were sacrificed at every 24hrs for 8 days. The immunohistochemistry (IHC) was conducted to detect the viral antigens in paraffin-embedded tissue sections using avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) method. The viral nucleic acids were detected by in situ hybridization (ISH) using ADV specific DNA probe labeled with digoxigenin. The ADV antigens were detected in reticuloendothelial cells of spleen, lymph nodes and tonsil, alveolar walls, leptomeningeal vascular walls, inflammatory foci of each organ, and nerve cells. The viral nucleic acids were detected in the spinal trigeminal nucleus and its tracts of the pons and medulla oblongata by the ISH technique. The pathways of AD viruses in CNS were determined by IHC and ISH. In the intranasally inoculated group, the viruses in nasal mucosa moved to medulla oblongata and pons through the trigeminal nerve. In case of intramuscullarly inoculated group, viruses moved to brain via lymphoid organs or spinal nerves from sciatic nerves.

  • The present experiment was designed to examine catecholamines, serotonine, amino acids, malondialdehyde and free radical scavenging activity, by administering Yukmijihwangtang extract of a variety of concentraction to senile brain. The results were summarized as followings: 1. Yukmijihwangtang significantly increased noradrenaline in the striatum, hypothalamus, midbrain and pons-medulla oblongota of the brain tissue of senile rats, and even though Yukmijihwangtang increased noradrenaline also in other brain tissue, there was no significance. 2. Yukmijihwangtang significantly increased dopamine in the striatum, hypothalamus and midbrain of the brain tissue of senile rats, and even though Yukmijihwangtang increased dopamine also in other brain tissue, there was no significance. 3. Yukmijihwangtang significantly increased serotonine in the pons- medulla oblongata and cerebellum of the brain tissue of senile rats, and even though Yukmijihwangtang increased serotonine also in the other brain tissue except hypothalamus and midbrain, there was no significance. 4. Yukmijihwangtang significantly increased amino acid in the brain tissue of senile rats. 5. Yukmijihwangtang significantly decresed malondialdehyde and free radical in the brain tissue of senile rats. According to the above results, Yukmijihwangtang is assumed to improve brain function by reacting on biochemical of the senile brain, and that Yukmijihwangtang can be used to treat regressive brain disease carrying symptoms of psychoactive disorders.

  • The concept of Chiari malformations emerged toward the end of $19^{th}$ century from Chiari's initial descriptions of "alterations in the cerebellum resulting from cerebral hydrocephalus." In 1891, Hans Chiari(1851-1916) suggested cerebellar ectopia in which he classified Type I as "elongation of the tonsils and medial parts of the inferior lobes of the cerebellum into cone-shaped projections, which accompany the medulla oblongata into the spinal canal. The incidence of Chiari malformation has been found to be between 0.56% and 0.77% on MR imaging studies, as well as 0.62% in brain dissection studies. the definition of the adult Chiari malformation has varied with the evolution of neurodiagnositic capabilities and knowledge of physiopathology. This disorder can be associated with significant symptomatology, risk of secondary injury due to trauma, and the risk of progression and damage of the spinal cord due to associated Syringomyelia. Syringomyelia is found in 50 to 70% of Chiari I malformation. It is the clinical judgment of the physicians evaluating this disorder that is of the importance to avoid the therapeutic extremes of pursuing unnecessary surgery or withholding necessary treatment from patients.

  • Cavernous angiomas of the medulla oblongata are rare vascular malformations. We report a case of cavernous angioma with medullary hemorrhage showing symptoms of diplopia and weakness of right extremities. We treated a patient with herb medicine, acupuncture and moxibustion. This study suggests that oriental medicine therapy has a significant effect on the symptoms of medullary hemorrhage.

  • Isolated hypoglossal nerve paresis due to mechanical compression from a vascular lesion is very rare. We present a case of a 32-year-old man who presented with spontaneous abrupt-onset dysarthria, swallowing difficulty and left-sided tongue atrophy. Brain computed tomographic angiography and magnetic resonance imaging of the brainstem demonstrated an abnormal course of the left vertebral artery compressing the medulla oblongata at the exit zone of the hypoglossal rootlets that was relieved by microvascular decompression of the offending intracranial vertebral artery. This case supports the hypothesis that hypoglossal nerve palsy can be due to nerve stretching and compression by a pulsating normal vertebral artery. Microvascular decompression of the intracranial nerve and careful evaluation of the imaging studies can resolve unexpected isolated hypoglossal nerve palsy.

  • The causes of sudden death after medullary infarction involve arrhythmia, central respiratory failure, and dysautonomia. Sudden cardiac arrest in a medullary infarction is uncommon. Most of these cases experienced sudden cardiopulmonary arrest within 2 weeks from stroke onset as the extent of lesion increased. Here, we report two cases of medullary infarction presenting as sudden cardiac arrest. These cases indicate that medullary infarction could be one of the causes of sudden cardiac arrest.

  • Oxygen supply is one of the most basic things in human body. Breathing is controlled by the lungs' stationary function and the respiratory center which is in the mesulla oblongata. Nothing but, the external breathing that air movement between the lungs and atmosphere and the internal breathing that cellular air movement between the hemoglobin and a single cell. The adult's number of times of the respirations is about 15∼20 per 1 minute, but it depends ages, exercise, temperature, disease, etc. The important thing in detecting the respiration is that doing it in object person's resting time. Detecting the respiration have to be done without attracting any attention of object person. In present using method is detecting the pulse with catching an object person's wrist and observing the object person's movement. In this paper, we propose the mobile respiration detection diagnostic system using ultrasound sensing method that does not be influenced by the inertia error and the pressure error.

  • Acaiberry (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) is widely diffused in amazon and is known that has high antioxidant capacity and potential anti-inflammatory activities. The aim of this study was to evaluate analgesic effects of acaiberry in formalin-induced orofacial pain through p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases (p38 MAPK) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate 4 (NOX4) pathway. Rats were divided into 5 groups (n=6); formalin (5%, $50{\mu}L$), formalin after saline (vehicle) or acaiberry (16, 80, 160 mg/kg, intraperitoneally). The nociceptive response was investigated all of groups, p38 MAPK or NOX4 were analysed at dose of 80 mg/kg of acaiberry in rat's medulla oblongata and adrenal gland. Results indicated that acai berry produced analgesic effect in a dose-dependent manner and significantly reduced formalin-induced nociceptive response at 15~40 min. Acaiberry (80 mg/kg) decreased the increased p38 MAPK activation and NOX4 expression in medulla oblongata and adrenal gland. Based on these results, acaiberry is believed to be useful for modulation of orofacial pain and its treatments because of its anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects.
