Verification and Validation of Dynamic Clearance in Digital Mockup Using Engine Movement Roll Data (엔진 거동을 고려한 DMU(Digital Mockup)에서의 다이나믹 간격 검증)

  • This paper presents dynamic clearance verification considering engine movement for vehicle engine room package and validates through physical vehicle test. Traditionally, static clearance guide has been used for engine room package, but it's only 2-dimension criteria that results in requiring unnecessary space and it's not possible to conduct engine movement with real driving conditions. Thus, the dynamic DMU considers engine movement based on 28 load cases that are Roll Data analyzed by CAE for maximum engine movement and visualizes part-to-part dynamic clearance into virtual space. The dynamic DMU enables to develop compact engine room package without unnecessary space. The result of comparison between simulation and physical test has 0.892 correlation coefficient.

  • Recent vehicle regulations have become increasingly stringent in order to reduce greenhouse gases. Then not only movement to replace internal combustion engine vehicles with hybrid vehicles, but also studies of replacing internal combustion engine fuels with low-pollution fuels are increasing. In this study, the characteristics of a vehicle with LPG fuel engine and mild hybrid system is investigated. To avoid shortage of maximum power on LPG engine, a direct injection system of LPG is applied. In addition, P0 mild hybrid system is adopted to enhence the efficiency of the vehicle. The vehicle model is developed in order to predict fuel economy and CO2 emission of LPDi MHEV.

A Study of wear and Matching of Diesel Engine Exhaust Valve and Seat Insert Depending on Valve Materials (디젤엔진 배기밸브와 시트 인서트의 밸브 재질에 따른 마모 및 매칭성 연구)

  • The wear on engine valve and seat insert is one of the most important factors affecting engine performance. The engine valve and seat insert must be able to withstand the severe environment that is created by: high temperature exhaust gases generated while the engine is running, rapid movement of the valve spring, high pressure generated in the explosive process. In order to study such problems, a simulator has been developed to generate and control high temperatures and various speeds during motion. The wear simulator is considered to be a valid simulation of the engine valve and seat insert wear process with various speeds during engine activity. This work focused on the test of various degrees of wear on four different exhaust valve materials such as HRV40, HRV40-FNV (face nitrided valve), STL #32, STL #6,. Throughout all tests performed in this study, the outer surface temperature of the seat insert was controlled at $350^{\circ}C$, the cycle number was $4.0{\times}10^6$, the test load was 6860 N, the fuel was LPG the test speed was 20 Hz (2400 RPM) and the seat insert material was HVS1-2. The mean (standard deviation) maximum roughness of the exhaust valve and seat insert was $25.44\;(3.16)\;{\mu}m$ and $27.53\;(3.60)\;{\mu}m$ at the HRV40, $21.58\;(2.38)\;{\mu}m$ and $25.94\;(3.07)\;{\mu}m$ at the HRV40-FNV, $36.73\;(8.98)\;{\mu}m$ and $61.38\;(7.84)\;{\mu}m$ at the STL #32, $73.64\;(23.80)\;{\mu}m$ and $60.80\;(13.49)\;{\mu}m$ at the STL #6, respectively. It was discovered that the maximum roughness of exhaust valve was lower as the high temperature hardness of the valve material was higher under the same test conditions such as temperature, test speed, cycle number, test load and seat insert material. The set of the HRV40-FNV exhaust valve and the HVS1-2 seat insert showed the best wear resistance.

Failure Analysis of Connecting Rod at Small End (커넥팅로드 소단부 파단의 해석)

  • Failure of connecting rod in automotive engine may cause catastrophic situation. The corner radius at small end has an effect on stress raising. To investigate the stress distribution in connecting rod during operation, the finite element analysis was used by giving possible maximum tension and compression. Excessive sizing after forging connecting rod may result in the tensile residual stress which lower the fatigue life and cause premature failures. It was shown that when the sizing amount is too large, the location of high tensile residual stress coincide with that of high stress amplitude during operation through the elastic-plastic finite element analysis. The endurance limit moves down due to the surface finish and decarburization, which combines with the movement of resultant stress points to dangerous range. It was concluded that the precise control of sizing and enough corner radius are necessary to a reliability of connecting rod.

Development of Auto Tracking System for Baseball Pitching (투구된 공의 실시간 위치 자동추적 시스템 개발)

  • The effort identifying positioning information of the moving object in real time has been a issue not only in sport biomechanics but also other academic areas. In order to solve this issue, this study tried to track the movement of a pitched ball that might provide an easier prediction because of a clear focus and simple movement of the object. Machine learning has been leading the research of extracting information from continuous images such as object tracking. Though the rule-based methods in artificial intelligence prevailed for decades, it has evolved into the methods of statistical approach that finds the maximum a posterior location in the image. The development of machine learning, accompanied by the development of recording technology and computational power of computer, made it possible to extract the trajectory of pitched baseball from recorded images. We present a method of baseball tracking, based on object tracking methods in machine learning. We introduce three state-of-the-art researches regarding the object tracking and show how we can combine these researches to yield a novel engine that finds trajectory from continuous pitching images. The first research is about mean shift method which finds the mode of a supposed continuous distribution from a set of data. The second research is about the research that explains how we can find the mode and object region effectively when we are given the previous image's location of object and the region. The third is about the research of representing data into features that we can deal with. From those features, we can establish a distribution to generate a set of data for mean shift. In this paper, we combine three works to track baseball's location in the continuous image frames. From the information of locations from two sets of images, we can reconstruct the real 3-D trajectory of pitched ball. We show how this works in real pitching images.

  • Berthing and unberthing maneuver is essential work for marine pilots and securing the safety against risks during the maneuver is more important than anything else. Moreover, the maneuvering environment in ports and harbors has changed rapidly and got worse due to development of a new port, the advent of a new type or large-sized ship, and the rapid increase in harbor traffic. As one of measures taken to cope with such changes in the maneuvering environment and for each pilot to improve his own maneuvering ability, this paper developed laptop-based ship-handling simulator which is readily available anytime and anywhere. This paper is to develop a conning display for ship's maneuvering and electronic chart based display widely used nowadays to represent a model ship's movement. The displays were arranged appropriately considering pilot age, easy handling by mouse, using a maximum screen, proper arrangement of rudder, engine, thruster, tug etc and representation of information. Up to now thirteen (13) model ships were developed based on real-ship, whose mathematical model is Japanese MMG & pilots' low speed maneuver.
