  • The mechanism for mechano-luminescence(ML) in SAO phosphor was investigated quantitatively by measuring the emission intensity under three different tensile conditions. It was found that the ML of SAO was strongly dependent on the dynamic loading rate rather than by the applied load itself. The mechano-luminescent emission in SAO was evaluated based on the trap-releasing process. It was found that the shape of the ML curve in the transient regime obtained from the rate equation has good agreement with the experimental data.

  • Using a mechano-luminescent(ML) paint, which allows the visualization of fast propagating crack under conventional loading conditions, a catastrophic fracture mechanism associated to crack tip melting and wake bridging in bulk metallic glass, is described in this paper. Fracture occurs in two steps with, first, crack initiation from the mechanically machined sharp notch tip in a rectangular shaped compact tension specimen and melting of its tip due to intense shear deformation within very few deformation bands. Then, the crystalline phase in the glass matrix gradually converts the molten crack into a conventional bridged crack as it propagates.

  • The propagation of a macro-scale crack and the accompanying transformation zone around it was visualized in an Y-TZP ceramic using a mechano-luminescence (ML) technique. The technique allows realistic fractures that take place catastrophically in actual applications to be realistically stimulated. Unlike conventional quasi-static R-curves, the ML technique on a relatively fast time frame permitted a so-called quasi-dynamic R-curve in the crack speed range from 50 to 140 m/sec. to be measured. Effective toughening then commenced and the applied stress intensity factor increased to 27 $MPa{\sqrt{m}}$. The transformation zone height obtained from the ML observations was in good agreement with that predicted by the Marshall model, and coincided with previously observed results for quasi-static conditions by Raman spectorscopy and x-ray analysis.
