  • The solvolysis rate constants of piperonyloyl chloride (1) in 27 different solvents are well correlated with the extended Grunwald-Winstein equation, using the $N_T$ solvent nucleophilicity scale, $Y_{Cl}$ solvent ionizing scale, and I aromatic ring parameter with sensitivity values of $0.30{\pm}0.05$, $0.71{\pm}0.02$, and $0.60{\pm}0.04$ for l, m, and h, respectively. The solvent kinetic isotope effect values (SKIE, $k_{MeOH}/k_{MeOD}$ and $k_{50%MeOD-50%D2O}$) of 1.16 and 1.12 were also in accord with the values for the $S_N1$ mechanism and/or the dissociative $S_N2$ mechanism. The product selectivity values (S) for solvolysis of 1 in alcohol/water mixtures were in the range of 0.5 to 1.9, which is also consistent with the proposed unimolecular ionization mechanism.

  • Solvolyses of trifluoromethanesulfonyl chloride (TFMSC) in water and in aqueous binary mixtures of acetone, ethanol and methanol are investigated at 25, 35 and 45 ${^{\circ}C}$. The Grunwald-Winstein plot of first-order rate constants for the solvolytic reaction of TFMSC with YCl (based on 2-adamantyl chloride) shows marked dispersions into three separate curves for three aqueous mixtures. The extended Grunwald-Winstein plots for the solvolysis of TFMSC show better correlation. The large negative ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$ and relatively small positive ${\Delta}H^{\neq}$ reveals that the solvolytic reaction proceeds via a typical bimolecular reaction mechanism. The l and m values determined in various solvents are consistent with the proposed mechanism of the general base catalysis $S_AN/S_N2$reaction mechanism for TFMSC solvolyses based on mass law and stoichiometric solvation effect studies.

  • In this paper, we developed a miniaturized humanoid having the new joint mechanism. In general, the high torque actuator and the joint mechanism having three coincided axes are important in development of the miniaturized humanoid. By using the swash plate, which is generally used in three axes rotor mechanism, we developed a new three-coincided-axes joint mechanism and a miniaturized humanoid having the joint mechanism at its hip and ankle joints. Since the joint mechanism has a pair of parallel drive motors for each axis, the driving torque of the joint mechanism is very high. Futhermore, thanks to the three-coincided-axes mechanism, the solution of the inverse kinematics is simple and computationally efficient, and the resulting walking behavior of the humanoid becomes natural.

  • It has been known that resveratrol, a phytoalexin present in grapes mainly, has antioxidant. anti-inflammatory, and cancer chemopreventive activity. One mechanism of its anti-inflammation and cancer prevention is considered to modulate cyclooxygense-2 (COX-2) activity. Since COX-2 plays an important role in inflammation and carcinogenesis, the potential COX-2 inhibitors have been considered as anti-inflammatory or cancer chemopreventive agents. (omitted)

  • Indolicidin has been known to have a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activities against Gram negative and positive bacteria. Its eight analogues were chemically synthesized. The analogue design was based on the analysis of sequence to elucidate the role of some residues in the antibacterial mechanism of indolicidin. Bactericidal activities were assayed against Escherichia coli and Proteus vulgaris, and the membrane perturbing abilities of the peptides were assayed using a dye containing liposome. Among the eight analogues, $[Gly^4, Gly^6]-Indo,\;[Ile^6,Ile^8]-Indo,\;[Lys^{12}]-Indo$ and $[Thr^2,Tyr^9]-Indo$ showed enhanced antibacterial activities. These results suggest that proline and cationic residues are important in the bactericidal activity of indolicidin. We tried to describe the antimicrobial mechanism of indolicidin with these results.

  • The MRX is an integral type ship reactor with 100 MWt power, which is designed by Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute. It is characterized by integral type PWR, in-vessel type control roe drive mechanism, water-filled containment vessel and passive decay heat removal system. Marine reactor should have high passive safety. Therefore, in this study, we simulated the loss of flow accident to verify the passive decay heat removal by natural circulation using RETRAN-03 code. auxiliary feed water systems are used for decay heat removal mechanism and results are compared with the loss of flow accident analysis using emergency decay heat removal system by JAERI. Results are very similar to case of EDRS 1 loop operation in JAERI analysis and decay heat is successfully removed by natural circulation.

  • A recent study suggested that methylation of ubiquitin-like with PHD and RING finger domain 1 (UHRF1) is regulated by SET7 and lysine-specific histone demethylase 1A (LSD1) and is essential for homologous recombination (HR). The study demonstrated that SET7-mediated methylation of UHRF1 promotes polyubiquitination of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), inducing HR. However, studies on mediators that interact with and recruit UHRF1 to damaged lesions are needed to elucidate the mechanism of UHRF1 methylation-induced HR. Here, we identified that poly [ADP-ribose] polymerase 1 (PARP1) interacts with damage-induced methylated UHRF1 specifically and mediates UHRF1 to induce HR progression. Furthermore, cooperation of UHRF1-PARP1 is essential for cell viability, suggesting the importance of the interaction of UHRF1-PARP1 for damage tolerance in response to damage. Our data revealed that PARP1 mediates the HR mechanism, which is regulated by UHRF1 methylation. The data also indicated the significant role of PARP1 as a mediator of UHRF1 methylation-correlated HR pathway.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine atmospherical factors affecting user's satisfaction in natural park to answer the research question: what are the effects of atmosphere on user's satisfaction in natural parks(NP). After reviewing the literature, mechanism of NP, and use elements in NP, We constructed the conceptual framework and have formulated the hypothesis of this research. We had obtained data through a questionnaire, which surveyed 508 visitors at 6 of the 73 NP in Korea in 2001, based on stratified sampling method. We have analyzed the data using descriptive statistical methods, the mean difference test, Pearson's correlation analysis, and the multiple linear regression method. We found that 1) the five atmospheric variables, j.e., number of users(NOU), crowding, damage to park resources(DPR), and maintenance of park resources and facilities(MPRF), encounter level(EL) affecting user's satisfaction, have tuned out to be statistically significant at a five percent level. The direction of the relationship between user's satisfaction and MPRF, NOU, EL is the same as that of the dependent variable and the opposite of crowding, and BPR, 2) in bivariate analysis, the positive relationships between user's satisfaction and park resources, MPRF are fairly high and statistically significant. The higher the value of DPR, and crowing, the lower the degree of user's satisfaction, 3) in multivariate analysis, such variables as NOU, crowding, DPR, EL, and MPRF affecting user's satisfaction have been statistically significant at five percent level, and 4) the relative contribution of MPRF, park resources, park facilities, NOU, crowding, DPR, and size of activity space on user's satisfaction have been determined to have respectively 6.00, 4.78, 2.53, 1.83, 1.64, 1.59 and 2.03 times more important than that of EL. Among the atmospheric variables, MPRF is the most important at 1.26 times higher than that of park resources. The research results suggest that the development of devices for the increase in user's satisfaction and user management program based on the knowledge we have found, be recommended in the planning and development process of natural park. The approach adopted by this research is valid and useful for evaluation criteria of NP. It is recommended that more empirical studies by activity types, activity spaces, and seasons on atmospheric elements affecting user's satisfaction be performed in the future.
