Global environmental concerns and the ever increasing need of energy, coupled with steady progress in renewable energy technologies, are opening up new opportunities for utilization of renewable energy resources. Distributed electricity generation is a suitable option for sustainable development thanks to the load management benefits and the opportunity to provide electricity to remote areas. Solar energy being easy to harness, non-polluting and never ending is one of the best renewable energy sources for electricity generation in present and future time. Due to the random and intermittent nature of solar source, PV plants require the adoption of an energy storage and management system to compensate fluctuations and to meet the energy demand during night hours. This paper presents an efficient, economic and technical model for the design of a MPPT based grid connected PV with battery storage and management system. This system satisfies the energy demand through the PV based battery energy storage system. The aim is to present PV-BES system design and management strategy to maximize the system performance and economic profitability. PV-BES (photovoltaic based battery energy storage) system is operated in different modes to verify the system feasibility. In case of excess energy (mode 1), Li-ion batteries are charged using CC-CV mechanism effectively controlled by fuzzy logic based PID control system whereas during the time of insufficient power from PV system (mode 2), batteries are used as backup to compensate the power shortage at load and likewise other modes for different scenarios. This operational mode change in PV-BES system is implemented by State flow chart technique based on SOC, DC bus voltages and solar Irradiance. Performance of the proposed PV-BES system is verified by some simulations study. Simulation results showed that proposed system can overcome the disturbance of external environmental changes, and controls the energy flow in efficient and economical way.

To increase the efficiency of the photovoltaic, almost photovoltaic appliances are controlled by Maximum Power Point Tracking(MPPT). Existing most of the PV MPPT techniques have used power which multiplies sensed output current and voltage of the solar cell. However, these algorithms are unnecessarily complicated and too expensive for small and compact system. The other hand, the proposed MPPT technique is only one sensing of the MPPT converter's output current, so there is no need to insert another sensors of battery side. Therefore, this algorithm is simpler compared to the traditional approach and is suitable for low power solar system. Further, the novel proper charge/discharge algorithm for the battery with PV MPPT is developed. In this algorithm, there is CC battery charge mode and load discharge mode of the PV cell & battery dual. Also we design current control to regulate allowable current during the battery charging. The proposed algorithm will be applicable to battery included solar cell applications like solar lantern and solar remote control car. Finally, the proposed method has been verified with computer simulation.

In photovoltaic system, the characteristics of photovoltaic module such as open circuit voltage and short circuit current will be changed because of cell temperature and solar radiation. Therefore, the boost converter of a PV system connects between the output of photovoltaic system and DC link capacitor of grid connected inverter as controlling duty ratio for maximum power point tracking(MPPT). This paper shows the dynamic characteristics of the boost converter by comparing single-loop and two-loop control algorithm using both analog and digital control. Both proposed compensation methods have been verified with computer simulation to demonstrate the validity of the proposed control schemes.

The frequency of a power system should be kept within limits to produce high-quality electricity. For a power system with a high penetration of wind generators (WGs), difficulties might arise in maintaining the frequency, because modern variable speed WGs operate based on the maximum power point tracking control scheme. On the other hand, the wind speed that arrives at a downstream WG is decreased after having passed one WG due to the wake effect. The rotor speed of each WG may be different from others. This paper proposes an algorithm for assigning the droop of each WG in a wind power plant (WPP) based on the rotor speed for the virtual inertial control considering the wake effect. It assumes that each WG in the WPP has two auxiliary loops for the virtual inertial control, i.e. the frequency deviation loop and the rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) loop. To release more kinetic energy, the proposed algorithm assigns the droop of each WG, which is the gain of the frequency deviation loop, depending on the rotor speed of each WG, while the gains for the ROCOF loop of all WGs are set to be equal. The performance of the algorithm is investigated for a model system with five synchronous generators and a WPP, which consists of 15 doubly-fed induction generators, by varying the wind direction as well as the wind speed. The results clearly indicate that the algorithm successfully reduces the frequency nadir as a WG with high wind speed releases more kinetic energy for the virtual inertial control. The algorithm might help maximize the contribution of the WPP to the frequency support.

A stand-alone Photovoltaic (PV) system is one of the most important energy system for Mongolian nomadic herders. Basically, a stand-alone PV system uses two DC-DC converters. This makes the system costly, size bigger and difficult to move from one place to another place for the nomadic herders. A combined control algorithm for charging the battery using Stage of Charge (SOC) and Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is proposed in this paper. The batteries are charged by the three stage method; bulk, absorption and float charge. In the bulk stage used the MPPT function in this study. The performance of the proposed control algorithm is evaluated in both steady and changing weather conditions. The results are obtained using PSIM software. The results obtained in this paper are useful in designing a stand-alone PV system in the rural life like Mongolian nomadic herders.

The major objective of this study is to develop and verify the KAUSAT-5 based on the modular 3U CubeSat standard platform. In the mechanical system design of a 3U standard platform, subsystem and micro equipment functions/performance should be integrated and miniaturized on micro-sized PCBs and electrical capability was maximized to accommodate multiple payloads. KAUSAT-5 is 3U-sized Cubesat which will be operated in Low Earth Orbit(LEO), which implements mainly two scientific missions; one is to observe the Earth through infrared camera and the other is to measure space radiation with a Geiger Muller tube. An additional mission is to verify the equipment(device) such as VSCMG and fuzzy logic-based MPPT internally developed. The results of ETB, qualification and acceptance level environmental tests were shown to verify standard platform and KAUSAT-5 Cubesat.

In order to verify the efficiency or availability and stability of photovoltaic(PV) generation systems, huge system apparatuses are needed, in general, in which an actual size of solar panel, a type of converter system and some amount of load facilities should be installed in a particular location. It is also hardly possible to compare a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) control scheme with others under the same weather and load conditions in an actual PV generation system. The only and a possible way to bring above-mentioned problem to be solved is to realize a transient simulation scheme for PV generation systems using real weather conditions such as insolation and surface temperature of solar cell. The authors, in this paper, introduces a novel simulation method, which is based on a real-time digital simulator (RTDS), for PV generation systems under the real weather conditions. Firstly, VI characteristic equation of a solar cell is developed as an empirical formula and reconstructed in the RTDS system, then the real data of weather conditions are interfaced to the analogue inputs of the RTDS. The outcomes of the simulation demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed simulation scheme in this paper. The results shows that the cost effective verifying for the efficiency or availability and stability of PV generation systems and the comparison research of various control schemes like MPPT under the same real weather conditions are possible.

This paper describes a DC-DC converter with MPPT control for thermoelectric energy harvesting. The designed circuit converts low voltage harvested from a thermoelectric generator into higher voltage for powering a load. A start-up circuit supplies VDD to a controller, and the controller turns on and off a NMOS switch of a main-boost converter. The converter supplies the boosted voltage to the load through the switch operation. Bulk-driven comparators can do the comparison under low voltage condition and are used for voltage regulation. Also, bulk-driven comparators raise system's efficiency. A peak conversion efficiency of 76% is achieved. The proposed circuit is designed in a 0.35um CMOS technology and its functionality has been verified through simulations. The designed chip occupies $933um{\times}769um$.

Recently, research on renewable energy technologies has come into the spotlight due to rising concerns over the depletion of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions. Demand for portable electronic and wearable devices is increasing, and electronic devices are becoming smaller. Energy harvesting is a technology for overcoming limitations such as battery size and usage time. In this paper, the V-I characteristic curve and internal resistance of thermal electric devices were analyzed, and MPPT control methods were compared. The Perturbation and Observation (P&O) control method is economically inefficient because two sensors are required to measure the voltage and current of a Thermoelectric Generator(TEG). Therefore, this paper proposes a new MPPT control method that tracks MPP using only one sensor for the regulation of the output voltage. The proposed MPPT control method uses the relationship between the output voltage of the load and the duty ratio. Control is done by periodically sampling the output voltage of the DC-DC converter to increase or decrease the duty ratio to find the optimal duty ratio and maintain the MPP. A DC-DC converter was designed using a cascaded boost-buck converter, which has a two-switch topology. The proposed MPPT control method was verified by simulations using PSIM, and the results show that a voltage, current, and power of V=4.2 V, I=2.5 A, and P=10.5 W were obtained at the MPP from the V-I characteristic curve of the TEG.
