  • Objectives : The purpose of this paper is to study the metaphor that the liver is the admiral from which strategic planning is derived in 『Suwen Linglanmidianlun』 in relation to Liver function. Methods : Annotations to the verse along with descriptions of strategic planning in classical texts and their relation were examined. Results : Previous annotators described the Admiral organ and Strategic Planning separately, in which it is difficult to fully explain the totality the two. They cannot be separated from each other, and only when they are in dependence of each other can they become complete. Liver function as described in classical texts and contemporary text books such as detoxification and sterilization all embody this meaning of strategic planning of an admiral. Conclusions : Reinterpretation of the Liver function based on an integrated understanding of the Liver as described in 『Suwen Linglanmidianlun』 is required. This will allow for better understanding of what the metaphor means, and to better connect this description to Liver physiology for an integrated understanding of the Liver itself in Korean Medicine.

  • Conceptions about functions of bladder in Oriental Medicine are focused on excretion of urine, such as "Somun(素問)" "Yeong-ranbijeonron(靈蘭秘典論)". However, functions of bladder cannot be in those. In Oriental Medicine, there are sentences in "Naegyeong", the fluid and humor is dispersed to whole body. It means that bladder has a function by reabsorption of the fluid and humor in metabolism with gi transformation, besides excretion of urine. In that reason, I try to find out meanings of bladder's functions in metabolism of the fluid and humor through bibliographic review. As a result, bladder has a 2 types of function. 1st, it is a excretion of urine that we have already mentioned. 2nd, it is a reabsorption of the fluid and humor.

  • Objectives : This study analyzes herbs combinations and primary virtues that constitute the prescriptions of Gyeji-tang, Mahwang-tang, and Daecheongryong-tang to effectively analyze medication preparations described in "Shanghanlun" using database, and test the results of the data structure and effectiveness of queries. Methods : This study enters "Sanghanjapbyeongronyeonggudaeseong" as the original text into the database, and even uses one provision as independent knowledge by dividing provisions in accordance with the content. Results : Five tables and 12 queries were created and used for data input and analysis. Using the types of Herbs included in the prescriptions, this study manages to search for the same or supplemented prescriptions, and the primary virtues of the prescriptions were collected and compared. Conclusions : Subject to the combination of herbs and pathology for the prescriptions described in "Shanghanlun" utilizing the database, this study found relevant texts and combinations of herbs and pathologies, and using this, the time required for theoretical research between prescriptions could be shortened.

  • The concept of makwon(膜原) holds great importance in the texts of Seup-yeoljobyeon(濕熱條辨). Research on the concept was based on Seolsaengbaek(薛生白)'s medical theories organized by Wang Maengyeong(王孟英). The results are as follows. Seolsaengbaek describes makwon as half-exterior half-interior(半表半裏) of yang-myeong(陽明) and half-exterior half-interior of the body. The half-exterior half-interior in these definitions each hold a different meaning. In half-exterior half-interior of yang-myeong, it refers to its mediating function, focusing on the location of makwon as yang-myeong. In half-exterior half-interior of the body, it refers to an intersection where the pathological mechanism of damp-heat disease(seup-yeoljeung 濕熱證) begins, and also where the course of the disease changes. This is why treatment of the makwon is included in treating many damp-heat disease symptoms. The conditions derived from the original damp-heat disease can follow the designated prognosis, or follow a reversed course. Because of its intersecting role, treating the makwon can help prevent aggravation. In treatment, consideration of the healthygi(jeonggi 正氣), the bodily fluids(jinaek 津液) with an understanding of the various prognosis is crucial.

  • Objectives : This study examined the possibility of therapeutic application of natural pigments in the Joseon Period other than aesthetic purposes. Methods : The medicinal properties of natural pigments as written in the texts Sangayorok, Gyuhapchongseo, Imwongyeongjeji were searched and analyzed in the texts Bencaogangmu, Encyclopedia of Eastern Medicine, and the Encyclopedia of Chinese Medicinals focusing on their Qi, flavor, effects and application. Of the conditions they treated, we examined whether they treated skin conditions using external application. The Korean Medical effects of these pigments were examined based on the content of the skin chapter of the Donguibogam. Results : We were able to extract 47 kinds of natural pigments, most of which had cold nature and bitter tasting properties. In addition, most of the pigments had the effect of treating skin conditions, illnesses due to micro-organisms, and of detoxifying. Conclusions : After consideration of medicinal properties and effects of the herbs that were used as pigments in the Joseon period, it could be concluded that as these herbs not only function as pigments but also hold properties that prevent skin conditions, their therapeutic functions could have been considered when using them as pigments.

However, these study methods have some problems in dealing with lots of meaning because the comprehension of theories are dependent upon one's memory. Especially, comparison distinct medical books are more difficult matter. So, we have attempted to solve a problem. Method : We have researched medical terms in the "Piweilun" according to below the procedure. (1) Making a terms list: We have selected constituent of sentence. And we have made term list on the basis of concept of term. (2) Making a synonym list: We have collected identical conception and made a synonym list. So, using an synonym tables of DB, it is possible to search for the non-standard terms of medical theory. (3) Making a classification system: Using UMLS(Unified Medical Language System), MeSH(Medical Subject Headings), IST(International Standard Terminology) ect., we have made a classification system of oriental medicine terms in the "Piwelun". Analysis of relation between terms. Result : In the "Piweilun", there are more than 1,790s concepts. Parts of those are belonged to UMLS-Semantic Type, the other parts of those are not belonged to UMLS-Semantic Type. And those include predicate more than UMLS-Semantic Relations.
