  • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine whether firms use social media to disseminate good news to various stakeholders thereby enhancing corporate social performance (CSP). Design/methodology/approach - This study collected data from various databases such as Korea Economic Justice Institute (KEJI) Index, VALUESearch, and TS2000, and such social media platforms as Instagram and Meta (formerly known as facebook). The sample of this study includes 3,474(firm-year) observations from 799 unique Korean firms between 2013-2022. This study conducts fixed effect panel regression analysis to test the hypotheses. Findings - First, we found both corporate use of social media, and the number of uploaded corporate news on social media were positively related to CSP. We also found that positive user reactions to the news on social media were positively related to CSP. Second, we examine the moderating roles of firm age in the relationships described above. The results show that firm age strengthens both the relationship between number of uploaded news on social media and CSP, and the relationship between positive user reactions to news on social media and CSP. Research implications or Originality - This study extends the social media research in the management literature by investigating how corporate use of social media, number of uploaded corporate news on social media, and the user reactions on the news on social media affect corporate social performance. For a practical implication, our results allow the stakeholders to better predict corporate future CSP. They suggest that ceteris paribus, firms that use social media actively, vis-a-vis firms that do not use social media actively, are more likely to get good CSP scores. They also suggest that such beneficial effects of social media will become more prominent as companies get older.

  • The Digital Multimedia Broadcasting(DMB) system is developed to offer high quality multimedia content to the mobile environment. The system adopts the MPEG-4 standard for the main video, audio and other media format. For providing interactive contents, it also adopts the MPEG-4 scene description that refers to the spatio-temporal specifications and behaviors of individual objects. With more interactive contents, the scene description also needs higher bitrate. However, the bandwidth for allocating meta data, such as scene description is restrictive in the mobile environment. On one hand, the DMB terminal renders each media stream according to the scene description. Thus the binary format for scene(BIFS) stream corresponding to the scene description should be decoded and parsed in advance when presenting media data. With this reasoning, the transmission delay of the BIFS stream would cause the delay in transmitting whole audio-visual scene presentations, although the audio or video streams are encoded in very low bitrate. This paper presents the effective optimization technique in adapting the BIFS stream into the expected bitrate without any waste in bandwidth and avoiding transmission delays inthe initial scene description for interactive DMB content.

  • Nowadays, we have many embedded systems which store and process multimedia data. For multimedia systems using hard disks as storage media such as DVR, existing file systems are not the right choice to store multimedia data in terms of cost. performance and reliability. In this study we designed a reliable file system with very high performance for embedded multimedia applications. The proposed file system runs with quite simple disk layout to reduce time to initialize and to recover after power failures, uses a large data block to speed up the sequential accesses, incorporates a time-based indexing scheme to improve the time-based random accesses and boosts reliability by backing up the important meta data on a small NVRAM. We implemented the file system on a Linux-based DVR and verified the performance by comparing with existing file systems.

  • As an organization or organization grows in size, many different types of data are being generated in different systems. There is a need for a way to improve efficiency by processing data smarter in different systems. Just like DataLake, we are creating a single domain model that accurately describes the data and can represent the most important data for the entire business. In order to realize the benefits of a DataLake, it is import to know how a DataLake may be expected to work and what components architecturally may help to build a fully functional DataLake. DataLake components have a life cycle according to the data flow. And while th data flows into a DataLake from the point of acquisition, its meta-data is captured and managed along with data traceability, data lineage, and security aspects based on data sensitivity across its life cycle. According to this reason, we have designed the DataLake Framework based on Abyss Storage Cluster.

  • According to an evolution of digital broadcasting, it is possible that terrestrial and satellite broadcasting media provide multi-channel services. CATV and satellite media have been also extended to hundreds of channels. As the result of channel expanding, viewers came to select lots of channels. But it is difficult that they select the favorite channel among hundreds of channels. In this paper, we propose an efficient automatic method to recommend channels and programs on a viewer's preference in a multi-channel broadcasting receiver like a Set ToP Box(STB). The proposed algorithm selects channels based on the following method. It makes and saves user history data by using MPEG-7 MDS based on the program information a viewer had watched. It recommends programs similar to a viewer's preference based on user history data. It selects the channel in the recommended genre based on the viewer's channel preference. The experimental result shows that the proposed scheme is efficient to select the user preference channel.

  • The emergence of online media and their data has enabled data-driven methods to solve challenging and complex tasks such as rumor classification problems. Recently, deep learning based models have been shown as one of the fastest and the most accurate algorithms to solve such problems. These new models, however, either rely on complete data or several days-worth of data, limiting their applicability in real time. In this study, we go beyond this limit and test the possibility of super early rumor detection via recurrent neural networks (RNNs). Our model takes in social media streams as time series input, along with basic meta-information about the rumongers including the follower count and the psycholinguistic traits of rumor content itself. Based on analyzing millions of social media posts on 498 real rumors and 494 non-rumor events, our RNN-based model detected rumors with only 30 initial posts (i.e., within a few hours of rumor circulation) with remarkable F1 score of 0.74. This finding widens the scope of new possibilities for building a fast and efficient rumor detection system.

  • Barriers to health seeking constitute a challenging issue in the treatment of breast cancer. The current meta-synthesis aimed to explore common barriers to health seeking among Malaysian breast cancer patients. From the systematic search, nine studies were found meeting the inclusion criteria. Data extraction revealed that health behavior towards breast cancer among Malaysia women was influenced by knowledge, psychological, sociocultural and medical system factors. In terms of knowledge, most of the Malaysian patients were observed to have cursory information and the reliance on the information provided by media was limiting. Among psychological factors, stress and sense of denial were some of the common factors leading to delay in treatment seeking. Family member's advice, cultural beliefs towards traditional care were some of the common sociocultural factors hindering immediate access to advanced medical diagnosis and care. Lastly, the delay in referral was one of the most common health system-related problems highlighted in most of the studies. In conclusion, there is an immediate need to improve the knowledge and understanding of Malaysian women towards breast cancer. Mass media should liaise with the cancer specialists to disseminate accurate and up-to-date information for the readers and audience, helping in modification of cultural beliefs that hinder timing health seeking. However, such intervention will not improve or rectify the health system related barriers to treatment seeking. Therefore, there is an immediate need for resource adjustment and training programs among health professional to improve their competency and professionalism required to develop an efficient health system.
