Environmental Character and Catch Fluctuation of Set Net Ground in the Coastal Water of Hanlim in Cheju Island II. Fluctuation of Temperature, Salinity and Current (제주도 한림 연안 정치망 어장의 환경특성과 어획량 변동에 관한 연구 II. 수온 및 염분의 변동과 해수의 유동)

  • To investigate the relationships between ocean environmental characteristics, the time-series data of temperature and salinity observed at a station near at Hanlim set net in 1995 and 1996 are analyzed, and the results are as follow ; 1. In hanlim set net, the diurnal range of temperature and salinity variation in summer is very large and the amplitude of short-period fluctuation of temperature and salinity is very large. That is, not only the water of the middle and bottom layers (low temperature and high salinity) but also the coalstal water (high temperature and low salinity) appears alternatively depending on the current direction 2. from the result of mooring for 22 days in Hanlim set net, the mean speed and direction of tidal current in neap tide were 9.1 cm/sec and south westward in ebb time, and 11.6 cm/sec and north or northeastward in flood time, respectively. The highest speed of the current was 15cm/sec in ebb time, and 22.6 cm/sec in flood time. The mean speed and direction of tidal current in spring tide were 10.4 cm/sec, and southwestward in ebb time, and 12.3 cm/sec, and north or northestward in flood time, respectively. The highest speed of the current was 19.4 cm/sec in ebb time, and 20 cm/sec in flood time respectively. The mean speed of the current in flood time was larger than that in ebb time. The velocity vector along the major axis of semidiurnal tide ($M_2$) component was 1.5 times larger than that of diurnal tide ($K_1$), The major directions of two compornants were northwestward and east-southeastward and residiual current were 3.25 cm/sec and northwestward-directed. Result of TGPS Buoy tracer for 3 days between Biyang-Do and Chgui-Do showed that the mean speed was 1.6 knot in ebb time and 1.3 knot in flood time. Direction of tidal was southwestward in ebb time and northeastward in flood time respectively. The maximum current speed was 4.8 knot in ebb time and 3.7 knot in flood time respectively. The mean speed and direction of tidal in of offshore were 1.7 knot and northwestward in flood time. The residual current appeared 0.3 knot northeastward.

Nicotine dependence and the International Association for the Study of Pain neuropathic pain grade in patients with chronic low back pain and radicular pain: is there an association?

  • Background: This study investigated whether current smoking and a higher nicotine dependency were associated with chronic low back pain (LBP), lumbar related leg pain (sciatica) and/or radicular neuropathic pain. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 150 patients (mean age, 60.1 ± 13.1 yr). Demographic data, the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) neuropathic pain grade, STarT Back tool, and the Fagerström test were completed. A control group (n = 50) was recruited. Results: There was a significant difference between current smokers and nonsmokers in the chronic LBP group in the mean pain score (P = 0.025), total STarT Back score (P = 0.015), worst pain location (P = 0.020), most distal pain radiation (P = 0.042), and in the IASP neuropathic pain grade (P = 0.026). There was a significant difference in the mean Fagerström score between the four IASP neuropathic pain grades (P = 0.005). Current smoking yielded an odds ratio (OR) of 3.071 (P = 0.011) for developing chronic LBP and sciatica, and an OR of 4.028 (P = 0.002) for obtaining an IASP "definite/probable" neuropathic pain grade, for both cohorts. The likelihood for chronic LBP and sciatica increased by 40.9% (P = 0.007), while the likelihood for an IASP neuropathic grade of "definite/probable" increased by 50.8% (P = 0.002), for both cohorts, for every one unit increase in the Fagerström score. Conclusions: A current smoking status and higher nicotine dependence increase the odds for chronic LBP, sciatica and radicular neuropathic pain.

A Study on Ca and P Balance in Koran Adult Women (한국 성인 여자의 칼슘과 인 평형에 관한 연구)

  • The Ca and P balance studies were carried out with two different diets varying Ca levels : the current Korean RDA level(normal Ca diet) and the high level (High Ca diet) which was determined by adding 2SD to mean Ca intake of all subjects. The subjects were sever healthy adult woman, aged from 25 to 32 years old. The metabolic studies were conducted for two weeks with a days recess in between : during the fist week with normal Ca diet and during the second week with high Ca diet. The composition of nutrients excepting Ca of both diets was similar to subjects usual intake. The result were summarized as follows: Mean daily Ca intake was 728.8mg from norma Ca diet and 945.5mg from high Ca diet. Fecal excretion of Ca increased significantly(p<0.05) on high Ca diet, but urinary excretion of Ca did not show any differences between the two diet periods. There were also no significant differences in Ca retention between the two diet periods but it tended to be greater during high Ca diet period: 112.1mg/day during normal Ca diet period vs 208.2mg/day during high Ca diet period. Mean apparent Ca absorption was 41.2% on normal Ca diet and 42.1% on high Ca diet, indicating it was not affected by high Ca intake level used in this study. On the contrary, P retention was significantly increased up to 109.4mg/day with high Ca diet as compared to- 41mg/day with normal Ca diet. There were no significant differences in fecal and urinary excretion of P but those to be lower during high Ca diet period. The above results showed that higher Ca intake more than current RDA(700mg/day), in the level of 945.5mg/day, could increase Ca retention through Ca absorption comparable to the rate appeared on RDA level intake. P retention was also improved by high Ca intake. Therefore, higher Ca intake than the current RDA level seemed to produce favorable effects on bone health in adult women. However, the current RDA level seemed to be relatively appropriate, considering the results that all the subjects but one maintained positive Ca balance with normal Ca diet. Extent of linkage disequilibrium and effective population size of the Landrace population in Korea

  • Objective: The genetic diversity of the Landrace population, a representative maternal pig breed in Korea, is important for genetic improvement. Previously, the effective population size (Ne) has been used to infer the genetic diversity of a population of interest. In this study, we aimed to use single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data to characterize linkage disequilibrium (LD) and the Ne of the Korean Landrace population. Methods: We genotyped 1,128 Landrace individuals from three representative Korean major grand-grand-parent (GGP) farms using the Illumina PorcineSNP60 version2 BeadChip, which covers >61,565 SNPs located across all autosomes and mitochondrial and sex chromosomes. We estimated the expected LD and current Ne, as well as ancestral Ne. Results: In the Korean Landrace population, the mean LD ($r^2$) of 3.698 million SNP pairs was $0.135{\pm}0.204$. The mean $r^2$ decreased slowly with as the distance between SNPs increased, and remained constant beyond 3 Mb. According to the $r^2$ calculations, 8,085 of 3.698 million SNP pairs were in complete LD. The current Ne (${\pm}$standard deviation) of the Korean Landrace population is approximately 92.27 [79.46; 105.07] individuals. The ancestral Ne exhibited a slow and steady decline from 186.61 to 92.27 over the past 100 generations. Additionally, we observed more a rapid Ne decrease from the past 20 to 10 generations ago, compared with other intervals. Conclusion: We have presented an overview of LD and the current and ancestral Ne values in the Korean Landrace population. The mean LD and current Ne for the Korean Landrace population confirm the genetic diversity and reflect the history of this pig population in Korea.

Effects of Glibenclamide on $Na^+-K^+$ Pump and L-type $Ca^{2+}$ Channel in Guinea-pig Ventricular Myocytes

  • Glibenclamide, a sulfonylurea derivative, has been used in tile treatment of type II diabetes mellitus. Recent studies provided evidence that glibenclamide, in addition to blocking ATP-sensitive $K^{+}$ channels, also affected Na$^{+}$-K$^{+}$ pumps and L-type $Ca^{2+}$ channels in noncardiac cells. The effect of glibenclamide on the cardiac muscle is not clearly known. In the present study, the effects of glibenclamide on intracellular Na$^{+}$ concentration ([Na$^{+}$]$_{i}$ ), twitch tension, $Ca^{2+}$ transient, and membrane potential were investigated in isolated guinea-pig ventricular myocytes. Glibenclamide at concentration of 200 $\mu$M increased [Na$^{+}$]$_{i}$ by 3.9$\pm$0.4 mM (mean $\pm$ SE, n=12), decreased twitch tension by 36.1 $\pm$ 4.0% (mean $\pm$ SE, n=8), reduced $Ca^{2+}$ transient by 24.4$\pm$5.1% (mean $\pm$ SE, n=3), slightly depolarized diastolic membrane potential, and did not change action potential duration. To determine whether inhibitions of Na$^{+}$-K$^{+}$ pumps and L-type $Ca^{2+}$ channels are responsible for the increase of [Na$^{+}$]$_{i}$ and the decrease of twitch tension, we tested effects of glibenclamide on Na$^{+}$-K$^{+}$ pump current and L-type $Ca^{2+}$ current. Glibenclamide decreased Na$^{+}$-K$^{+}$ pump current and L-type $Ca^{2+}$ current in a concentration-dependent manner.t in a concentration-dependent manner.

Study on the Fast Predication of the Wind-Driven Current in the Sachon Bay (사천만에서 취송류의 신속예측에 관한 연구)

  • In order to fast predict the wind-driven current in a small bay, a convolution method in which the wind-driven current can be generated only wih the local wind is developed and applied in the Sachon Bay. The root mean square(rms) ratio defined as the ratio of the rms error to the rms speed is 0.37. The rms ratio is generally less than 0.2, except for all the mouths of Junju Bay and Namhae-do and in the region between Saryang Island and Sachon. The spatial average of the recover rate of kinetic energy(rrke) is 87%. Thus, the predicted wind-driven current by the convolution model is in a good agreement with the computed one by the numerical model. The raio of the difference between observed residual current (Vr) and predicted wind-driven current (Vc) to a residual current, that is, (Vr-Vc)/Vr shows 56%, 62% at 2 moorings in the Sachon Bay.

  • As process parameters scale, interconnect width are reduced rapidly while the current flowing through interconnects does not decrease in a proportional manner. This effect increases current density in metal interconnects which may result in poor reliability. Since RMS(root-mean-square) current limits are used to evaluate self-heating and short-time stress failures caused by high-current pluses, RMS current estimation is very important to guarantee the reliability of semiconductor systems. Hence, it is critical to estimate the current limits through interconnects earlier in semiconductor design stages. The purpose of this paper is to propose a fast, yet accurate RMS current estimation technique that can offer a relatively precise estimate by using closed-form equations. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method have been verified through simulations using HSPICE for a vast range of interconnect parameters.

Observations of Bottom Currents in the Korea Strait (대한해협 저층해류의 관측)

  • A steady, strong southward flow was observed in the lower layer beneath the Tsushima Warm Current in the deepest trough of the Korea Strait. Known as the Korea Strait Bottom Cold Water (KSBCW), this bottom current had a mean velocity of 24 cm/s and temperatures below 8–10℃. The direction of the bottom current was highly stable due to the topographic effects of the elongated trough. To determine the path of the southward bottom current, ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) data from 14 stations between 1999 and 2005 were examined. Persistent southward flows with average speeds of 4–10 cm/s were observed at only three places to the north of the strait where the bottom depths were 100–124 m. The collected data suggest a possible course of the southward bottom current along the southeast Korean coast before entering the deep trough of the Strait.

  • Thermoacoustic oscillation induced by a heater in a tube with air current is studied theoretically. Linearized perturbation equations are derived in dimensionless form under the assumption that the system is one dimensional. The equation to predict the acoustic power generation from a heating surface is derived and calculated by solving differential equations numerically. The effect of the mean velocity of the air current is illustrated. The energy conversion mechanism is shown by pressure-volume diagram like a heat engine.

An Algorithm for Color Object Tracking (색상변화를 갖는 객체추적 알고리즘)

  • Conventional color-based object tracking using Mean Shift algorithm does not provide appropriate result when initial color distribution disappears. In this paper we propose a tracking algorithm that updates the object color sample when the color is changing. Mean Shift analysis is first used to derive the object candidate with maximum increase in density direction from current position. The color information of object is updated iteratively. The proposed algorithm achieves accurate tracking of objects when initial color samples are changed and finally disappeared. The validity of the effective approach is illustrated by the experimental results.
