IEEE 802.11s-based infrastructure Wireless Mesh Networks (iWMNs) are envisaged as a promising solution to provide ubiquitous wireless Internet access. The limited network capacity is a problem mainly caused by the medium contention between mesh users and the mesh access points (MAPs), which gets worst when the mesh clients employ the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). To mitigate this problem, we use wireless network coding (WNC) in the MAPs. The aim of this proposal is to take advantage of the network topology around the MAPs, to alleviate the contention and maximize the use of the network capacity. We evaluate WNC when is used in MAPs. We model the formation of coding opportunities and, using computer simulations, we evaluate the formation of such coding opportunities. The results show that as the users density grows, the coding opportunities increase up to 70%; however, at the same time, the coding delay increments significantly. In order to reduce such delay, we propose to adaptively adjust the time that a packet can wait to catch a coding opportunity in an MAP. We assess the performance of moving-average estimation methods to forecast this adaptive sojourn time. We show that using moving-average estimation methods can significantly decrease the coding delay since they consider the traffic density conditions.

In these days, wireless data services are becoming ubiquitous in our daily life because they offers several fundamental benefits including user mobility, rapid installation, flexibility, and scalability. Moreover, the requests for various multimedia services and the Quality of Service (QoS) support have been one of key issues in wireless data communications. Therefore the research relative to Medium Access Control (MAC) has been progressing rapidly. Especially a number of QoS-aware MAC schemes have been introduced to extend the legacy IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol which has not guaranteed any service differentiation. However, none of those schemes fulfill both QoS features and channel efficiency although these support the service differentiation based on priority. Therefore this paper studies a novel MAC scheme, referred to as Enhanced Distributed Coordination Function with Network Adaptation (EDCF-NA), for enhancements of both QoS and medium efficiency. It uses a smart factor denoted by ACK rate and Network Load Threshold (TH). In this paper, we study how the value of TH has effect on MAC performance and how the use of optimal TH pair improves the overall MAC performance in terms of the QoS, channel utilization, collision rate, and fairness. In addition, we evaluate and compare both the performance of EDCF-NA depending on several pairs of TH and the achievement of various MAC protocols through simulations by using Network Simulator-2 (NS-2).

Due to the recent advances in computing, communication and micro-electromechanical technology, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) applications have been extended from military to many commercial areas such as object tracking, wire detection, and vehicular sensor networks. In some applications bursty data from many sensor nodes may be generated and the generated data from the monitoring area may be sent in a limited time to the final destination, sink node. In this paper, we present a BTF-MAC protocol adequate for WSNs applications in which bursty data packets are required to be transmitted in a limited time. The BTF-MAC is a synchronous duty-cycle MAC protocol and uses a slot-reserved and operational period extension mechanism adapted to the traffics. Our numerical analysis and simulation results show that BTF-MAC outperforms other related protocols such as DW-MAC and SR-MAC in terms of energy consumption and transmission delay.

In this paper, we analyze the performance of MAC (Media Access Control) layer in DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communication). It will be widely applied for ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) services; for example ETC (Electric Toll Control), BIS (Bus Information System) etc., needed to small packet size. But If ITS service is evolving to advance ITS, ADIS (Advanced Driver Information Systems) and AVHS (Advanced Vehicle Highway System) etc, be needed larger packet size. In the future, it may offer more various services such as traffic information, collection, and multimedia information. There are two kind of physical media, IR(Infrared) and RF(Radio frequency). And each system has their own protocol that is adaptive in special characteristics of physical medium for using efficiently limited radio resources. In this paper, we analyze the special characteristics of each system. And we study practical use of some related services expected to be used in the near future, by analyzing the transmission efficiency in each DSRC system.

Opportunistic interference alignment (OIA) has been proposed for multi-cell random access networks (RAN), which minimizes the generating interference to neighboring RANs and yields better performance compared with the conventional techniques. The OIA for RANs considers both physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layers. In this paper, we introduce a protocol of which each user maximizes the transmit signal regardless of the generating interference to neighboring RANs, contrary to the OIA technique. In addition, we compare the performance of the signal-maximization technique with the OIA technique.

The concept of Internet of Things (IoT) has shed new light on WSN technologies. MAC protocol issues improving the network performance are important in WSNs because of the increase in demand for various applications to secure spectrum resources. Cognitive radio (CR) technology is regarded as a solution to the problems in this future wireless network. In recent years, energy efficiency has become an issue in CR networks. However, few relevant studies have been conducted. In this paper, an energy-efficient non-overlapping channel MAC (ENC-MAC) for CR-enabled sensor networks (CRSNs) is proposed. Applying the dedicated control channel approach, ENC-MAC allows the SUs to utilize channels in a non-overlapping manner, and thus spectrum efficiency is improved. Moreover, the cooperative spectrum sensing that allows an SU to use only two minislots in the sensing phase is addressed to en-hance energy efficiency. In addition, an analytical model for evaluating the performance, such as saturation throughput, average packet delay, and network lifetime, is developed. It is shown in our results that ENC-MAC remarkably outperforms existing MAC protocols.

The WiMedia alliance has specified a distributed medium access control (WiMedia MAC) protocol based on ultra wideband (UWB) for high data rate WPANs (HR-WPANs). The merits of WiMedia MAC such as distributed nature and high data rate make it a favorite candidate in HR-WPAN. Although QoS parameters such as the range of service rates are provided to a traffic stream, the WiMedia MAC is not able to use the QoS parameters and to determine or adjust a service rate using the QoS parameters for the traffic stream. In this paper, we propose a fair and adaptive resource allocation method that allocates time slots to isochronous streams according to QoS parameters and the current traffic load condition in a fully distributed manner. Although the traffic load condition changes, each device independently recognizes the changes and calculates fair and maximum allowable service rates for traffic streams. From the numerical and simulation results, it is proved that the proposed method achieves high capacity of traffic streams and fair QoS provisioning under various traffic load condition.

In this paper, we propose a new MAC protocol, namely DM-MMAC (Doze Mode Multi-Channel MAC) for ad hoe wireless networks which can utilize multiple channels effectively, thereby enhancing the network throughput considerably. Basically, the IEEE 802.11 specification allows for the use of multiple channels available at the physical layer, but its MAC protocol is designed only for a single channel with the fatal drawback, so called multi-channel hidden terminal problem in multi-channel environments. In this vein, several multi-channel MAC protocols have been proposed, but most of them demonstrate the performance problem that its throughput drastically decreases as the number of mobile hosts residing in a given network increases with small number of available channels. In this work, we tried to improve the performance of multi-channel MAC protocols in terms of network throughput as well as power saving effects by simplifying the channel assignment and channel capturing procedures and reducing the possibility of collisions between mobile hosts.

Design of efficient Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols with both high throughput performances is a major focus in distributed contention based MAC protocol research. In this paper, we propose an efficient contention based MAC protocol for wireless Local Area Networks, namely, the Developed Collision Resolution (DCR) algorithm. This algorithm is developed based on the following innovative ideas: to speed up the collision resolution, we actively redistribute the backoff timers for all active nodes; to reduce the average number of idle slots, we use smaller contention window sizes for nodes with successful packet transmissions and reduce the backoff timers exponentially fast when a fixed number of consecutive idle slots are detected. We show that the proposed DCR algorithm provides high throughput performance and low latency in wireless LANs.

In this paper a novel medium access control mechanism is investigated as a means to support real-time services. The primary goal is to provide constant-bit-rate voice call services to pairs of autonomous mobile nodes operating in ad hoc networks. Here, a time-slot reservation based MAC is considered to provide real-time voice calls and a new MAC called the time-slot reservation coordination function(TRCF) is presented. In addition to this isochronous type MAC protocol development, the proposed protocol is modeled using a Markov chain in order to predict its behavior. The performance of TRCF is analytically derived and the performance measures such as average wait time taken for a call connection and throughput are obtained.
