A Study on Back Analysis Settlement Prediction of Soft Ground Using Numerical Analysis and Measurement Data (수치해석과 계측데이터를 이용한 연약지반의 역해석 침하 예측에 관한 연구)

  • When constructing on soft ground, managing ground settlement and safety is crucial. However, there often exists a significant disparity between the actual behavior of the ground and the design plans. In this study, we aimed to compare and analyze the difference between the predicted settlement based on theoretical formulas and the measured settlement during construction, in order to predict settlement. For this purpose, we analyzed settlement data from 18 construction sites. The results indicated that the back analysis settlement values were similar to the measured settlement values, whereas the design settlement values were significantly higher compared to the measured settlement values. Specifically, the design settlement values were 1.2 to 1.4 times higher than those derived from back analysis using measured values. The RMSE analysis revealed a value of 0.6212m for the design settlement and 0.1697m for the back analysis settlement. The difference between the back analysis settlement and the measured settlement was more than 70% lower than the difference between the design settlement and the measured settlement. This indicates that the back analysis settlement values exhibit lower error rates compared to the design settlement values.

  • This study was carried out for the purpose of pre-estimating long-term settlement under condition of actual field soil's property, in case of building up industrial sites on the marine deposit silty clay located at West Coast in Korea. This study analyzed Hyperbolic Method, Square Root Time Method and Exponential Function Method with utilization of measured survey values of settlement in In-Cheon Namdong Industrial Sites. In the future, for the continuos utilization, it seemed to be needed that further the survey values of fields should be accurartely measured for the analysis of more accurate pre-estimate about long-term settlement. Among the prediction methods of settlement Hyperbolic Method seemed to be the best fitting method for measured data. The settlement equations were derived from above three methods, for long-term settlements.

  • There are many methods to accelerate for consolidation of the soft ground but, in this study, only preloading method was used to improve the soft ground. To measure the settlement of soft ground, surface-settlement plates were installed at several points. To examine settlement behavior of soft ground, back analysis was done using the measured results. In the back analysis, consolidation parameter( $c_{v}$) were obtained and it was compared with test result for undisturbed sample.e.

  • In this paper, the measured results obtained from the ground improved by SCP method at quay-wall caisson foundation in Pusan New Port 1-1 phase are analyzed and then compared with the values predicted by a consolidation theory. The measured settlement is generally smaller than the predicted settlement. For consolidation velocity, the measured velocity is later than the predicted value. According to the execution of caisson placing phases, the predicted value shows higher settlement than the measured one with time being.

  • In this study, it was proposed that a modified equation for estimating consolidation settlement on soft clay ground, which separate total settlement into primary and secondary settlement equation. The settlement by the proposed equation and by the measured settlements from laboratory model test was compared and verified for its application. It was appeared that the proposed equation from the laboratory model test approached to be more realistic comparing to the result of Terzaghi's equation. From the above application, it was concluded that the final settlement prediction by the Hyperbolic, Asaoka methods is needed to measure the initial period of settlement but the proposed equation could be much applicable in the lacking condition of measured data of the initial period.

  • This paper estimates the long-term settlement of In-cheon unsanitary solid waste landfills. which is 20 years old. The unsanitary solid waste landfills was subjected to pre-loading system over a period of 1 year, and the settlement for 300 landfill monitors provided measured data. This landfill contain relatively small amount of organic component, therefore the initial stage of settlement was very small. The existing settlement models are examineed to compare with the observed behavior of this site and, also to estimate long-term settlement. The Hyperbolic, Bjarngard & Edgers, and Power Creep Law models showed good agreement well with the measured settlement of the In-cheon unsanitary solid waste landfills.

  • In This paper, load-settlement curves that obtained from 11 sites were analyzed. At all tests, the load is applied until apparent failure is observed. The validity of the ultimate and yield load estimation method and load calculated from the settlement criterion was investigated through comparison with the measured data. The result indicated that B. Hansen 80% criterion and Stability Plot in ultimate loading decision law almost have been regared as same by comparing measured date and ultimate bearing capacity decided in depending yield loading decision law from 13% to 46% difference have taeyaeen came out when measured data and Davisson was compared, and S-log t from 5% to 41% log P-log S from 14% to 50% difference have been came out. When Settlement standard and measured data was compared difference had been came out about 3% in total settlement 0.1D criterion and from 12% to 35% difference had been came out in net settlement.

  • In this study, it was developed that the software could be used to estimate consolidation settlement by curve fitting method according to Terzaghi's consolidation theory on the condition of gradual incremental loading, and the method of estimating settlement caused by lateral displacement was suggested, in which the settlement was calculated from the difference between the settlement calculated with the developed software using the early part of measured data and the settlement measured for the short duration from the beginning of embankment in the field. The verification of the suggested method of estimating settlement caused by lateral displacement showed good results.

  • Waste body settlement is an important aspect of management of landfill sites both during the operational and the post-closure phases. Settlement in landfill waste is caused by combination of load, creep and biodegradation induced effects. In this paper, settlement characteristics of closed waste landfill were studied by analyzing in situ measured data and computer simulation technique. Techniques for the analysis of load-induced and creep settlement, and for their implementation, can be adapted for landfill waste. The estimate of settlements from models shows a increase according to time.
