  • We propose an interior permanent magnet syhchronous motor (IPMSM) with arc-shape ferrite permanent magnets (PMs) as a substitute for the rare-earth permanent magnet, and determine its optimal design through parametric study. First, we use 2D finite element analysis to analyze 4-poles and 6-slots initial model according to performance requirements and design parameters. The current angle of the maximum average torque considered in the analysis is different compared with the current angle of the minimum torque ripple. Thus, the parametric study for optimal rotor design is performed by varying the thickness and the offset radius of the PMs according to current angle. In particular, a narrow bridge is required in conventional IPMSM for reducing flux leakage; however, the increase in cogging torque in the analysis model saturates the narrow bridge (large offset radius). Therefore, we suggest an appropriate shape considering limiting conditions such as DC link voltage, average torque, torque ripple, and cogging torque taking into account performance requirements.

  • This paper presents an implementation of direct torque control (DTC) of Reluctance Synchronous Motor (RSM) with an efficiency optimization. The equipment circuit in Reluctance Synchronous Motor which consider with iron losses is theoretically analyzed and the optimal current ration between torque current and exiting current analytically derived to drive RSM at maximum efficiency. For RSM, torque dynamics can be maintained even with controlling the flux level because a torque is directly proportional to the stator current unlike induction motor. The experimental results are presented to validate the applicability of the proposed method. The developed control system show high efficiency features with 1.0 Kw RSM having 2.57 ratio of d/q reluctance.

  • An ultrasonic motor of high torque with a new configuration for application in automobiles is proposed. The newly designed stator is a two sided vibrator consisting of a toothed metal disk with a piezoelectric ceramic ring bonded on both faces of the disk which generates a flexural traveling wave along the circumference of disk. In this configuration, the displacement on the surface of stator may not be confined. It also produces a large vibrating force and amplitude because the vibrator is sandwiched by two piezoelectric plates. It is possible to increase the torque by improving the vibration characteristics. To compute the vibration mode of the motor of diameter 48 mm, the finite element method was used. A 6th mode was chosen as the operation mode with a resonance frequency of about 64.4 kHz. According to this design and measured its performance, a prototype was fabricated. The performance measurement of the prototype motor showed that its stall torque was about 1.8 Nm and efficiency was 37% at 60% of the maximum torque.

  • This study was carried out to minimize the lifting force of a two hinge type stand mechanism. This unit is designed for the display devices in order to enhance the ergonomics for effective height adjustment and maintenance at any preferred position. The unit will be very useful for the mechanism fabricated with a coil spring and disc springs as a torque generator. The maximum and the minimum torque value should be calculated initially for the smooth lift. And the reasonable torque distribution is necessary to prevent any auto lift and auto dropping at any position because the torque generated by coil spring is more sensitive than disc spring in tilting the position. Therefore, the analysis of the coil spring is requisite to issue the specific torque value depending on the distorted angle with securing reliability of a long time storage condition. After the theoretical torque value was calculated, the evaluation was carried out by making a proto-type sample, then distorted angle was updated by experiment. The result of this study can readily be applied to various units for the optimization of the smooth lift.

  • Electric drive vehicles (EDV) have received much attention recently because of their environmental and energy benefits. In an EDV, the motor drive system directly influences the performance of the propulsion system. However, the available DC voltage is limited, which limits the maximum speed of the motors. At high speeds, the inverter voltage increases if the square wave (SW) voltage (six-step operation) is used. Although conventional direct torque control (DTC) has several advantages, it cannot work in the six-step mode required in high-speed applications. In this paper, a single-mode seamless DTC for AC motors is proposed. In this scheme, the trajectory of the reference flux changes continuously between circular and hexagonal paths. Therefore, the armature voltage changes smoothly from a high-frequency switching pattern to a square wave pattern without torque discontinuity. In addition, because multi-mode controllers are not used, implementation is more straightforward. Simulation results show the voltage pattern changes smoothly when the motor speed changes, and consequently, torque control without torque discontinuity is possible in the field weakening area even with a six-step voltage pattern.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the periodicity of shank-foot segment coupling and free torque before and after fatigue induced by prolonged running. Method: Fifteen young healthy male participants with a rear-foot strike ran on instrumented dual-belt treadmills at 70% of their maximum oxygen uptake for 65 min. Kinematic and ground reaction force data were collected for 20 continuous strides at 5 and 65 min (considered the fatigued condition). The approximate entropy tool was applied to assess the periodicity of the shank internal-external rotation, foot inversion-eversion, shank-foot segment coupling, and free torque for the two running conditions. Results: The periodicity of all studied parameters, except foot inversion-eversion, decreased after 65 min of running (fatigued condition) for 80% of the participants in this study. Furthermore, 60% of the participants showed similarities in the change of periodicity pattern in shank internal-external rotation, coupling, and free torque. Conclusion: The findings indicated that the foot inversion-eversion motion may pose a higher risk of injury than the shank internal-external rotation, coupling, and free torque in the fatigued condition during prolonged running.

  • This paper presents a fast switching direct torque control (FS-DTC) using only a single DC-link current sensor. In FS-DTC, six new active voltage complex space vectors (CSVs) are synthesized by the conventional active voltage space vectors (SVs). The corresponding sectors are rotated in the anticlockwise direction by 30 degrees. A selection table is defined to select the CSVs. Based on the "Different Phase Mode", the output sequence of the selected CSV is optimized. Accordingly, a reconstruction method is proposed to acquire the phase currents. The core of the FS-DTC is that all of the three phase currents can be reliably reconstructed during every two sampling periods, which is the result of the fast switching between different phases. The errors between the reconstructed and actual currents are strictly limited in one sampling period. The FS-DTC has the advantages of the standard DTC scheme such as simple structure, quick torque response and robustness. As can be seen in the analysis, the FS-DTC can be thought of as an equivalent standard DTC scheme with 86.6% of the maximum speed, 173.2% of the torque ripple, and 115% of the response time of the torque. Based on a dSPACE DS1103 controller, the FS-DTC is implemented in an induction machine drive system. The results verify the effectiveness of the FS-DTC.

  • This paper deals with optimum design criteria for maximum torque density & minimum torque ripple of Flux Switching Motor (FSM) using RSM & FEM. The focus of this paper is to find a design solution through the comparison of torque density and torque ripple according to rotor shape variations. And then, a central composite design(CCD) mixed resolution is introduced, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) is conducted to determine the significance of the fitted regression model.

  • In this paper, a wind power simulator is designed and implemented. To realize the torque of wind blade, a DC motor is used as a variable torque input device. An induction machine is used as a generator of which speed is controlled to maintain the optimal tip speed ratio during wind speed change. Input torque of system is controlled by armature current of DC motor and speed is controlled by generator control unit using field oriented control algorithm. Various control algorithms such as MPPT, soft start up, the simulator reactive power control, can be developed and tested using the simulator.
