A two-dimensional numerical model based on the finite element method was built to simulate the wave propagation phenomena that occur during the ultrasonic time of flight diffraction (TOFD) process. First, longitudinal-wave TOFD was simulated, and the numerical results agreed well with the theoretical results. Shear-wave TOFD was also investigated because shear waves have higher intensity and resolution. The shear wave propagation was studied using three models with different boundary conditions, and the tip-diffracted shear-to-longitudinal wave was extracted from the A-scan signal difference between the cracked and non-cracked specimens. This signal showed very good agreement between the geometrical and numerical arrival times. The results of this study not only provide better understanding of the diffraction phenomena in TOFD, but also prove the potential of shear-wave TOFD for practical application.

The design rules are being more strict with requirement of operation speed and development of IC industry. For this reason, required minimum line-width has been narrowed under sub-micron region. As the length of minimum line-width is narrowed, local and global planarization are being prominent. CMP(Chemical-Mechanical Polishing), one of the planarizarion technology, is a process which polishes with the ascent of chemical reaction and relative velocity between pad and wafer without surface defects. CMP is performed with a complex interaction among many factors, how CMP has an interaction with such factors is not evident. Accordingly, the studies on this are still carrying out. Therefore, an examination of the CMP phenomena and an accurate understanding of compositive factors are urgently needed. In this paper, we will consider of the relations between the effects of temperature which influences many factors having an effect on polishing results and the characteristics of CMP in order to understand and estimate the influence of temperature. Then, through the interaction of shown temperature and polishing result, we could expect to boost fundamental understanding on complex CMP phenomena.

For estimation of chain-matching phenomena between normal paraffin as a solvent and straight-chain fatty acid as an additive, the density measurement of n-dodecane, n-tetradecane and n-hexadecane were carried out at oil temperature 313K and pressure up to 1.3 GPa. Their solidification pressure were easily determined by the appearance of molecular crystal, abrupt volumetric contraction and generation of heat of solidification and showed minima under the matching condition. The bulk modulus K of molecular crystal was evaluated using phase diagram. The bulk modulus showed maxima under the each matching condition. The chain matching effect on the bulk modulus beyond the scope of the interfacial phenomena are confirmed.
The heat transfer characteristics of rarefied flows in a micro-actuator are studied numerically. The effect of Knudsen number (Kn) on the heat transfer of the micro-actuator flows is also examined. The Kn based on gas density and characteristic dimension is varied from near-continuum to highly rarefied conditions. Direct simulation Monte Carlo calculations have been performed to estimate the performance of the micro-actuator. The results show that the magnitude of the temperature jump at the wall increases with Kn. Also, the heat transfer to the isothermal wall is found to increase significantly with Kn.
Partial rotor rub occurs when an obstacle on the stator of a rotating machinery disturbs the free whirling motion of the rotor, which is more common than full annular rub among the cases of rubbing in rotating machinery. The intermittent contacts and friction during partial rotor rub makes the phenomenon complex. The several nonlinear phenomena of superharmonics, subharmonics, and jump phenomenon are demonstrated for the partial rub using an experimental apparatus in this study. The orbit patterns are also measured experimentally. In order to explain the phenomena of partial rotor rub, the analytical model for the contact between the rotor and stator should be chosen carefully. In this respect, a piecewise-linear model and a rebound model using the coefficient of restitution are investigated on the basis of the experimental observations. Also, Numerical simulations for the two models of contact are done for the various system parameters of clearance, contact stiffness, and friction coefficient. The results show that the piecewise-linear model for partial rotor rub is more plausible to explain the experimental observgations.

When high-pressure gas is exhausted through nozzle exit to the atmosphere, expanded supersonic jet is formed with the Mach disk at a specific condition. In two-dimensional supersonic jets, the hysteresis phenomenon of the reflected shock waves is found to occur under quasi-steady flow conditions. Transitional pressure ratio between the regular reflection and Mach reflection in the jet is affected by this phenomenon. In the present study, experiments are carried out on internal flow in a supersonic nozzle to clarify the hysteresis phenomena for the shock waves and to discuss its interdependence on the rate of the change of pressure ratio with time. Flow visualization is carried out separately on the straight and divergent channels downstream of the nozzle throat section. The influence that the hysteresis phenomena have on the location of shock wave in a supersonic nozzle is also investigated experimentally.
In multiphase systems, surface wettability is one of dominant design parameters to enhance system performance. Since surface wettability can be maximized and minimized with micro-textured surfaces, therefore micro-textured surfaces are widely countered in various research and engineering fields. In this study, for better understanding of micrometer scaled surface wettability, spreading phenomena is experimentally investigated on the hydrophilic micro-textured surfaces. By photolithography and conventional dry etching method, there are prepared the surfaces with uniformly arrayed micro-pillars. The interfacial motions of a water droplet on the test sections are visualized by high speed camera in top view. On the basis of visualization data, it is analyzed the relation between dynamic coefficient and geometrical features on micro-textured surfaces.

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the cathode channel flooding effects at different stoichiometries in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells by using visualization techniques. The phenomena of liquid water formation and removal caused by current variations were also examined experimentally. Tests were conducted at cathode stoichiometries of 1.5 and 2.0, and the anode stoichiometry was fixed at 1.5. It is found that at an air-side stoichiometry of 2.0, liquid water begins to form and the flooding occurs faster than at an air-side stoichiometry of 1.5. Also, when the air-side stoichiometry of 1.5 is maintained, the dry-out phenomena is observed in the dry-out area 7.8 A following the field of flooding. Thus, a stoichiometry of 1.5 produced better performance in terms of membrane electrode assembly (MEA) durability and hydrogen ion conductivity than did a stoichiometry of 2.0, in which dry-out occurs beyond 8A.

The performance of gas turbines is decreased as their operating hours increase. Fouling in the axial compressor is one of main reasons for the performance degradation of gas turbine. Airborne particles entering with air at the inlet into compressor adhere to the blade surface and result in the change of the blade shape, which is closely and sensitively related to the compressor performance. It is difficult to exactly analyze the mechanism of the compressor fouling because the growing process of the fouling is very slow and the dimension of the fouled depth on the blade surface is very small compared with blade dimensions. In this study, an improved analytic method to predict the motion of particles in compressor cascades and their deposition onto blade is proposed. Simulations using proposed method and their comparison with field data demonstrate the feasibility of the model. It if found that some important parameters such as chord length, solidity and number of stages, which represent the characteristics of compressor geometry, are closely related to the fouling phenomena. And, the particle sloe and patterns of their distributions are also Important factors to predict the fouling phenomena in the axial compressor of the gas turbine.

Combustion phenomena in porous media combustors are widely used in industrial fields for the combustion of lowgrade fuels and the regeneration of combustion heat. However, studies of combustion phenomena in porous media have been limited, because these phenomena are difficult to observe, and the configurations of porous media are complex. We propose a simple model combustor: a multi-channel combustor that consists of many layers of combustion channels made of quartz plates. We conducted an experimental observation of the flames in the multi-channel combustor and obtained experimental results for the flame stabilization limits. Flames formulated in the multi-channel combustor showed variation in the spatial distribution depending on the heat transfer between neighboring channels. A simple analytical model was developed and the variation in the flammability limits of the multi-channel combustor was discussed. This study will enhance our understanding of flame behavior in a porous-media combustor.
