The purpose of this study was to statistically evaluate the spacing of primary dentition according to whether or not a space existed and measurement of amount of space in 205 children (male 114, female 91) from 2 to 6 years of age. The results were as follows; 1. In the incidence of interdental space on each region, spacing between the primary lateral incisors and primary canine in maxilla and between the primary canine and 1st primary molar in mandible showed the highest percentage, on the other hand, spacing between the 1st and 2nd primary molars in both jaw showed the lowest percentage. 2. In the kinds of interdental space, the state of primate space and other space together showed the highest percentage, and in the degree of spacing, $S_2$ showed the highest percentage in both jaw. 3. In the incidence of primate space, maxillary primate space showed higher percentage than mandibular primate space in bilateral case. 4. In the type of arch form, spaced arch showed higher percentage than closed arch and about the half of closed arch showed crowding. 5. In both Jaw, available space showed incisor segments, canine segments, and premolar segments in order of amount, and there were not statistically significant differences of sex or jaws in the amount of available space.

PURPOSE. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the accuracy of a new implant impression technique using bite impression coping and a dual arch tray. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two implant fixtures were placed on maxillary left second premolar and first molar area in dentoform model. The model with two fixtures was used as the reference. The impression was divided into 2 groups, n=10 each. In group 1, heavy/light body silicone impression was made with pick up impression copings and open tray. In group 2, putty/light body silicone impression was made with bite impression copings and dual arch tray. The reference model and the master casts with implant scan bodies were scanned by a laboratory scanner. Surface tessellation language (STL) datasets from test groups was superimposed with STL dataset of reference model using inspection software. The three-dimensional deviation between the reference model and impression models was calculated and illustrated as a color-map. Data was analyzed by independent samples T-test of variance at ${\alpha}=.05$. RESULTS. The mean 3D implant deviations of pick up impression group (group 1) and dual arch impression group (group 2) were 0.029 mm and 0.034 mm, respectively. The difference in 3D deviations between groups 1 and 2 was not statistically significant (P=.075). CONCLUSION. Within limitations of this study, the accuracy of implant impression using a bite impression coping and dual arch tray is comparable to that of conventional pick-up impression.
The present study purposed to prevent oral diseases and to improve oral health in children. For this purpose, we selected 70 cases who are 5~7 years old preschoolers at the kindergarten affiliated to G College in Gyeongsangbukdo, and analyzed the general patterns of oral care and the relation of the patterns with dental plaque and deciduous dental caries in the children. Specifically, we conducted oral examination and applied pit and fissure sealant according to the eruption of deciduous molar and first molar. In addition, we executed the 1st and 2nd tooth brushing instruction (TBI), and surveyed S-OHI and PHP twice. Excluding 14 preschoolers who did not appear in the 2nd survey, we performed the study with 56 preschoolers and drew conclusions as follows. 1. The number of decayed or missed or filled teeth among deciduous teeth was 3 or more in 42.9% of female children, and 46.4% of male children, so male children showed a slightly higher rate. 2. The degree of dental plaque formation was $1.64{\pm}1.22$ among the surveyed children. 3. The oral health index was lower after TBI than before in all the children (P<.001). 4. Change in the oral health index was particularly larger in 7 year old female children (p<.005). 5. The patient hygiene performance index was lower after TBI than before in both the buccal surface and lingual surface of the children (p<.005). 6. The patient hygiene performance index was lower after TBI than before in all of male children's teeth except the right maxillary first deciduous molar (p<.001).

This study was performed to evaluate the accuracy of orthopantomogram by measuring the actual and radiographic tooth length and by analyzing the vertical magnification rate. For this study, total 90 teeth of the maxilla and mandible teeth and a dry skull were used. This experiment was attached with metal balls of 1±0.02㎜ at the root and the crown cusp tips of central, 2nd premolar, 1st molar of the maxilla and mandible and the teeth were embedded in dry skull, and then orthopantomogram was taken. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The average of tooth length in orthopantomogram was longer than that of actual tooth length. 2. The average of vertical magnification rate in the orthopantomogram to actual tooth length was 17-26%. 3. Vertical magnification rate of the maxilla teeth was 18-26% and that of mandibular teeth was 17-23%, and the magnification of maxillary teeth was larger than that of mandible teeth(P<0.0l). 4. Vertical magnification rate of posterior area was 22-26% and that of anterior area was 17-18%, and the magnification of anterior area was less than that of posterior area(P<0.01).
The oral cavity is easily accessible for direct exposure of a malignant disease. 1 percent of the oral malignant tumors are of metastatic origin and approximately 10 percent to 25 percent of the 1 percent fraction originate from the lungs. A case of metastatic lung carcinoma to the gingiva in a 88-year-old male is reported. He complained of pain and swelling between right maxillary 1st premolar and 2nd molar. Although surgical excision of the lesion has been done, the gingival lesion developed as a quickly growing mass and recurred 2 weeks after surgical excision. The gingival mass was histopathologically diagnosed as an undifferentiated carcinoma. Epithelial layer was continuous without ulceration and it seems that the cancer cells are originated from primary tumor. Infiltrated cancer cells were pleomorphic and dyskeratotic. The cells had 2 or more nuclei, not showing squamous or glandular differentiation. Immunohistochemical study revealed the cells originated from the epithelial cells. The prognosis is poor, because prognosis depends on surgical elimination of the primary tumor.
It is well known that implants showing no clinical mobility are successfully osseointegrated and have good prognosis. When implants are under load, their mobility begins to increase. It is of necessity to substantiate whether excessive load is on or premature occlusal force is acting prior to desirable osseointegration. Using Periotest unit, we could measure the pattern of mobility change. Consequently, osseointegrated treatment has come to success by intercepting progressive mobility and doing perceptive treatment according to the result of Periotest Value(PTV). In this study, we took records of intangible mobility of 70 osseointegrated implants. And we also measured the mobility of periodontally sound natural teeth as a standard from 30 dental personnel. Conclusions were summarized as followings ; 1. Lower lateral incisor has the highest PTV, whereas lower canine, upper canine, lower premolars and lower 1st molar have the lowest PTV in natural dentition. 2. There are little significant statistical difference of PTV between men and women in both(natural and implant) dentition. 3. In general, lower natural teeth show lower PTV than upper counterpart. 4. Mandibular implants have lower PTV than those of maxillary implants. 5. All of the successfully osseointegrated implants have lower PTV than those of periodontally healthy teeth.
This study was accomplished for appreciation of the mandibular moments according to antero- posterior movement of pivot placed on the lower natural dentition. For this study, 20 subjects(male, $21\sim30$ yrs., average age 24) in the category of normal occlusion were selected, and the intraoral Vitallium clutches were cast and fabricated for each subjects. A 2-dimension PSD(Position Sensitive Detector, Hamamatsu Photonics Co., Japan) was attached to maxillary clutch in a mode of three dimensional control and LED (Light Emit Diode, Hamamatsu Photonics Co., Japan) was set up on mandibular clutch. Both clutches were set into oral cavity of each subjects and adjusted. Then the subjects were allowed to intercuspated with maximal bite force while the pivoting ball in the mid-line moving from anterior toward posterior position. The displacement scales were recorded by CCD camera(Sony, CCD-TR-705) and VCR, The conclusions were as follows : 1. When the subject was allowed to bite the metal pivoting ball in the midline of lower dentition with maximal bite force voluntarily while moving from lower central incisor to canine, 1st premolar, End premolar, 1st molar and 2nd molar. The lever actions on the pivot were revealed in all subjects. The equilibrium of moment were revealed on the pivots of 1st premolar(14 subjects), End premolar(4 subjects), and canine(2 subjects) areas. 2. The changes of loading on the TMJ according to antero-posterior positional changes of metal pivoting ball were able to recognize as follow. Compression on the TMJ was increased when the pivot moves anteriorly from the equilibrium point, and tension on the TMJ was increased when posteriorly. 3. 13 subjects were recognized their habitual chewing sides(Rights, Left8), and 7 subjects were not. During maximal biting, mandible was displaced toward their habitual chewing sides on the metal pivoting ball in the frontal plane. 4. In cephalometric analysis, the average genial angle of 20 subjects was $116.75^{\circ}$ and the average mandibular body length was 79.77mm. The equilibrium points of mandibular moment were positioned more posteriorly in the subjects having larger Genial angle than in the smaller(p<0.05). Relationships among the angle between FH plane and occlusal plane, the angle between occlusal plane and mandibular plane , and mandibular body length were not significant(p>0.05).
In the orthopedic therapy, the biomechanical analysis of the appliance is necessary to get a desirable orthopedic effect. The purpose of this study was to investigate the desirable direction and application position of the protraction force. The protraction force of 500g was applied to the first premolar or to the first molar. The direction of force application was paralell or $20^{\circ}$ downward to the occlusal plane respectively. The stress distribution and the displacement within the maxilla was analyzed by a 3-dimensional finite element method. The findings obtained were as follows 1. Protraction forces caused a counterclockwise rotation of the maxilla. 2. The degree of maxillary rotation was less when the force was applied $20^{\circ}$ downward direction to the occlusal plane than when applied to the parallel direction. 3. The degree of rotation of maxilla was greater when the parallel force was applied to the 1st premolar than when applied to the first molar, whereas it was greater when force is applied $20^{\circ}$ downward than at the first premolar. In conclusion, the $20^{\circ}$ downward protraction from the first premolar induced the least counterclockwise rotation of the maxilla and was thought as the desirable direction and application position of the protraction force.
Calcium hydroxide pastes is widely used in conventional endodontics. Along with the expanded clinical use of calcium hydroxide, literatures suggest mixing calcium hydroxide with other substance. Among added substances the vehicle plays the most importance role in the overall process because it is directly related with the velocity of ionic dissociation of $Ca^{2+}$ and OH ion. In this study, we evalutated and compared periapical tissue response and root resorption after canal was filled with mixture of saline and calcium hydroxide(Junsei Chemical Co.. Japan) as a aqueous vehicle, Metapaste(Meta Co., Korea) as a viscous vehicle paste, Vitapex(Neo Dental, Japan) as a oily vehicle paste and IRM(Caulk Dentsply, USA) in replantation of rat molar. A total of 31 maxillary first molars of Sprague-Dawley female rats, 30 days old were used. The upper 1st molar was extracted and the mesiobuccal canal was filled with mixture of saline and calcium hydroxide, Metapaste, Vitapex. IRM and then replanted. Rats were sacrificed 3 weeks after replantation. the maxillae were removed. section of 4 micron were cut and stained with hematoxylin-eosin, Apical tissue response were observed under light microscope. The results were as follows: 1. Saline mixing group and Metapaste group were significant different in fibrous capsule width compared to Vitapex group and IRM group(P<0.05). 2. Saline mixing group. Metapaste group. Vitapex group and IRM group did not prevent root resorption and there were no statistical difference. 3. In saline mixing group and Metapaste group. loss of pastes were observed in all samples. From the results of our study. we observed loss of pastes in saline mixing group and Metapaste group because of water soluble property and assumed it was related to inflammation in apical area and sealing ability of material. So, we should study and develop calcium hydroxide vehicle which is easily removed and more stable and because of only 3 weeks observation we need more evaluation in long period.
The purpose of this study was to determine the proliferative activity of the osteoblasts and fibroblasts in the midpalatal area and to investigate the adjacent periodontal tissues of individual tooth following rapid expansion of the palate. Ten young adult dogs, aged approximately ten months, were used in the experiment. The experimental design was consisted of 1 week expansion group(Group E1, 3 dogs), 2 week expansion group(Group E2, 3 dogs), 2 week expansion and 2 week retention group(Group E3, 3 dogs), and control group(Group C, 1 dog). For each group, expansion screw was activated one time per day(1/4 turn;$90^{\circ}$) following Hyrax-screw application. The experimental animals in each group were sacrificed at 1, 2 and 4 weeks following palatal expansion. Maxillary tissue blocks were obtained and prepared ior the histomorphologic and immunohistochemical studies. Light mcroscope, polarizing microscope, and soft X-ray apparatus were used in this study, and following results were obtained. 1. In polarizing microscopic study, the expansion groups(E1 & E2) showed blue color representing bone resorption and new bone formation in midpalatal suture area. E3 groups skewed less blue color compared to the E1 and E2 group. But yellow color increased by calcification in the E3 groups. 2. Immunohistochemical study revealed that positive responses of the osteoblasts to PCNA and undifferentiated fibroblasts to EGF in E1 group were somewhat increased. Positive response to PCNA and EGF were increased in fibroblasts and the osteoblasts forming new bone in E2 group. In E3 group, the positive response cell concentrated the periphery of edge of palatal process in both PCNA and EGF. 3. Throughout the expansion period(E1 & E2), light microscopic study showed the edges of the extensive resorption and new palatal processes, indicating bone remodeling within the suture. E3 group exhibited less remodeling of midpalatal suture area. E2 group and E3 group showed cementum formation and resorption at the apex of 3rd premolar and 1st molar E3 group exhibited extensive hyalinized zone on the cervical portion of buccal side of 1st molar. 4. Soft X-ray analysis of E1 group showed hypomineralized defect and microfractures in various parts of the suture areas when compared with control animals. There was no significant difference in the degree of mineralization in the midpalatal suture region between the C and E3 groups. Tooth axis showed tipping of 3rd premolar and 1st molar in the E2 group and E3 group. Based upon these experimental results, it is concluded that the undifferentiated mesenchymal cells always presented in midpalatal suture area following RPE. Differentiated osteoblasts and fibroblasts possess proliferating cellular activity until the 2 week retention period. The posterior teeth are tend to tip buccally as RPE force applied. Retention group exhibited irreversible response with severe hyalinized zone on the buccal surface of the first molar.
