  • In this study, a mathematical model was suggested to predict the maximum steering torque of a tractor on off-road. The model took into account the characteristics of soil, including the pressure-sinkage and the shearing characteristics as well as the primary design parameters of steering system of the tractor. The efficiency of the developed model was verified via comparison of the maximum steering torque predicted using the model with those measured from steering torque test. The results showed that the predicted maximum steering torques were in good agreement with the measured ones from the steering test on soft soil in which tractor is generally operated. Thus, we concluded that the model developed in this study could be used for prediction of maximum steering torque of a tractor.

  • The optimal shape modeling of core parts through 3D modeling and structural analysis for the development of small and medium-sized ships. The goal is to improve the efficient structure of the hydraulic system for controlling the rudder among the core steering parts in small and medium-sized ships. Through 3D modeling and structural analysis, a new concept of tiller parts and a double-acting hydraulic cylinder control system were proposed and operational structural stability was evaluated. Structural analysis of the three different tiller designs that can be replaceable onto existing fishing vessels was conducted to derive the final shapes. The emphasis was placed on evaluating the structural stability of the key drive components, the tiller, pin, and cylinder rodin the maximum torque condition of the hydraulic cylinder.

  • The back emf harmonics of a permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motor is a major source of torque ripple. For torque control applications including column fitted MDPS (motor driven power steering) systems, it is essential to reduce the mechanical vibrations due to torque ripples at low speeds. In this paper, a torque ripple reduction algorithm for interior PM synchronous motors is proposed. The harmonic currents that cancel the $6^{th}$ order torque harmonic are added to the nominal dq currents for MTPA (maximum torque per ampere) operation. The compensated harmonic currents are derived from flux linkage harmonics based on a FFT analysis of the back emf harmonics. Simulation and experimental results verify that the $6^{th}$ order torque harmonic and THD of the torque ripple are reduced by compensating the dq harmonic currents.

  • Ferrous powder metallurgy in Japan has developed in the last four decades, where every decade is featured by certain breakthroughs in materials. The progress in PM materials is closely related to newly developed powders. Low alloy steel powders for high strength PM components are grouped into three types: Ni and/or Mo containing completely alloyed powders, Ni containing partially alloyed powders, and Cr containing completely alloyed powders. Every type has its special characteristics. The tensile strength of PM materials is improved up to 2 GPa. The hardness is also increased to exceed 500 HV with normal hardening methods, and 700 HV with novel surface treatment techniques. The present maximum of fatigue strength is 550 MPa, and that of impact energy is 100 J. Novel PM materials with improved properties are applied to a variety of automobile and other components: power steering pumps, rocker anns, valve guides and inserts, bearings, torque sensors, etc. The future outlook for the ferrous PM is Quite positive, and the industry is expected to show renewed growth by applying many types of alloy steel powders and new ferrous PM materials.
