  • It is important to check the types of drugs when treating acute drug intoxication. This study researches the clinical characteristics and types of patients hospitalized in emergency medical center for drug addiction in 2009 and 2010. By applying a drug addiction selecting kit, it studied the flexibility and clinical efficiency during diagnosis and treatment. The study result shows, among the drugs causing addiction, Sedative accounts for 34.4%, Herdicide 23.5%, Analgesic 17.2%, Insectide 7.8% and else 17.2%. Sedative showed the highest proportion both in 2009 and 2010. Among the drug addicted patients, 39 cases did not know that the drugs are poisonous and among them, the drug addiction selecting kit was positive in 32 cases (82.0%). In 42 cases where addiction was suspicious, 25 cases (59.5%) were positive in the drug addiction selecting kit. In 57 cases of using drug addiction selecting kits, the cases in which benzodiazepine was positive, were 30 and the most frequently cases were as follows; Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCA) 13 cases, Amphetamines 3 cases, barbiturate 3 cases, and piate 3 cases. In the district using drug addiction kit meaningfully had Flumazenil injection much greater impact than the one not using the kit. This proves the efficiency of the kit (p<0.05). The uses of drug addiction selecting kits are for acute drug intoxicated patients and for providing objective and scientific information when emergency medical doctor are checking unchecked poisoning drugs. It is considered that drug addiction selecting kits would give help when treating the early stage of drug addicted patients in emergency medical treatment.

More and more cases being reported in the field of occidental medicine, but very few cases have been reported in the field of oriental medicine. The purpose of this study is to report on oriental medical approaches to OPLL and OLF. Methods : Subjects of this study are 3 cases of OPLL and 3 cases of OLF who visited Won-kwang oriental medical hospital(Dept. of acupuncture and Moxibustion) from May, 2002 to October, 2003. These patients undergo oriental medical treatment such as acupuncture, cupping, Bee-Venom therapy and herbal medication and so on. We made a comparison JOA scores between before treatment and after treatment and we evaluated results of treatment. Results : The results of treatment in these six cases are as follows ; One case was evaluated 'Excellent', one case was evaluated 'Good', two cases were evaluated 'Fair' and two cases were evaluated 'Failure'. One of these cases had a surgical operation after discharge from this hospital. Conclusions : After oriental medical care for these cases, there are some improvements such as decrease of pains, relief of myelopathy etc. But, it had little effect on some cases, therefore we considered that more special study to find various and effective methods of oriental medical treatment for these diseases should be made.

  • The spontaneous pneumothorax occurs subsequent to a disruption in the continuity of the visceral pleura with escape of free air into the pleural space included primary & secondary pneumothorax that is unrelated to identifiable etiologies such as trauma. In. the 33 year period 1960 to 1993, the 230 cases of open thoracotomy were carried out for definitive treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax, at the Dept. of Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery, National Medical Center, Seoul, Korea. There were 193 men & 37 women. They ranged in age from 15 years old to 72 years old. The lesion site was on the right side in 117 and on the left in 97, the 16 cases were in bilateral lesions.Surgical indications included recurrence in 98 cases, persistent air leak in 68 cases, nonexpansion of the lung 37 cases, roentgenologically apparent bullae & blebs in 23 cases, bilateral lesions in 16 cases, combined hemothorax & prevent for recurrence in each 2 cases. The types of operation were bullectomy in 207 cases, wedge resection in 13 cases, decortication & B.P.F. closure in 6 cases, lobectomy in 2 cases, pneumonectomy, plication in each I case. The post operative complication developed in 18 cases[7.8 %], there was I case of death due to sepsis. We believed that open thoracotomy with resection or obliteration of blebs & pleurodes is provided the best protection against recurrence.
