In this work, linear and mass attenuation coefficients, effective atomic number and electron density, mean free paths, and half value layer and $10^{th}$ value layer values of barium-bismuth-borosilicate glasses were obtained for 662 keV, 1,173 keV, and 1,332 keV gamma ray energies using MCNP-4C code and XCOM program. Then obtained data were compared with available experimental data. The MCNP-4C code and XCOM program results were in good agreement with the experimental data. Barium-bismuth-borosilicate glasses have good gamma ray shielding properties from the shielding point of view.

In this research paper, the thermal transport in thorium dioxide is investigated by using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics. The thermal conductivity of bulk thorium dioxide was measured to be 20.8 W/m-K, confirming reported values, and the phonon mean free path was estimated to be between 7 and 8.5 nm at 300 K. It was observed that the thermal conductivity of thorium dioxide shows a strong dependency on temperature; the highest thermal conductivity was estimated to be 77.3 W/m-K at 100 K, and the lowest thermal conductivity was estimated to be 4.3 W/m-K at 1200 K. In addition, by simulating thorium dioxide structures with different lengths at different temperatures, it was identified that short wavelength phonons dominate thermal transport in thorium dioxide at high temperatures, resulting in decreased intrinsic phonon mean free paths and minimal effect of boundary scattering while long wavelength phonons dominate the thermal transport in thorium dioxide at low temperatures.
A parallel Monte Carlo photon migration algorithm for graphics processing units that implements an improved load-balancing strategy is presented. Conventional parallel Monte Carlo photon migration algorithms suffer from a computational bottleneck due to their reliance on a simple load-balancing strategy that does not take into account the different length of the mean free paths of the photons. In this paper, path-partition load balancing is proposed to eliminate this computational bottleneck based on a mathematical formula that parallelizes the photon path tracing process, which has previously been considered non-parallelizable. The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested using three-dimensional photon migration simulations of a human skin model.

In this paper, the dependence of MOSFET performance on the channel stress is characterized in depth. The tensile and compressive stresses are applied to CMOSFET using a nitride film which is used for the contact etch stop layer (CESL). Drain current of NMOS and PMOS is increased by inducing tensile and compressive stress, respectively, due to the increased mobility as well known. In case of NMOS with tensile stress, both decrease of the back scattering ratio ($\tau_{sat}$) and increase of the thermal injection velocity ($V_{inj}$) contribute the increase of mobility. It is also shown that the decrease of the $\tau_{sat}$ is due to the decrease of the mean free path ($\lambda_O$). On the other hand, the mobility improvement of PMOS with compressive stress is analyzed to be only due to the so increased $V_{inj}$ because the back scattering ratio is increased by the compressive stress. Therefore it was confirmed that the device performance has a strong dependency on the channel back scattering of the inversion layer and thermal injection velocity at the source side and NMOS and PMOS have different dependency on them.
In this work, we present a comprehensive and systematic approach for the derivation of the dc voltage generated by a magnetic multilayer undergoing ferromagnetic resonance, originally derived by Berger. Our alternative derivation applies especially in the limit of the spin diffusion length much longer than the carrier mean free path.
A new paradigm for the viscosity of fluid is presented by considering the fact that the viscosity is equal to the shear stress divided by the shear rate. The shear stress is obtained from the sum of kinetic and internal pressures of fluid, and the shear rate is found from the phonon velocity divided by the mean free path of the phonon. The calculated viscosities for various simple substances are in excellent agreements with those of the observed data through the wide temperature range covered both of liquid and gas phase.

This paper proposes the location estimation techniques of distributed targets with the multi-sensor data perceived through IR sensors of the military robots in consideration of obstacles. In order to match up targets with measured azimuths, to add to the depth-first search (DFS) algorithms in free-obstacle environment, we suggest the expanded DFS (EDS) algorithm including bypass path search, partial path search, middle level ending, and the supplementation of decision metric. After matching up targets with azimuths, we estimate the coordinate of each target by obtaining the intersection point of the azimuths with the least square error (LSE) algorithm. The experimental results show the error rate of estimated location, mean number of calculating nodes, and mean distance between real coordinates and estimated coordinates of the proposed algorithms.
In this paper, a measurement and analysis program is developed, that can be utilized to measure and analyze radio propagation characteristics. This program is able to control the measurement instruments including spectrum analyzer through a GPIB interface, and analyze the measured data to yield mean excess delay and RMS delay spread. The measured path loss can be compared with theoretical path loss in free space or inside tunnels. The measured and analyzed results can also be presented in the forms of graphs. As those tasks can be conducted on the measurement spot, this program is very helpful for performing and verifying measurements.
The effective mean free path model was adopted to examine the thickness effect on the thermoelectric properties of flash-evaporated n-type $Bi_2Te_{2.4}Se_{0.6}$ thin films. Annealing effects on the electron concentration and mobility were also studied, and their variations were analyzed in conjunction with antisite defects. Seebeck coefficient and electrical resistivity versus inverse thickness showed a linear relationship, and the mean free path was found to be $5120\AA$ Electron mobility was increased by annealing treatment and electron concentration was decreased considerably due to reduction of antisite defects, so that electrical conductivity was decreased and Seebeck coefficient was increased. When annealed at 473k for 1 hour, Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity were $-200\;\mu V/k\;and\;510\omega^{-1}cm^{-1}$, respectively. Therefore, the thermoelectric power factor was improved to be $20\times10^{-4}\;W/(mK^2)$.
The fast-neutron shielding behaviour (FNSB) of two clay-materials (Ball clay and Kaolin)of Southwestern Nigeria ($7.49^{\circ}N$, $4.55^{\circ}E$) have been investigated using effective removal cross section, ${\Sigma}_R(cm^{-1})$, mass removal cross section, ${\Sigma}_{R/{\rho}}(cm^2g^{-1})$ and Mean free path, ${\lambda}$ (cm). These parameters decide neutron shielding behaviour of any material. A computer program - WinNC-Toolkit has been used for computation of these parameters. The toolkit evaluates these parameters by using elemental compositions and densities of samples. The proficiency of WinNC-Toolkit code was probe by using MCNPX and GEANT4 to model fast neutron transmission of the samples under narrow beam geometry, intending to represent the actual experimental setup. Direct calculation of effective removal cross section ($cm^{-1}$) of the samples was also carried out. The results from each of the methods for each types of the studied clay-materials (Ball clay and Kaolin) shows similar trend. The trend might be the fingerprint of water content retained in each of the samples being baked at different temperature. The compositions of each sample have been obtained by Particle-Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) technique (Tandem Pelletron Accelerator: 1.7 MV, Model 5SDH). The FNSB of the selected clay-materials have been compared with standard concrete. The cognizance of various factors such as availability, thermo-chemical stability and water retaining ability by the clay-samples can be analyzed for efficacy of the material for their FNSB.
