As more veterinary clinics become specialized with the growth of the companion animal market, an increasing number of veterinary clinics perform orthopedic surgery and use orthopedic products, some of which are defective and have side effects. Thus, the present study aimed to prepare fundamental data for the revision and development of manufacturing standards for these products in order to prevent their side effects. We conducted a survey targeting veterinary clinics as consumers and medical device companies as suppliers. Veterinary clinics were surveyed via offline and online methods; 320 clinics that offered orthopedic surgery and approximately 4,000 veterinary clinics that were registered in the Korean Veterinary Medical Association were targeted, and 153 veterinary clinics responded to the survey. The survey for medical device companies, was performed online, targeting 29 companies; 14 companies responded. The number of side effects of orthopedic products was higher in animal orthopedic products than in those for human use. Many consumers tended to suspect that side effects were caused by product defects. To resolve side effects after using orthopedic products, consumers mostly underwent reoperation. Meanwhile, some severe cases proceeded to legal disputes. Similarly, medical device companies, or the suppliers, responded that most side effects occurred in veterinary orthopedic products and that product defects and mistakes in use were the causes. As for most of the follow-up actions for side effects, these companies either reported the issue to those in charge or analyzed and resolved the issues themselves. Therefore, to develop quality products, suppliers should be provided with clear standards for the production, and information disclosure and a report system for side effects should be particularly established to gain consumers' trust regarding the safety of these products.

This study was conducted to investigate the distribution of private medical practitioners' income from the medical insurance and its determinants. Total amount of the medical service fee paid by the medical insurance to 1,268 private clinics(767 in Taegu and 510 in Kyungpook that had been in practice at least for one year) in 1993 was compared by the characteristics of practitioner, clinic, patient and population. The practitioners in 40-49 years of age and 6-10 years inpractice had the highest income. Total income of a clinic was increased with the number of physicians, employees and equipments. The largest income differentials were observed among obstetrics and gynecology clinics and the least differentials were among pediatrics clinics. The characteristics of practitioner, clinic and population accounted for 41.7% of the total variance of income. The important determinants of income were specialty of the clinic, age of the practitioner and number of the employee and equipments. The large income differentials among clinics imply a skewed distribution of patients and thus long waiting time, inefficient utilization of manpower and inadequate quality of care. Effective measures to reduce the income differentials need to be developed.

Objectives : The purpose of this survey is to investigate the current status of violence that occurred in Korean medicine clinics targeting medical staff. Methods : First, questionnaires were developed to investigate the actual situation of violence against medical personnel occurring within Korean medicine clinics. The questions consist of five items on the characteristics of the respondent, ten items on identifying the actual state of violence against Korean medical workers, two items on relevance to COVID-19, two items on related legal issues, and three items on policies. The survey was conducted online from 16 November 2021 to 30 November 2021. Results : Total 519 Korean medical doctors responded to the questionnaire, and 314 (60.50%) responded that they had experienced violence demage while working. While the female staffs experience significantly more violence (𝜒²=18.398, p <0.001) and sexual violence (𝜒²=74.855, p <0.001) than the males, the males tend to be more exposed to physical assault than the female (𝜒²=3.900, p = 0.048). Conclusion : Through this study, we identified the situation of violence against medical staffs in Korean medicine clinics, and concluded that it should be necessary to establish strategies for the prevention and management of violence in a social and institutional way.
