In tread brake of freight cars, brake force is produced by the friction between the wheel and the brake shoe. Friction coefficients associated with the brake power, weight variation and brake shoe types should be sensitively treated as the design parameters. The conditions of the car, empty and loaded, should also be taken into consideration in brake force design and the control of brake force has some limitations in terms of the brake system design so that the brake friction materials selection should be considered as important measures to solve that difficulties. Friction characteristics of brake friction materials should remain within the range of maximum and minimum value and the friction performance should remain stable regardless of brake time and temperature. This study presented an experimental evaluation method to secure optimum brake performance by keeping safe brake effect and brake distance by the friction coefficient of the brake shoe of the freight cars.
Two marine bivalve shells were collected from the eastern and western coastal regions of Korea, respectively. Stable oxygen and carbon isotope profiles are constructed using the incremental sampling along the axis of maximum growth to provide the continuous ${\delta}^{18}$O and ${\delta}^{13}$C records, which register the physical, biological and chemical properties of seawater where the organisms live. Cycles in the ${\delta}^{18}$O profiles are interpreted as annual along with the identification of annual growth bands; the maximum ${\delta}^{18}$O values correspond with the coldest temperature of seawater whereas the minimum ${\delta}^{18}$O values with the warmest temperature. The primary control on the amplitude of the ${\delta}^{18}$O profiles is seasonal variation of seawater temperature. The offset of the baseline between ${\delta}^{18}$O values of the two specimens is attributed to differences in both temperature and seawater ${\delta}^{18}$O values between two localities. The ${\delta}^{13}$C profiles show the similar seasonality of carbon cycling associated with phytoplankton productivity. The offset in the ${\delta}^{13}$C profiles between two specimens may be, as in the case of oxygen isotope profile, attributed to the different ${\delta}^{13}$C value of the seawater DIC (dissolved inorganic carbon) between the western coast and the eastern coast. Relationships between the shell isotopic composition and the coastal water properties of shell growth are readily interpreted from the ${\delta}^{18}$O-${\delta}^{13}$C pair diagram of the shell isotope data, similar to the use of salinity-${\delta}^{18}$O diagram for identifying water masses. The preliminary stable isotope results of this study suggest that mollusk shell isotope geochemistry may be useful to monitor the properties of water masses in the coastal and inner shelf setting around Korea and improve the interpretation of paleoceanography, provided the fossil mollusks are well preserved.
In this study, the core dynamics of a PWR reactor is identified online by a recursive least-squares method. Based on the identified reactor model consisting of the control rod position and the core average coolant temperature, the future average coolant temperature is predicted. A model predictive control method is applied to designing an automatic controller for the thermal power control of PWR reactors. The basic concept of the model predictive control is to solve an optimization problem for a finite future at current time and to implement as the current control input only the first optimal control input among the solutions of the finite time steps. At the next time step, this procedure for solving the optimization problem is repeated. The objectives of the proposed model predictive controller are to minimize both the difference between the predicted core coolant temperature and the desired temperature, as well as minimizing the variation of the control rod positions. In addition, the objectives are subject to the maximum and minimum control rod positions as well as the maximum control rod speed. Therefore, a genetic algorithm that is appropriate for the accomplishment of multiple objectives is utilized in order to optimize the model predictive controller. A three-dimensional nuclear reactor analysis code, MASTER that was developed by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) , is used to verify the proposed controller for a nuclear reactor. From the results of a numerical simulation that was carried out in order to verify the performance of the proposed controller with a $5\%/min$ ramp increase or decrease of a desired load and a $10\%$ step increase or decrease (which were design requirements), it was found that the nuclear power level controlled by the proposed controller could track the desired power level very well.
This paper deals with the seasonal variation of soil resistivity and the special characteristic for ground rods by lapse of time. The ground resistance was changed by humidity, temperature of earth and earth resistance. In this experiment, we studied the resistivity during the period from June 1995 to May 1996 by the soil and the corrosion of the ground rods. As a result, the soil resistivity during the period are appeared minimum in summer and maximum in winter. The loss in weight of Fe rod appeared higher than Cu, Al, Cu-Zn, and St. In the lapse of time, Fe rod was reduced 1.2 % later two years and 1.95 % later three years in weight. Cu rod was defected oxygens of 14.7 % later two years and 30.3 % later three years by EDX.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the fluid flow characteristics of heat storage in sensible heat storage system for use In cooling and heating of buildings. Heat storage material was gravels and experiments were performed in the condition of constant temperature. The experimental parameters were fluid velocity and size of gravels. The experimental results of the heat storage quantity and the heat storage efficiency by the variation of packing size and fluid velocity were as the follows : The maximum value of the heat storage capacity and heat storage efficiency and the minimum arriving time for maximum heat storage were observed when the packing ratio was 72.5% and the fluid velocity was 0.14m/s.
Based on the linear electro-optic (EO) effect of lithium niobite (LiNbO3, LN) crystal, an intense two-dimensional (2D) electric field sensor was analyzed, fabricated and experimentally demonstrated. The linear polarized light beam transmits along the optical axis (z-axis) of the LN crystal, and the polarization direction of the polarized light is 45° to the y-axis. The sensor can detect the intensity of a 2D electric field that is perpendicular to the z-axis. Experimental results demonstrated that the minimum detectable electric field of the sensor is 10.5 kV/m. The maximum detected electric field of the sensor is larger than 178.9 kV/m. The sensitivity of the sensor is 0.444 mV/(kV·m-1). The variation of the sensitivity is within ±0.16 dB when the sensor is rotated around a z-axis from 0° to 360°. The variation of the sensor output optical power is within ±1.4 dB during temperature change from 19 ℃ to 26 ℃ in a day (from 7:00 AM to 23:00 PM) and temperature change from 0 ℃ to 40 ℃ in a controllable temperature chamber. All theoretical and experimental results revealed that the fabricated sensor provides technology for the direct detection of intense 2D electric fields.

A long-term growth simulation was performed at 99 land units in Yeoncheon county to test the potential adaptability of each land unit for growing soybean cultivars. The land units for soybean cultivation(CZU), each represented by a geographically referenced land patch, were selected based on land use, soil characteristics, and minimum arable land area. Monthly climatic normals for daily maximum and minimum temperature, precipitation, number of rain days and solar radiation were extracted for each CZU from digital climate models(DCM). The DCM grid cells falling within a same CZU were aggregated to make spatially explicit climatic normals relevant to the CZU. A daily weather dataset for 30 years was randomly generated from the monthly climatic normals of each CZU. Growth and development parameters of CROPGRO-soybean model suitable for 2 domestic soybean cultivars were derived from long-term field observations. Three foreign cultivars with well established parameters were also added to this study, representing maturity groups 3, 4, and 5. Each treatment was simulated with the randomly generated 30 years' daily weather data(from planting to physiological maturity) for 99 land units in Yeoncheon to simulate the growth and yield responses to the inter-annual climate variation. The same model was run with input data from the Crop Experiment Station in Suwon to obtain a 30 year normal performance of each cultivar, which was used as a "reference" for evaluation. Results were analyzed with respect to spatial and temporal variation in yield and maturity, and used to evaluate the suitability of each land unit for growing a specific cultivar. A computer program(MAPSOY) was written to help utilize the results in a decision-making procedure for agrotechnology transfer. transfer.
This study aims to reveal the relationship between major climatic factors and radial growth in Siu-ri, NamYangJuSi, Kyeonggido. To identify tree growth responses to climatic variation, we used correlation analysis after standardization and cross-dating of tree ring growth. We use the climatic data(monthly mean, minimum, maximum temperature and precipitation) from September of previous year to August of current year. In terms of relationship between mean, minimum, maximum temperature and tree ring growth, negative correlations were observed in September and October of the previous year. In case of Quercus mongolica, negative relationship were appeared in December of the previous year, January and February of present year. When it comes monthly maximum temperature, August and September of present year was negatively correlated with radial growth in the case of Pinus densiflora. We can conclude that reduced soil moisture due to high temperatures causes a water stress that stunts tree growth. In contrast, there are positive correlations in March of present year. These results suggest that high temperatures in March appear to prolong the growing season. Growth was positively correlated with precipitation from October to December of previous year and from May to September of present year. The results suggest that the smooth water supply from precipitation can promote the tree growth.

Natural emissions of NOx from soils were measured at an agricultural corn field during 3 weeks of growing season in summer (from May to June) 1995. This experiment was conducted in an effort to characterize the role of soil NOx on tropospheric ozone formation in rural atmosphere, and understand the natural NOx emission mechanism with respect to soil parameters. NO fluxes were ranged from 3.1 ng Nm$^{-2}s^{-1}$ to 259.0 ng Nm$^{-2}s^{-1}$, and average NO flux during experimental period was found to be 47.6 $\pm$ 50.6 ng Nm$^{-2}s^{-1}$ with 732 number of data. Diurnal variation of NO flux was shown clearly with daytime maximum and nighttime minimum. NO fluxes were correlated with soil temperature. Exponential soil temperature dependency of NO fluxes was found with 0.0160$^{circ}C^{-1} of k and r^2=0.508$, which agrees well to the value estimated at corn fields in eastern United States. The significant increases of NO fluxes from agricultural soil were detected after applying N fertilizers to soil. THe mechanisms attributed to this are enhanced biological nitrification and denitrification. In the view of rural ozone formation, the roles of natural NO emissions are very essential, especially in NOx - limited region such as southern United States.
