  • Surface alloying of Ti alloy by $CO_2$ laser is able to produce few hundred micrometers thick TiN or TiC surface-alloyed layer with high hardness on the substrate by injecting reaction gas($N_2$ or $CH_4$). Laser surface alloying by means of process control is in many applications essential in order to obtain predictable hardening layer. This research has been investigated the effect of such parameters on TiN and TiC gas alloying of Ti-6Al-4V alloy by $CO_2$ laser. The maximum surface hardness of TiN layer was obtained 1750Hv on the conditions of 0.8kW laser power, 0.8m/min scanning speed and 100% $N_2$ atmosphere. However, the maximum hardness of TiC formation layer after laser treatment was about 630Hv. As scanning speed was increased, the hardness and depth of these layers were decreased at constant laser power.

  • The effect of H2:N2 gas ratio on the case thickness hardness and nitrides formation in the sur-face of SCM440 machine structural steel have been studied by micro-pulse plasma process. The thickness of compound layer increased with the increase of nitrogen content in the gas com-position. The maximum thickness of compound layer the maximum case depth and the maximum surface hardness were about 15.8${\mu}m$, 400${\mu}m$ and Hv765 respectively in the nitriding condition of 250Pa and 70% nitrogen content at $520^{\circ}C$ for 7hrs. Generally only nitride phases such as ${\'{\gamma}}$($Fe_4N$)$\varepsilon(Fe_2}{_3N}$ phases were detected in compound and diffusion layer by XRD analysis. The amount of $\varepsilon(Fe_2}{_3N}$ phase increased with the increase of nitrogen content. The relative amounts and kind of phases formed in the nitrided case changed with the change of nitrogen content in the gas composition.

  • In this paper, the influence of several factors such as hardness, internal defect and non-propagating crack on fatigue limits was investigated with three kinds of ductile iron specimens. From the experimental results the fatigue limits were examined in relation with hardness and tensile strength in case of high strength specimens under austempering treatment; in consequence the marked improvement of fatigue limits were not showed. The maximum defect size was an important factor to predict and to evaluate the fatigue limits of ductile irons. And, the quantitative relationship between the fatigue limits$({\sigma}_w)$ and the maximum defect sizes $(\sqrt{area}_{max})$ was expressed as ${\sigma}_w^n{\cdot}{\sqrt{area}}_{max}=C_2$. Also, it was possible to explain the difference for the fatigue limits in three ductile irons by introduction of the non-propagating crack rates.

  • Experimental results for the laser shock peening of stainless steels, duplex stainless steel and STS304, for the enhancement of surface hardness are reported. A high power Nd:YAG laser (532 nm, 2nd harmonics) was used to irradiate the workpiece in water at the irradiances of 5, 10, $15\;GW/cm^2$. The surface of a workpiece was covered with Fe or Al foil for protection of the original surface and reduction of laser reflection. The laser pulse densities were varied from $25\;pulse/mm^2$ to $75\;pulse/mm^2$. In the case of the STS304, the surface hardness increased with increasing pulse density and the maximum increase of about 29% was achieved using Fe foil at $10\;GW/cm^2$ and $75\;pulse/mm^2$ conditions. The maximum increase in surface hardness of duplex stainless steel was about 8% at $10\;GW/cm^2$ and $75\;pulse/mm^2$ with also Fe foil. In the case of the Al foil, less increase of surface hardness was obtained, possibly due to the thermal expansion effect.

  • Effect of Notch Shape and Hardness Ratio on Characteristics of Impact Fracture in Dual Phase Steels. In this study, it is investigated the effect of notch shape and hardness ratio on the characteristics of impact fracture in dual phase steels. The impact test was carried out at the temperature range from -40.deg. C to room temperature with Instrumented Charpy Impact Tester. The main results obtained are as follows; 1, The maximum impact bending strength (.sigma.$_{max}$) increases with the tensile strength. Also, the impact energy depends on .sigma.$_{max}$. 2, In room temperature, the impact energy depends on crack-initiation energy (E$_{i}$) in case of the high hardness ratio (R=3.4), whereas depends on crack-propagation energy (E$_{p}$) in case of the low hardness ratio (R=1.8) and the dependence of crack-initiation energy of the impact characteristics decreases with increasing test temperature. These phenomena are result from the difficulty of cleavage facet formation.ion.ion.

  • This study describes a hydrogen embrittlement evaluation of the subsurface zone in 590DP steel by micro-Vickers hardness measurement. The 590DP steel was designed to use in high-strength thin steel sheets as automotive materials. The test specimens were fabricated to 5 series varying the chemical composition through the process of casting and rolling. Electrochemical hydrogen charging was conducted on each specimen with varying current densities and charging times. The relationship between the embrittlement and hydrogen charging conditions was established by investigating the metallography. The micro-Vickers hardness was measured to evaluate the hydrogen embrittlement of the subsurface zone in addition to the microscopic investigation. The micro-Vickers hardness increased with the charging time at the surface. However, the changing ratio and maximum variation of hardness with depth were nearly the same value for each test specimen under the current density of 150 mA/$cm^2$ and charging time of 50 hours. Consequently, it appears that hydrogen embrittlement in 590DP steel can be evaluated by micro-Vickers hardness measurement.

  • This study deals with the friction welding of A2024- T6 to A6061- T6; The friction time was variable conditions under the conditions of spindle revolution of 2000rpm, friction pressure of 50MPa, upset pressure of 100MPa, and upset time of 5.0seconds. Under these conditions, the microstructure of weld interface, tensile fracture surface and mechanical tests were studied, of friction weld, and so the results were as follows. 1. When the friction time was 1.5seconds under the conditions, the maximum tensile strength of the friction weld happened to be 292MPa, which is $94.2\%$ of the base material's tensile strength(310MPa). At the same condition, the maximum shear strength was 2l2MPa, which is equivalent to $103\%$ of the base material's shear strength (205MPa). 2. At the same condition, the maximum vickers hardness was Hv 146 at A2024- T6 nearby weld interface, which is higher Hv3 than condition of the friction time 0.5seconds, and the maximum vickers hardness was Hvl20 from weld interface of A6061-T6, which is higher Hv28 then base material's. 3. The results of microstructure analysis show that the structures of two base materials have fractionized and rearranged along a column due to heating and axial force during friction, which has affected in raising hardness and tensile strength.

  • In Mo-Xwt%Cu compound, Physical and thermal properties were systematically evaluated in terms of Cu contents and sintering temperature. Typically Cu contents were varied from 15 to 25wt% and also the Sintering temperatures were changed from $1115^{\circ}C$ to $1350^{\circ}C$. In physical properties, Mo-15~25wt%Cu has the maximum density of 95% while Mo-20wt%Cu has the maximum thermal conductivity of 165.179[${\mu}/m^{\circ}C$] at sintering temperature of $1300^{\circ}C$. Especially, Mo-25wt%Cu has the maximum hardness of 173.4 at sintering temperature of $1150^{\circ}C$ and the maximum thermal expansion of 9.0[W/mK] as the specimen heated in the range of temperature from $50^{\circ}C$ to $400^{\circ}C$. Based on electrical conductivity measurements, the relative density increased within creasing Cu contents and the values were in the range of 100~150[W/mK].

  • Texture is an important quality factor of processed chestnut products, which changes depending on the conditions of boiling process. The conventional boiling process consists of three stage(1st : 70 minutes at 60$^{\circ}C$; 2nd : 20minutes at 70$^{\circ}C$; 3rd : 80minutes at 98$^{\circ}C$). To improve the conventional boiling process of processed chestnut products, we investigated the changes of texture at different stages of boiling process and undertook the optimization of boiling process by response surface method on heating times of 2nd and 3rd heating, and amount of softening agent. The initial hardness and cohesiveness, the most important textural characteristics of chestnut, were 7.876kg and 0.189, respectively. In the third boiling stage, hardness decreased to 0.313kg and cohesiveness increased to 0.310. Using response surface method the minimum point of hardness and maximum point of cohesiveness was examined and model equations for predicting the changes of hardness and cohesiveness in the optional boiling condition were developed.

  • This study was carried out to find a useful method to predict hardness of tomato using optical spectrum data. Optical spectrum of reflectance and transmittance data were collected processed by 9 kind of preprocessing methods-normalizations of mean, maximum and range, SNV (standard normal variate), MSC (multiplicative scatter correction), the first derivative and second derivative of Savitzky-Golay and Norris-Gap. With the preprocessed and non-processed original spectrum data, prediction models of hardness of tomato were developed using analytical tools of PLS (partial least squares) and MLR (multiple linear regression) and tested for their validation. The test of validation resulted that the analytical tools of PLS and MLR output similar performances while the transmittance spectra showed much better result than the reflectance spectra.
