신갈나무 숲의 營養監類 循環 (Nutrienr cyclings in mongolian oak(quercus mongolica) forest)

  • To elucidate nutrient cyclings such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in mongolian oak(quercus mongolica) forest, nutrient elements of precipitation, throughfall, outflow, soil, various plant organ and litter were determined at mt.nambyeongsan, pyeongchang-gun, gangwon province in central part of korean peninsula. Annual precipitation input, throughfall and outflow of nutrientswere 10.3, 8.6 and 4.2 kg/ha for the N, 0.11, 0.24 and 0.02 kg/ha for the Pand 1.3, 10.9 and 1.2 kg/ha for the K, respectively. Inseasonal changes of nutrient concentrations, N, P and Kconcentrations which were rich in young leaves decreased steadily until autumn and decreased abruptly during autumnal yellowing. The standing N, P and K concent were 565, 37 and 257 kg/ha for standing phytomass of overstory, 33, 3 and 18 kg/ha for understory, 132, 3.6 and 14 kg/ha for litter on ground including deadwood and 20, 752, 14 and 420 kg/ha for the soil, respectively. The amounts of annual uptake, reture and retain were 174.2, 57.2, 117.2 kg/ha for the N, 9.9, 3.5, 6.4 kg/ha for the P and 73.2, 30.3, 42.9 kg/ha for the K, respectively. Reabsorption efficiency, ratio of the nutrient amount reabsorbed into woody organs to that in the mature leaves before shedding, was 71%(or 99.8 kg/ha in the amount), 69%(or 5.1 kg/ha) and 57%(or 33.1% kg/ha) and recycling coeffciently made with which the large amount of nutrients is absorbed through roots during growing season(UPTAKE) and reasorbed from the leaves before shedding(RETAIN) but the small amount of nutrients is returned through litterfall(RETURN).

First Description of Coleosporium plectranthi Causing Perilla Rust in Korea

  • Perilla rust is a damaging disease in perilla cultivation in Korea. Its causal agent was identified as Coleosporium plectranthi based on descriptions of morphological characteristics of spores and spore-producing fruiting structures(in uredinial and telial stages from perilla and in aecial stage from the alternate host pine) collected in 15 locations in Korea during the disease survey from 2004 to 2006. These characteristics were yellow or orange uredinium; globose or ellipsoid urediniospore of $20.8{\mu}m{\times}18{\mu}m$ in size; verruca of $0.3mm{\times}1.2mm$; orange telium; one-celled, oblong ellipsoid teliospore of $63.1{\mu}m{\times}19.7{\mu}m$ with one-layered crusts or four-celled(when mature), internal basidium of $64.2{\mu}m{\times}19.7{\mu}m$; ellipsoid to globoid basidiospore of $20.3{\mu}m{\times}12{\mu}m$; type 2 spermogonium; yellow, broadly ellipsoid peridial cell of $35.6{\mu}m{\times}23.1{\mu}m$; and broadly ellipsoidal or subglobose aeciospore of $25.9{\mu}m{\times}18.8{\mu}m$. Phylogenetic analysis of 28S rDNA sequences revealed the closest relatedness to those of the genus Coleosporium, a monophyletic group distinguished from other rust fungi and divided into two main lineages, one of which was C. plectranthi grouped with high bootstrap value(96%). In pathogenicity test, both aeciospores and urediniospores caused rust development on perilla leaves. This is the first description of C. plectranthi causing perilla rust with the first findings of its telial stage on perilla and the first rust disease on the aecial host in Pinus densiflora. These aspects would provide basic information for the development of control measures of the disease.

Assessment of different pretreatments to breakage dormancy and improve the seed germination in Elaeocarpus serratus L. - an underutilized multipurpose fruit tree from South India

  • The seeds of Elaeocarpus serratus, a tropical underutilized fruit tree are characterized by hard seed coat and consequent poor water uptake and low germination. To improve the regeneration through seeds, various parameters such as viability of seeds, water uptake, and effect of seed mass on germination and pretreatments were performed using a completely randomized design (CRD). Tetrazolium (TZ) test was conducted using fresh, mature seeds revealed $50{\pm}2.56%$ mean viability. Seeds of different weight classes showed similar pattern of water uptake and the saturation level was achieved at 60 hrs of soaking. Seeds belong to weight class 2.6-3.5g were germinated ($12.5{\pm}1.26%$) with $175{\pm}1.75days$ (d) of mean time taken for germination (MTG). Germination capacity of seeds varied significantly among different populations and Varkala population gave $12.5{\pm}1.1%$ germination with $174.6{\pm}2.5d$ MTG. Among various seed treatments, mechanical scarification was superior in germination and significant reduction in MTG ($p{\leq}0.05$). The mechanical scarification by complete removal of seed coat resulted in $49.2{\pm}1.52%$ germination within a short period of time ($9.52{\pm}0.89d$ MTG). However, the complete removal of seed coat without damaging to embryo is a difficult task. An alternate treatment (Mechanical scarification II) by making cracks on nut faces vertically followed by soaking in distilled water for 24 hrs gave $48.4{\pm}1.73%$ germination with significantly reduced MTG ($12.14{\pm}0.56d$) over unsoaked, untreated control ($6.5{\pm}1.84%$ germination and $197.18{\pm}1.79d$ MTG; $p{\leq}0.05$). This treatment (Mechanical scarification II) is therefore recommended for E. serratus seeds as it can adopt easily and can achieve 7 fold increases in germination over control. The recorded germination through mechanical scarification is in tune with realized viability percentage of the seeds.

Distribution and synchronized massive flowering of Sasa borealis in the forests of Korean National Parks

  • Background: Genus Sasa, dwarf bamboos, are considered to be species that lower biodiversity in the temperate forests of East Asia. Although they have a long interval, they, the monocarpic species, have a unique characteristic of large-scale synchronized flowering. Therefore, once they have flowered and then declined, it may be an opportunity for suppressed surrounding species. A previous study reported that Sasa borealis showed specialized flowering nationwide with a peak in 2015. However, this was based on data from a social network service and field survey at Mt. Jeombong. Therefore, we investigated S. borealis in the forests of five national parks in order to determine whether this rare synchronized flowering occurred nationwide, as well as its spatial distribution. Results: We found a total of 436 patches under the closed canopy of Quercus mongolica-dominated deciduous forests in the surveyed transects from the five national parks. Of these patches, 75% occupied a whole slope area, resulting in an enormous area. The patch area tended to be larger in the southern parks. Half (219 patches) of the patches flowered massively. Among them, 76% bloomed in 2015, which was consistent with the results of the previous report. The flowering rate varied from park to park with that of Mt. Seorak being the highest. The culms of the flowering patches were significantly taller (F = 93.640, p < 0.000) and thicker (F = 61.172, p < 0.000). Following the event, the culms of the flowering patches declined, providing a good opportunity for the suppressed plant species. The concurrent massive flowering of the mature patches was believed to be triggered by some stress such as a spring drought. Conclusion: We confirmed that the rare synchronized flowering of S. borealis occurred with a peak in 2015 nationwide. In addition, we explored that S. borealis not only monopolized an enormous area, but also dominated the floors of the late-successional Q. mongolica-dominated deciduous forests. This presents a major problem for Korean forests. As it declined simultaneously after flowering, there are both possibilities of forest regeneration or resettlement of S. borealis by massively produced seeds.

Small-scale spatial genetic structure of Asarum sieboldii metapopulation in a valley

  • Background: Asarum sieboldii Miq., a species of forest understory vegetation, is an herbaceous perennial belonging to the family Aristolochiaceae. The metapopulation of A. sieboldii is distributed sparsely and has a short seed dispersal distance by ants as their seed distributor. It is known that many flowers of A. sieboldii depend on self-fertilization. Because these characteristics can affect negatively in genetic structure, investigating habitat structure and assessment of genetic structure is needed. A total of 27 individuals in a valley were sampled for measuring genetic diversity, genetic distance, and genetic differentiation by RAPDPCR. Results: The habitat areas of A. sieboldii metapopulation were relatively small (3.78~33.60 m2) and population density was very low (five to seven individuals in 20×20 m quadrat). The habitat of A. sieboldii was a very shady (relative light intensity = 0.9%) and mature forest with a high evenness value (J = 0.81~0.99) and a low dominance value (D = 0.19~0.28). The total genetic diversity of A. sieboldii was quite high (h = 0.338, I = 0.506). A total of 33 band loci were observed in five selected primers, and 31 band loci (94%) were polymorphic. However, genetic differentiation along the valley was highly progressed (Gst = 0.548, Nm = 0.412). The average genetic distance between subpopulations was 0.387. The results of AMOVA showed 52.77% of variance occurs among populations, which is evidence of population structuring. Conclusions: It is expected that a small-scale founder effect had occurred, an individual spread far from the original subpopulation formed a new subpopulation. However, geographical distance between individuals would have been far and genetic flow occurred only within each subpopulation because of the low density of population. This made significant genetic distance between the original and new population by distance. Although genetic diversity of A. sieboldii metapopulation is not as low as concerned, the subpopulation of A. sieboldii can disappear by stochastic events due to small subpopulation size and low density of population. To prevent genetic isolation and to enhance the stable population size, conservative efforts such as increasing the size of each subpopulation or the connection between subpopulations are needed.

독일 너도밤나무(Fagus sylvatica L.) 숲 틈새에서의 갱신생태학적 연구 (Ecological Study of Regenerations in Experimental Canopy Gaps of a Fagus Sylvatica Forest in Germany)

  • 본 연구는 독일 졸링(selling)지역의 산성화된 너도밤나무 임분에 군상벌채(group cutting. 지름 약 30m)를 통한 임관틈새를 조성하여 고회석분말 시비를 수행하고, 이러한 미세 입지환경적 요소의 변화와 너도밤나무 갱신치수의 발달과 성장 그리고 지피식생 및 근균의 동태를 파악하고, 이를 토대로 합리적인 천연갱신 방법과 건실한 산림생태계관리지침의 기초자료를 제공할 목적으로 수행되었다 본 연구의 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째 산성화가 심화된 너도밤나무(Fagus sylvatica) 임분에서의 고회석분말시비는 토양의 화학성을 크게 개선시켰으며 지피식생의 현저한 발달을 가져왔다. 둘째, 산성화된 너도밤나무 임분에서의 갱신치수의 발달 및 성장은 매우 결핍하였고 특히 측근의 발달이 억제되었다. 셋째, 엽성분분석에서 시비구는 대조구에 비해 칼슘(Ca), 마그네슘(Mg)의 함량이 높게 나타난 반면에 망간(Mn)함량은 상대적으로 낮게 나타났으며, 칼륨(K)과 칼슘(Ca), 마그네슘(Mg)사이에 상호 길항작용이 확인되었다. 넷째, 너도밤나무 치수에서의 상대근균 빈도(RM)는 임관틈새 중앙부에 비해 남가장자리에서 월등히 높게 나타났고, 시비로 인해 Laccaria amethystina의 확장세가 뚜렷하게 나타났다. 이러한 결과에서 너도밤나무의 천연갱신 작업법으로 치수의 밀도 및 발달을 위해 산벌갱신작업법이 더 효과적일 것으로 판단되며, 대기오염으로 인하여 산성화가 심화되는 숲은 석회시비를 통해 건실한 산림생태계의 복원이 필요하다고 판단된다.

  • 본(本) 연구(硏究)는 임분(林分)의 직경(直徑) 분포(分布) 및 수고(樹高) 분포(分布)에서는 태벌구조(擇伐構造)의 가능성(可能性)을 시사(示唆)하고 있으나 경급별(徑級別) 재적(材積) 분포(分布)에서는 택벌(擇伐)에 이르지 못한 미성숙(未成熟) 구조(構造)를 보여 갱신과정(更新過程)에 있는 것으로 판단(判斷)되는 강원도(江原道) 인제군 기린면 진동리 고재(所在) 천연(天然) 횬효임분(混淆林分)을 대상(對象)으로 이 임분(林分)의 직경(直徑) 및 재적(材積) 생장율(生長率)의 파악(把握)을 통하여 미래(未來) 임분(林分) 구조(構造)의 변화(變化)를 예측(豫測) 함으로서 이 임분(林分)에 대한 택벌작업종(擇伐作業種)의 가능성(可能性)을 점검(點檢)하였다. 매 1년(年) 단위(單位)로 생장율(生長率)을 이용(利用)한 앞으로 30년간(年間)의 임분(林分) 구조(構造)의 예측(豫測)에 의하면 30년후(年後)에 목표직경(目標直徑) 40cm 이상(以上)에서의 본수(本數)와 ha 당(當) 재적(材積), 그리고 매년(每年) 수확(收穫)이 가능(可能)한 대경목(大徑木) 재적(材積)을 충분(充分)히 보유(保有)할 것으로 예측(豫測)되어 택벌목(擇伐木)으로 경영(經營)할 수 있을 것으로 판단(判斷)되었다. 그러나 균형상태(均衡狀態)에 있는 이상적(理想的)인 택벌목(擇伐木)의 대(大), 중(中), 소경목(小徑木)의 경급별(徑級別) 본수(本數) 비율(比率)인 1 : 2 : 7과 재적(材積) 비율(比率)인 5 : 3 : 2를 유지(維持)하지는 못하고 있는데 이는 앞으로 적합(適合)한 조림(造林) 조치(措置)를 통한 조절(調節)이 가능(可能)할 것으로 보인다.

참나무시들음병 훈증목의 강도 성능 평가 (Evaluation of Strength Performance of the Fumigation Treated Wood Affected by the Oak Wilt Disease)

  • 참나무시들음병 고사목으로부터 피해확산을 막기위해 주로 훈증처리 방법을 이용한다. 훈증처리에 따른 신갈나무 피해목의 강도적 활용 가능성을 검증하기 위해 훈증처리목재의 압축성능과 휨성능평가를 수행하였다. 훈증처리목재는 약 9개월 간 네마섹트(Metam-sodium)로 훈증처리하였다. 참나무시들음병 훈증처리목재의 기건 종압축강도는 58.87 MPa, 압축탄성계수는 5.66 GPa로 측정되었으며 건전목과 비슷한 경향을 보였다. 혼증목의 성숙재부 강도성능은 미성숙재부보다 16% 더 높은 강도값을 보였다. 참나무 건전목의 압축파괴형상은 다양한 형상으로 나타나지만 훈증처리목재의 경우 대부분 전단형 파괴형상을 보였다. 훈증처리목재의 휨강도는 157.43 MPa로 건전재보다 8% 높게 측정되었고 휨 탄성계수는 16.38 GPa로 건전재보다 16% 낮게 측정되었다. 그러나 훈증처리목재의 휨강도성능치에 대한 변동계수는 건전목보다 낮은 것을 확인하였다.

  • 본(本) 연구(硏究)는 우리나라에 인공식재(人工植栽)된 몇몇 지역(地域)의 리기테다소나무림(林)에 자생(自生)하는 몇가지 균근균(菌根菌)을 분리(分離) 동정(同定)하고, 도입(導入) 균근균(菌根菌)인 Pt균(菌)과 분리된 자생(自生) 균근균(菌根菌) Ra균(菌), Rb균(菌), Sp균(菌) 등(等)의 접종에 의해 리기테다소나무묘(苗)에 형성(形成)된 균근(菌根)의 해부학적(解剖學的)인 형태(形態)를 조사(調査)하였던 바 다음과 같은 결과(結果)를 얻었다. 1. 분리(分離) 동정(同定)된 Rhizopogon rubescens, Rhizopogon sp., Suillus pictus균(菌)과 도입종(導入種)인 Pisolithus tinctorius균(菌) 등(等)을 리기테다소나무묘(苗)의 근부(根部)에 인공접종(人工接種)한 결과(結果) 균근(菌根)을 형성(形成)하였다. 2. 균근(菌根)이 형성(形成)된 뿌리는 균사(菌絲)가 뿌리 표면(表面)을 감싸고 있으며 Hartig net와 균투(菌套)가 발달(發達)하였다. 또한 Hartig net의 발달(發達)로 인(因)하여 세포간극(細胞間隙)이 두꺼워졌다. 3. 균근(菌根)의 세포에서는 비균근(非菌根)의 세포(細胞)에서보다 액포의 크기는 작았고, 세포질(細胞質)의 양(量)은 많았다. 그러나 핵(核)의 크기에는 큰 차이(差異)가 없었다.

생장지역에 따른 소나무 형성층 활동의 계절적 변화 (Seasonal Change of Cambium Activity of Pine Trees at Different Growth Sites)

  • 동일 수종이라도 생장지역과 영급에 따라 수형 또는 재질의 차이가 존재하고, 이러한 차이는 형성층 활동에 따른 목부세포의 양과 질이 다르기 때문에 생기게 된다. 본 연구는 소광리와 안면도에서 자라는 소나무를 대상으로 형성층 활동의 계절적 변화를 조사하여 소나무 목재의 재질 차이를 분석하기 위한 기초자료를 마련하기 위해 수행하였다. 형성층 활동 분석 결과, 소광리 5영급 임분은 목재세포 분열을 4월 중순에 시작하였으며, 안면도는 5영급과 9영급 모두에서 4월 초에 시작하는 것으로 조사되었다. 소광리 9영급의 경우는 5월 중순에서 6월 중순으로 조사되었다. 형성층에서 세포분열이 종료되는 시기는 소광리 9영급을 제외하고 소광리와 안면도 모두 10월 중순부터 10월 말로 조사되었다. 소광리 9영급의 형성층 내 세포분열 종료는 10월 초였다. 형성층의 계절별 활동을 조사한 결과, 소광리의 형성층 분열기간이 안면도보다 짧게 나타났다. 반면, 소광리 소나무의 형성층으로부터 분열된 세포 수는 안면도보다 더 많은 것으로 나타났다.
