  • To determine the optimum harvest time of recent rice varieties from Indica/Japonica remote crosses, leading varieties Suweon 264 and Milyang 23 were tested for the changes in dry matter weight and moisture content of grain, shattering, shelling ratio, milling ratio, and apparant physical quality during grain development at 5 day-intervals from 20 days to 55 days after heading. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Grain weight (dry matter) reached its maximum (physiological maturity) at 30 days after flowering (DAF) in Suweon 264, and at 35 days in Milyang 23, and thereafter it did not change significantly until 55 DAF. 2. Time course of decrease in grain moisture content (Y, %) during maturation (X, DAF) consisted of two linear phases, i.e. a fast and a slow period: Y=68.245-1.33X until 34DAF, and Y=23.025-0.470X until 55DAF after 34DAF in Suweon 264; Y=73.62-1.634X until 24.5DAF, and Y=33.59-0.570X until 55DAF after 24.5DAF in Milyang 23. Two varieties showed the same grain moisture content of 28% (wet basis) at physiological maturity in spite of the distinct differences in the heading date, time of physiological maturity and thereby ripening climate. 3. Force to shatter a grain ranged about 90 to 100g in Milyang 23, and about 200 to 250g in Suweon 264 and in a Japonica variety, Jinheung. The force, however, did not change significantly with harvest time from 35DAF to 50DAF. 4. The changes in the ratios of shelling, milling, broken rice and tinted rice with harvest time were insignificant during a period from 35DAF to 55DAF. However, ratios of green rice and white belly rice decreased significantly with delay in harvest time during 10 days after physiological maturity. 5. The best time of harvest for maximum yield and good quality is thought to be 10 days after physiological maturity, and grain moisture content at this time was about 20% on wet basis.

  • We investigated the gametogenic cycle and spawning seasons of the male Chlamys (Azumapecten) farreri nipponensis by qualitative and quantitative analyses, and also the size at 50% of group sexual maturity was calculated by the data of first sexual maturity. In this study, the male gametogenic cycle of this species by qualitative analysis was divided into five successive stages: early active stage (January to March), late active stage (March to April), ripe stage (April to August), partially spawned stage (July to September), and spent/inactive stage (August to January). The male gametogenic cycle showed similar patterns with monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index and condition index. Particularly, spawning in male scallop occurred once a year from July to September, unlike the spawning period of this species (from June to August) reported by the previous researchers. In quantitative statistical analysis using an image analyzer system, the patterns of monthly changes in the percent (%) of the areas occupied by spermatogenic stages to the testis areas in males showed a maximum in June, and then sharply dropped from July to September, 2006. From these data, it is apparent that the spawning season of C. (A.) farreri nipponensis occurred once per year from July to early September, indicating a unimodal gametogenic cycle during the year. Shell heights at 50% of group sexual maturity (RM50) fitted to an exponential equation were estimated to be 49.90 mm in males (considered to be one year old), and it was 100% for male scallops over 61.0 mm (considered to be two years old).

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the maturity stages of venture firms through classification analysis, which is widely used as a big data technique. Venture companies should develop a competitive advantage in the market. And the maturity stage of a company can be classified into five stages. I will analyze a difference in the growth stage of venture firms between the survey response and the statistical classification methods. The firm growth level distinguished five stages and was divided into the period of start-up and declines. A classification method of big data uses popularly k-mean cluster analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis, artificial neural network, and decision tree analysis. I used variables that asset increase, capital increase, sales increase, operating profit increase, R&D investment increase, operation period and retirement number. The research results, each big data analysis technique showed a large difference of samples sized in the group. In particular, the decision tree and neural networks' methods were classified as three groups rather than five groups. The groups size of all classification analysis was all different by the big data analysis methods. Furthermore, according to the variables' selection and the sample size may be dissimilar results. Also, each classed group showed a number of competitive differences. The research implication is that an analysts need to interpret statistics through management theory in order to interpret classification of big data results correctly. In addition, the choice of classification analysis should be determined by considering not only management theory but also practical experience. Finally, the growth of venture firms needs to be examined by time-series analysis and closely monitored by individual firms. And, future research will need to include significant variables of the company's maturity stages.

  • The Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus niphonius is an economically important fish species in the southwestern waters of Korea. This study aimed to provide insights into the reproductive biology of this species in the southwestern waters of Korea. We analyzed monthly changes in fork length (FL), maturity stages, and gonadosomatic index (GSI). Moreover, we measured the in FL at sexual group maturity of 50%, 75%, 97.5%, and sex ratio (female vs. male). The overall sex ratio of female and male was 1:0.8. GSI value showed the highest peak in May; however, the spawning period revealed by the microscopic analysis of gonad tissue of S. niphonius was from April to August 2020. The main spawning seasons for the entire populations was from May to June. The fork length at 50% group maturity was 53.3 cm for females and 53.1 cm for males. These results of spawning period of Spanish mackerel highlight the influences of water temperatures that were higher than those in the past, an increase in resource levels, and the level of Pacific anchovy resources flowing into the spawning ground.

  • We studied the maturity and spawning of Marbled sole Pleuronectes yokohamae from May 2006 to April 2007 in the Southern Sea of Korea. We analyzed monthly changes in maturity stages, gonadosomatic index (GSI), egg diameters, fecundity (F), total length (TL) at 50% group maturity, and sex ratio. The spawning period was November to February, and the main spawning period was December to January. The fecundity ranged from 75,155 eggs at 17.8 cm(TL) to 1,307,195 eggs at 36 cm (TL), and the relationship between TL and F was $F=3.656TL^{3.518}$ ($R^2$=0.872). The TL at first maturity was 17.8 cm and at 100% maturity, 32 cm. Thus, TL at 50% group maturity was estimated to be 19.8 cm. For sex ratio by length class, males were slightly predominant at sizes under 25 cm TL, but females were 100% at greater than 32 cm TL.

  • The maturity and spawning of brown sole, Pleuronectes herzensteini were investigated using samples randomly collected in the East Sea of Korea from April, 2003 to March, 2004. We analyzed monthly changes in maturity stages, gonadosomatic index (GSI), egg diameter, fecundity (F), total length (TL) at 50% group maturity, and sex ratio. The spawning period was February to May, and the main spawning period was March to April. The fecundity was 38,702 eggs at 22 cm (TL) to 133,085 eggs at 37 cm (TL), and the relationship between TL and F was $F=11.307TL^{2.628}$. The TL at first maturity was 15 cm and at 100% maturity, 21 cm. Thus, TL at 50% group maturity was estimated to be 17.8 cm, which corrensponded to the age of 3 years. The sex ratio was 60.2 for female and 39.8 for male, where the female population was seen to be slightly predominant.

  • This study was conducted to increase the utility and productivity of forage crops at high altitued areas. For that purpose, 21 cultivars of corn and 2 cultivars of rye were cultivated for 3 years using a randomized block designed with 3 replications. The results obtained were as follows. 1. In the Taekwallyong area (800m above sea level) which has a short frostless period, all the seeding and harvest of corn must be finished within about 135 days between mid May, the time of the last frost, and late September, the time of the first frost 2. It was relatively safe for the early maturity cultivar(ll0days) and the medium maturity cultivar(l20days), compared to the late maturity cultivar(l30days) which might have had the possibility of an overlapping period between the time of harvest and the first frost in high altitude areas 3. The productivity of forage corn, which is the most efficient crop for capturing solar energy, varied significantly with the climate circumstances but the productivity of Taekwallyong showed similar results of 19 M/T/ha, compared with 20 M/T/ha in Suwon from the '96-'98 study 4. Rye could be cultivated in high altitude areas and when corn was raised as a second crop after rye in the same year, it was possible to increase the productivity of dry matter yield by 20% through double cropping(P < 0.05). • Investigations were made on population biology of Pampus echinogaster (Basilewsky, 1855) in the coastal areas of Korea, Yellow Sea, between August 2005 and July 2006. Population structure was not significantly different between male and females. Monthly variation of gonadosomatic index (GSI) of both sexes defined spawning period extending from March through July. A similar pattern was also observed in change at maturity stages. For males and females GSI was positively correlated with hepatosomatic index (HSI). Fecundity, ranging from 41,250 to 103,610 eggs, was related to body size, indicating that body size is the useful determinant of fecundity. The sexual maturity ($L_{50}$) was estimated as 14.98 cm TL for males and 19.32 cm TL for females. Parameters of growth estimated by the modified von Bertalanffy growth function model showed that the values of $L_{\infty}$ and K for combined data were 39.12 cm TL and 0.65 $yr^{-1}$. The growth performance index of this study (2.75) was higher than that of the previous study (2.45). This difference could be attributed to sampling method. The recruitment patterns indicated one normally distributed group. Percentage of the recruitment was 51.04% in the spawning season and the highest in August (19.78%).
