  • Squeeze casting was performed to fabricate the SiC whisker reinforced magnesium matrix composites, and the suitability of the squeeze casting for the production of the sound composites was determined by micro/macro-structures observations and tensile test. The two-directional infiltration of the melt and the removal of air during infiltration using the devised mold were necessary to produce the composites. The pressure of 100 MPa was effective for the production of composites with the SiC whisker volume fraction of 30%, but the pressure should be lower than 50 MPa in case of below 20% in the volume fraction. The SiC whiskers in the squeeze cast composites were randomly and densely aligned, and the SiC whiskers/magnesium interfaces were continuously well-bonded. The elastic modulus, 0.2% proof stress and tensile strength in the composite were about 2.5times, l0times and 4times as large as those of magnesium, respectively, indicating that the squeeze casting sufficiently provides the high strength magnesium composites reinforced with SiC whiskers.

  • The Sejong Formation of Late Paleocene to Eocene is a lower volcaniclastic sequence unconformably overlain by upper volcanic sequence, and distributed along the southern and southeastern cliffs of the Barton Peninsula. The Sejong Formation is divided into five sedimentary facies; disorganized matrix-supported conglomerate (Facies A), disorganized clast-supported conglomerate (Facies B), stratified clast-supported conglomerate (Facies C), thin-bedded sandstone (Facies D), and lapilli tuff (Facies E), based on sedimentary textures, primary sedimentary structures and bed geometries. Individual sedimentary facies is characterized by distinct sedimentary process such as gravel-bearing mudflows or muddy debris flows (Facies A), cohesionless debris flows (Facies B),unconfined or poorly confined hyperconcentrated flood flows and sheet floods (Facies C), subordinate streamflows (Facies D), and pyroclastic flows (Facies E). Deposition of the Sejong Formation was closely related to volcanic activity which occurred around the sedimentary basin. Four different phases of sediment filling were identified from constituting sedimentary facies. Thick conglomerate and sandstone were deposited during inter-eruptive phases (stages 1, 3 and 4), whereas lapilli tuff was formed by pyroclastic flows during active volcanism (stage 2). These records indicate that active volcanism occurred around the Barton Peninsula during Late Paleocene to Eocene.

  • High speed steels with commercial compositions of 10V, Rex20, Rex25, T15, and ASP30 were gas-atomized and then consolidated by hot isostatic pressing (HIPping). The microstructures of gas-atomized powder, as-HiPped billet, and heat-treated billet have been characterized using optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffractometer. In the gas-atomized powders, the solidification structures of 10V and Rex25 alloys show that primary MC carbides embedded within the fine equiaxed dendrites, whereas those of Rex20, T15 and ASP30 alloys exhibited eutectic MC and/or M$_2$C carbides in the interdendritic region. The trace and dendritic morphologies of gas-atomized powder have been retained in as-HiPped billets. The microstructures of as-HiPped billets have been observed to consist of ferrite, $M_6C$ and MC carbides in other alloys with the exception of 10V alloy, which consists of ferrite and MC carbides. The hardness of heat-treated billet makes a favorable comparison with that of as-HIPped billet. This seems mainly to be due to the strengthening by the precipitation of secondary carbides and the change of matrix phase from $\alpha$-ferrite to martensite.

  • For the purpose of the improvement of interfacial shear strength in carbon fiber/aluminum matrix composite material, polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fibers were surface treated by hydrogen sulfide gas continuously between 400 and $600^{\circ}C$. Surface treated carbon fibers were analysed by scanning electron microscope. The existence of sulfur compound on treated carbon fiber surfaces was confirmed, and carbon and oxygen contents of the fiber surfaces were examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Optimum treating temperature for the adsorption of sulfur on the carbon fiber surface was $500^{\circ}C$. Sulfur compounds on the carbon fiber surfaces form the structures of disulfide, $(S)_n$ and thiophene. The decrease in the tensile strength of the carbon fibers was observed less than about 5%.

  • Malignant myoepithelioma (myoepithelial carcinoma), is a very rare malignant epithelial accounting for less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors and has an intermediate malignant potential. We report a case of malignant myoepithelioma arising in the left parotid giand in a 54-year-old man, which was difficult to differentiate from pleomorphic adenoma and other malignant salivary gland neoplasms. Fine needle aspiration cytology of the parotid gland showed cellular smear, composed of overlapped sheets and clusters or individually scattered tumor cells without any acinic or ductal structures. The tumor cells were rather uniform, with distinct cell borders and moderate amount of cytoplasm. The eccentrically located nuclei were oval to round and pleomorphic and showed prominent nucleoli. A few clear cells were noted in the cellular aggregates Metachromatic matrix was seen between individual tumor cells in a lacelike fashion, resembling pleomorphic adenoma. According to the immunohistochemical staining, we recognized that the component cells are myoeplthelial in nature, showing reactivity for the S-100 protein, vimentin, and actin.

  • In this paper, we propose the noise reduction method by using the eigenfilter in cyclic prefix system based on SNR. To obtain the signal eigenvectors for the eigenfiltering, we propose a method of obtaining the autocorrelation matrix by exploiting the circulant property of the received block which results from the cyclic extension of the OFDM symbol. Since the structures of the transmitter and the receiver are not changed, the proposed method is easy to apply to the conventional OFDM system. To verify the proposed method, we evaluate the persistency of excitation (POE) criterion for the input and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in the simulation results.

  • The paper deals with the applications of spectral finite element method to the dynamic analysis of framed foundations supporting high speed machines. Comparative performance of approximate dynamic stiffness methods formulated using static stiffness and lumped or consistent or average mass matrices with the exact spectral finite element for a three dimensional Euler-Bernoulli beam element is presented. The convergence of response computed using mode superposition method with the appropriate dynamic stiffness method as the number of modes increase is illustrated. Frequency proportional discretisation level required for mode superposition and approximate dynamic stiffness methods is outlined. It is reiterated that the results of exact dynamic stiffness method are invariant with reference to the discretisation level. The Eigen-frequencies of the system are evaluated using William-Wittrick algorithm and Sturm number generation in the $LDL^T$ decomposition of the real part of the dynamic stiffness matrix, as they cannot be explicitly evaluated. Major's method for dynamic analysis of machine supporting structures is modified and the plane frames are replaced with springs of exact dynamic stiffness and dynamically flexible longitudinal frames. Results of the analysis are compared with exact values. The possible simplifications that could be introduced for a typical machine induced excitation on a framed structure are illustrated and the developed program is modified to account for dynamic constraint equations with a master slave degree of freedom (DOF) option.

  • We desinged a lattice-matched InGaAs/lnGaAsP quantum well laser that lases at $1.55{\mu}m$ at room temperature, and calculated the gain spectrum as a function of injected carrier density and temperature. For the calculation of band structures and momentum matrix elements, we used a transfer JIlatrix method based on a block-diagonalized 8x8 second-order Ii$.$ P Hamiltonian. This lattice-matched quantum well lases in transverse electric mode. As the temperature increases, the lasing wavelength gets longer, the transparency carrier density increases, and the differential gain is reduced. The temperature dependence of the gain spectrum comes from the temperature dependence of the band structure and that of the Fermi function, and the latter contributes dominantly.nantly.

  • Mycoplasma pneumoniae strain CL-s attached to broth-covered surfaces was examined sequentially during growth from single cells for morphologic and ultrastructural changes using several different electron microscopic techniques. Changes in morphology revealed both round and spindle shapes and observation of cell transitions suggested some type of morphological cycle. The round to-ovoid cells observed in the early stages of growth appeared to be viable, and morphologically and ultrastructurally different from the spherical fors which were produced during the latter stage of growth. The spindle segments were detected appeared to be structurally the same as the terminal cored structure seen in thin sections and may be a growing point or an attachment site of the cell. A tubular structure was observed in the core of the terminal structure and a microtubule-like element appeared to bridge between some spindle segments. A matrix sunstance was observed around single cells as well in the intercellular space of the colonies prepared by critical point metrical triple-layered cytoplasmic mermbranes, surfaces, of which appeared to be structurally different each other, were observed in young cells, whereas symmetrical and thicker membranes were seen in older cells. Small bodies were found in 4d or older cultures and did not appear to contain any internal structures or an easily detectable unit membrane.

  • A theoretical model of multiple cracking failure mechanism is proposed herein for fiber reinforced high performance Cementitious composites. By introducing partial debonding energy dissipation on non-first cracking plane and fiber reinforcing parameter, the failure mechanism model of multiple cracking is established based on the equilibrium assumption of total energy dissipation on the first crack plane and non-first cracking plane. Based on the assumption of the first crack to be the final failure crack, energy dissipation terms including complete debonding energy, partial debonding energy, strain energy of steel fiber, frictional energy, and matrix fracture energy have been modified and simplified. By comparing multiple cracking number and energy dissipations with experiment results of the reference's data, it indicates that this model can describe the multiple cracking behavior of fiber reinforced high performance cementitious composites and the influence of the partial debonding term on energy dissipation is significant. The model proposed may lay a foundation for the predictions of the first cracking capacity and post cracking capacity of fiber reinforced high performance cementitious composites and also can be a reference for optimal mixture for construction cost.
