SciBabel: a system for crowd-sourced validation of automatic translations of scientific texts

  • Scientific research is mostly published in English, regardless of the researcher's nationality. However, this growing practice impairs or hinders the comprehension of professionals who depend on the results of these studies to provide adequate care for their patients. We suggest that machine translation (MT) can be used as a way of providing useful translation for biomedical articles, even though the translation itself may not be fluent. To tackle possible mistranslation that can harm a patient, we resort to crowd-sourced validation of translations. We developed a prototype of MT validation and edition, where users can vote for that translation as valid, or suggest modifications (i.e., post-editing the MT). A glossary match system is also included, aiming at terminology consistency.

Accelerating next generation sequencing data analysis: an evaluation of optimized best practices for Genome Analysis Toolkit algorithms

  • Advancements in next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies have significantly increased the translational use of genomics data in the medical field as well as the demand for computational infrastructure capable processing that data. To enhance the current understanding of software and hardware used to compute large scale human genomic datasets (NGS), the performance and accuracy of optimized versions of GATK algorithms, including Parabricks and Sentieon, were compared to the results of the original application (GATK V4.1.0, Intel x86 CPUs). Parabricks was able to process a 50× whole-genome sequencing library in under 3 h and Sentieon finished in under 8 h, whereas GATK v4.1.0 needed nearly 24 h. These results were achieved while maintaining greater than 99% accuracy and precision compared to stock GATK. Sentieon's somatic pipeline achieved similar results greater than 99%. Additionally, the IBM POWER9 CPU performed well on bioinformatic workloads when tested with 10 different tools for alignment/mapping.

  • purpose: The study was done to analyze the concept of moral distress in nurses. Method: The Hybrid Model was used in this study. For the theoretical phase, nursing and other literature were reviewed to analyze attributes and develop a working definition of the concept, moral distress in nurses. For the fieldwork phase, In-depth interviews were conducted with six nurses. Results: Four higher level concepts of moral distress in nurses were found; situational, cognitive, behavioral, and emotional, and 8 subscales, negative medical behavior, negative nursing behavior, excessive economic load, irrational organization administration, internal restraints, external restraints, negative behavioral responses, and negative emotional responses. Conclusion: it is necessary to develop programs of arbitration that will lessen the moral distress in nurses working in clinical practice.

Involvement of lymphoid inducer cells in the development of secondary and tertiary lymphoid structure

  • During development lymphoid tissue inducer (LTi) cells are the first hematopoietic cells to enter the secondary lymphoid anlagen and induce lymphoid tissue neogenesis. LTi cells induce lymphoid tissue neogensis by expressing a wide range of proteins that are associated with lymphoid organogenesis. Among these proteins, membrane-bound lymphotoxin (LT) $\alpha1\beta2$ has been identified as a critical component to this process. LT$\alpha1\beta2$ interacts with the LT$\beta$-receptor on stromal cells and this interaction induces up-regulation of adhesion molecules and production of chemokines that are necessary for the attraction, retention and organization of other cell types. Constitutive expression of LT$\alpha1\beta2$ in adult LTi cells can result in the formation of a lymphoid-like structure called tertiary lymphoid tissue. In this review, we summarize the function of fetal and adult LTi cells and their involvement in secondary and tertiary lymphoid tissue development in murine models.

  • The emergence of viral diseases transmitted is nowadays a central problem in the world. Problem, which is becoming very critical in developing countries, where the health systems are not yet enough developed to face the bursting of such diseases. Emerging viral diseases constitute one of the major threats to human being that are arising in the modern world. Besides bio-chemical and medical researches, new orientations are developed to understand the environmental dimensions of such emergence. Questions concerning the inter-plays between the environmental and disease dynamics are building up new investigations, both in remote sensing and GIS, for the elaboration of levels of organization of space and environment in relation to incidences, to gain understandings in these issues. Environmental attributes attached to land cover types: area, spatial heterogeneity and physical state, are derived from remote sensing and applied to uncover related dimensions of the Dengue disease.

만성 페색전증의 외과적 요법수술 및 수술 전후 문제 (Surgical Management of Chronic Pulmonary Embolism - Surgical treatment and perioperative problems -)

  • in general rapid and complete resolution of pulmonary emboli, even massive, is the natural history. However, rarely, the emboli do not resolve but rather became fibrotic organization and densely adherent to the arterial wall, therefore, may lead to significant clinical disability. In patients with chronic pulmonary embolism, medical management usually has little effect and only surgical treatment can offer improvement. The case was 30-year-old man who had admission to the Hanyang University Hospital due to fall-down from 11th floor 407 days before operation and then transferred to our department for surgical management under the diagnosis of chronic pulmonary embolism, Pulmonary angiogram demonstrated multifocal thromboembolism with infarction and lung scans showed no improvement in spite of anticoagulant and thrombolytic therapy. At median sternotomy for pulmonary artery thromboembolectomy, the well organized and multiple septic emboli could be removed by gallstone forceps. But reoperation of left upper lobectomy was performed because of the repeated hemoptysis and suspicious pulmonary arterio-bronchial fistula 19 days postoperatively. Despite of ventilatory support and drug treatment, the patient died due to right heart failure associated with cor pulmonale 27 days after first operation. Discussion of the operative and perioperative problems are offered.

  • Signal transduction through G protein-coupled receptors comprises three functional components, a receptor, a G protcin and a effector protein. Work over the last sevcral ycars has led to the characterization or virtually all of the components or these systems. what has come out or those studies is that these mechanisms of signal transduction are pervasive in nature being found in mammalian and avian species, as well as lower organisms such as yeast and slime mold. It is known that G protein-coupled receptors mediate the action of such diverse molecules such as small hormones and neurotransmitters, small peptide molecules as well as glycoprotein hormones and various sensory perceptions such as light, olfaction and most likely taste.

임상병리검사 처방전달 시스템 (Order Communication System for Clinical Laboratory Tests)

  • Clinical laboratory order communication system was developed to run fast and effective laboratory tests at the Chungbuk National University Hospital. The present system incorporated with the main Hospital Management Information System accepts :aboratory orders, classifies them based on the predefined logical system, and outputs various practical informations for the user. These assist sample taking, sample management, and work plan organization. A special care was taken to the sample management by introducing the bar code system. The system was written in the INFOS hierarchical database and COBOL, and is currently in the practical use for both in - and out-ward patients. The present system enabled fast and effective data communication as well as reducing the time and man power indispensable when the manual slips are used for order communication.

The Role of Cytoskeletal Elements in Shaping Bacterial Cells

  • Beginning from the recognition of FtsZ as a bacterial tubulin homolog in the early 1990s, many bacterial cytoskeletal elements have been identified, including homologs to the major eukaryotic cytoskeletal elements (tubulin, actin, and intermediate filament) and the elements unique in prokaryotes (ParA/MinD family and bactofilins). The discovery and functional characterization of the bacterial cytoskeleton have revolutionized our understanding of bacterial cells, revealing their elaborate and dynamic subcellular organization. As in eukaryotic systems, the bacterial cytoskeleton participates in cell division, cell morphogenesis, DNA segregation, and other important cellular processes. However, in accordance with the vast difference between bacterial and eukaryotic cells, many bacterial cytoskeletal proteins play distinct roles from their eukaryotic counterparts; for example, control of cell wall synthesis for cell division and morphogenesis. This review is aimed at providing an overview of the bacterial cytoskeleton, and discussing the roles and assembly dynamics of bacterial cytoskeletal proteins in more detail in relation to their most widely conserved functions, DNA segregation and coordination of cell wall synthesis.
