The measurements of velocities of internal flow in a scaled-up nozzle were made by laser Doppler velocimetry in order to clarify the effect of internal flow on the characteristics of fuel spray. The investigated length to diameter ratio(L/d) of the orifice were 1, 3, 4, 5 and 8, and inlet radius to diameter ratio(r0/d) were 0 and 0.5. Mean and fluctuating velocities and discharge coefficients were obtained at various Reynolds number ranging between 15,000 and 28,000, and L/d ranging between 1 and 8 in sharp and round inlet nozzle. The turbulent intensity and turbulent kinetic energy at exit in a sharp inlet nozzle were higher than that in a round inlet nozzle. For sharp inlet nozzle, fluctuating velocities near exit were decreased with increasing L/d.

Direct numerical simulations were performed to investigate the physics of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer flow subjected to spanwise oscillating electromagnetic forces in the near wall region. A fully implicit fractional step method was employed to simulate the flow. The mean flow properties and the Reynolds stresses were obtained to analyze the near-wall turbulent structure. It is found that skin friction and turbulent kinetic energy can be reduced by the electromagnetic forces. The decrease in production is responsible fur the reduction of turbulent kinetic energy. Instantaneous flow visualization techniques were used to observe the response of streamwise vortices and streak structures to spanwise oscillating forces. The near-wall vortical structures are affected by spanwise oscillating electromagnetic forces. Following the stopping of the electromagnetic force, the flow eventually relaxes back to a two-dimensional equilibrium boundary layer.

An experimental study on the structure of a separated shear layer downstream of the backward-facing step has been performed by examining mean flow and turbulent quantities in terms of free stream turbulence. When free stream turbulence exists, the entrainment rate of the separated shear layer and the flow rate in the recirculation region are enhanced, resulting in shorter reattachment length. The production and diffusion terms in the turbulent kinetic energy balance are shown to increase more than the dissipation term does. Rapid decrease of the pressure-strain term in the shear stress balance implies the enhancement of the three-dimensional motion by free stream turbulence.

This paper represents the vector fields, three dimensional mean velocities, the turbulent intensities, the turbulent kinetic energy, and the Reynolds shear stresses in the X-Y plane of gas swirl burner with a cone type baffle plate measured by using X-probe from hot-wire anemometer system. This experiment is carried out at flow rates 350 and 450ℓ/min respectively, which are equivalent to the combustion air flow rate necessary for heat release 15,000 kcal/hr in gas furnace, in the test section of subsonic wind tunnel. The vector plot shows that the maximum axial mean velocity component exists in the narrow slits situated radially on the edge of gas swirl burner, for that reason, there is some entrainment phenomena of ambient air in the outer region of burner. Moreover, mean velocities in the initial region are largely distributed near the outer region of burner at Y/R≒0.97, but they diffuse and develop into the center flow region of burner according to the increase of axial distance. The turbulent intensities and the turbulent kinetic energy due to large inclination of mean velocity and swirl effect show that the maximum value in the initial region of burner is formed in the narrow slits situated radially on the edge of gas swirl burner and large values are mainly formed in the entire region of burner after X/R=2.4358, hence, the combustion reaction is anticipated to occur actively near this region. And the Reynolds shear stresses are also largely distributed from slite to vanes of gas swirl burner in the intial region, but their values largely disappear after X/R=3.2052.
Cavitation phenomenon has long been a difficult problem that regarded as negative event to fluid machines or industrial facilities. In the latest, however, some engineers became to understand the power of cavitation and use it to cleaning wall after developing cavitation nozzle. In this paper, we introduce new concept for power-generation system using cavitation jet flow maid by nozzle and impulse turbine in vacuum condition. The vacuum needed to make cavitation is generated naturally by Torricelli's vacuum, 10.23m effective head drop without additional power. We analyzed water's boiling and the steam's mean free path according to vacuum purity levels for nozzles and turbine blades. The nozzles make water accelerate in the neck and boil in expansion section of the nozzles. The shape of the impulse turbine is designed for absorption of the molecule's kinetic energy of the steam.
Most of the studies on the hydraulic characteristics of wave-current interaction have used 2-D hydraulic experiments or 2-D numerical simulations. However, it is difficult to understand the wave-current interaction found in actual estuaries using these. Therefore, a numerical water tank was constructed in this study to perform simulations involving a 3-D river mouth. The result showed a change in the water surface at the river mouth from the wave-current interaction. With an increase in the ratio ($V_c/C_i$) between the river current and wave celerity, the wave height and mean water level of the river increased at the wave and current meeting point. A higher $V_c/C_i$ caused a stronger wave-current interaction and increased the turbulence kinetic energy. Thus, the wave height attenuation became larger by the wave-current interaction with a higher $V_c/C_i$. In addition, it was possible to understand the flow characteristics in the vicinity of the river mouth as a result of the wave-current interaction using the mean flow and mean time-averaged velocity at the mid-cross section of river.
The flow characteristics in a bifurcated duct are investigated experimentally. Physical properties such as mean velocity vectors, mean vorticity, and total pressure distributions are obtained for three different Reynolds numbers (578, 620, 688) using PIV measurements and CFD analysis. Also, two different dividing ducts ($90^{\circ},\;60^{\circ}$) were selected for study. The results of this study would be useful to the engineers designing flow systems for heating, ventilation, air conditioning and waste-water purification plants.

In this paper molecular dynamics simulations were employed to investigate the structural and dynamic properties of hydrogen ions impacted on the Ni (100) surface with the $45^{\circ}$ incident angle. The initial kinetic energies of the hydrogen ion range from 100 to 1,600 eV. Together with the trajectory visualization of hydrogen ions, we computed scattering and penetration yields, mean energies and angles, and probability and energy distributions as a function of longitudinal and azimuthal directions. In the case of lower energy scattering ions, the multiple collision effects were found to be important to the third layers or lower. For higher energy penetrating ions, compared with the normal incident angle, it was significant the effective channeling effects through the Ni layers and the angle dependencies were indicated both in the longitudinal and the azimuthal angle directions.

Characteristics of the conical vortices on the roof corner of a rectangular prism have been investigated by using a PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. The Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity and the height of the model was 5.3$\times$10$^3$. The mean, instantaneous velocity vector fields, vorticity fields, and turbulent kinetic energy distribution were measured for two different angles of attack, 30$^{\circ}$and 45$^{\circ}$. The PIV measurements clearly observed not only the conical main vortex and the secondary vortex but also the tertiary vortex which is firstly reported in this paper. Asymmetric formation of the corner vortex for the case of 30$^{\circ}$angle of attack produces relatively the high magnitude of vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy around the bigger vortex which generates the peak suction pressure on the roof. Fairly symmetric features of the roof vortex are observed in the case of 45$^{\circ}$angle of attack, however, the dynamic characteristics are proved to be asymmetric due to the rectangular shape of the roof.

A simple but efficient grid generation technique by using the modified compressible form of stream function has been formulated. Transformation of a physical plane to a streamline plane, the Von Mises Transformation, has been widely used to solve the differential equations governing flow phenomena, however, limitation arises in low velocity region of boundary layer, mixing layer and wake region where the relatively large grid spacing is inevitable. Modified Von Mises Transformation with simple mathematical adjustment for the stream function is suggested and applied to solve the confined coaxial turbulent jet mixing with simple $\kappa-\epsilon$ turbulence model. Comparison with several experimental data of axial mean velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, and Reynolds shear stress distribution shows quite good agreement in the mixing layer except in the centerline where the turbulent kinetic energy distributions were somewhat under estimated. This formulation is strongly suggested to be utilized specially for free turbulent mixing layers in axisymmetric flow conditions such as the investigation of mixing behavior, jet noise production and reduction for Turbofan engines.
