The structured multiparameter eigenvalue problems in finite element model updating problems

  • The multiparameter eigenvalue method can be used to solve the damped finite element model updating problems. This method transforms the original problems into multiparameter eigenvalue problems. Comparing with the numerical methods based on various optimization methods, a big advantage of this method is that it can provide all possible choices of physical parameters. However, when solving the transformed singular multiparameter eigenvalue problem, the proposed method based on the generalised inverse of a singular matrix has some computational challenges and may fail. In this paper, more details on the transformation from the dynamic model updating problem to the multiparameter eigenvalue problem are presented and the structure of the transformed problem is also exposed. Based on this structure, the rigorous mathematical deduction gives the upper bound of the number of possible choices of the physical parameters, which confirms the singularity of the transformed multiparameter eigenvalue problem. More importantly, we present a row and column compression method to overcome the defect of the proposed numerical method based on the generalised inverse of a singular matrix. Also, two numerical experiments are presented to validate the feasibility and effectiveness of our method.

Investigation of a best oxidation model and thermal margin analysis at high temperature under design extension conditions using SPACE

  • Zircaloy cladding oxidation is an important phenomenon for both design basis accident and severe accidents, because it results in cladding embrittlement and rapid fuel temperature escalation. For this reason during the last decade, many experts have been conducting experiments to identify the oxidation phenomena that occur under design basis accidents and to develop mathematical analysis models. However, since the study of design extension conditions (DEC) is relatively insufficient, it is essential to develop and validate a physical and mathematical model simulating the oxidation of the cladding material at high temperatures. In this study, the QUENCH-05 and -06 experiments were utilized to develop the best-fitted oxidation model and to validate the SPACE code modified with it under the design extension condition. It is found out that the cladding temperature and oxidation thickness predicted by the Cathcart-Pawel oxidation model at low temperature (T < 1853 K) and Urbanic-Heidrick at high temperature (T > 1853 K) were in excellent agreement with the data of the QUENCH experiments. For 'LOCA without SI' (Safety Injection) accidents, which should be considered in design extension conditions, it has been performed the evaluation of the operator action time to prevent core melting for the APR1400 plant using the modified SPACE. For the 'LBLOCA without SI' and 'SBLOCA without SI' accidents, it has been performed that sensitivity analysis for the operator action time in terms of the number of SIT (Safety Injection Tank), the recovery number of the SIP (Safety Injection Pump), and the break sizes for the SBLOCA. Also, with the extended acceptance criteria, it has been evaluated the available operator action time margin and the power margin. It is confirmed that the power can be enabled to uprate about 12% through best-estimate calculations.

Design and Experiments on Mathematical Learning Model for Web Based Instruction (Web 기반 교육을 위한 수학 학습모형의 설계와 실험)

  • In this paper, we aim to draw up an alternative instruction scheme by designing a web based instruction model on mathematics. Some learning materials are developed according to the scheme, and its educational effects are examined when it is committed to through regular curriculum. The study is composed of three major parts; setting of the theoretical foundation on cultivating Web based educational materials, design and composition of Web based teaching-learning model, and its experiments in the regular class. First of all, we are concerned with the core principles on WBI including the learning theories, developing learner oriented instruction model, design as well as build-up process for education materials, and strategy in instruction. Next, we propose an alternative instruction model for mathematics, in which programs to embody mathematics education and instruction on the Web are constructed, on the while, the study is proceeded through the Web Site. Finally, we design and produce a WBI instruction model on the subject of the plane quadratic curves. This model is examined in the regular class to estimate its educational effects compared with traditional teaching standpoints. Concomitantly, we explore essential elements and the direction of future growth associated with the Web oriented education.

  • To evaluate the fundamental factors in the recovery of biogas from the landfills composed of about 40% of volatile solids, the experiments for the samples from the operating landfill site as well as from the laboratory-scale lysimeter were undertaken. In the test of landfills, the change of moisture content, the content of volatile solids (VS), the ratio of saccharide to ligin(Y) and the estimation of landfills reclaimed and the correlationship between VS and Y were investigated. During the experiments with laboratory-lysimeter, temperature, pH, gas production rate, the composition of gas were measured. The mathematical model derived from the the rate coefficient of gas production(k) were proposed from the results of this investigation. Furthermore, the proposed mathematical model from this study was verified with the obtained values from experiments.

  • Cloud computing has been one of the most critical technology in the last few decades. It has been invented for several purposes as an example meeting the user requirements and is to satisfy the needs of the user in simple ways. Since cloud computing has been invented, it had followed the traditional approaches in elasticity, which is the key characteristic of cloud computing. Elasticity is that feature in cloud computing which is seeking to meet the needs of the user's with no interruption at run time. There are traditional approaches to do elasticity which have been conducted for several years and have been done with different modelling of mathematical. Even though mathematical modellings have done a forward step in meeting the user's needs, there is still a lack in the optimisation of elasticity. To optimise the elasticity in the cloud, it could be better to benefit of Machine Learning algorithms to predict upcoming workloads and assign them to the scheduling algorithm which would achieve an excellent provision of the cloud services and would improve the Quality of Service (QoS) and save power consumption. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the use of machine learning techniques in order to predict the workload of Physical Hosts (PH) on the cloud and their energy consumption. The environment of the cloud will be the school of computing cloud testbed (SoC) which will host the experiments. The experiments will take on real applications with different behaviours, by changing workloads over time. The results of the experiments demonstrate that our machine learning techniques used in scheduling algorithm is able to predict the workload of physical hosts (CPU utilisation) and that would contribute to reducing power consumption by scheduling the upcoming virtual machines to the lowest CPU utilisation in the environment of physical hosts. Additionally, there are a number of tools, which are used and explored in this paper, such as the WEKA tool to train the real data to explore Machine learning algorithms and the Zabbix tool to monitor the power consumption before and after scheduling the virtual machines to physical hosts. Moreover, the methodology of the paper is the agile approach that helps us in achieving our solution and managing our paper effectively.

Cognitive Effects of Mathematical Pre-experiences on Learning in Elementary School Mathematics (수학적 선행경험이 산수학습에 미치는 인지적 효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to make out teaching-learning method for developing mathematical abilities of the 1st grade children in elementary school by investigating cognitive effects which mathematical pre-experiences given intentionally by teachers have on children's learning mathematics. The research questions for this purpose are as follows: In learning effects through mathematical pre-experiences given intentionally by teachers. 1) is there any differences between children with pre-experiences and children without them in Mathematics Achievement Test\ulcorner 2) is there any differences between children with pre-experiences and children without them in Transfer Test for learning effects\ulcorner For this study, a class with 41 children in H elementary school located in a Myon near Chong-ju was selected as an experimental group and a class with 43 children in G elementary school in the same Myon was selected as a control group. Nonequivalent Control Group Design of Quasi-Experimental Design was applied to this study. To give pre-experiences to the children in experimental group, their classroom was equipped with materials for pre-experiences, so children could always observe the materials and play with them. The materials were a round-clock on the wall, two pairs of scales, fifty dice, some small pebbles, two pairs of weight scales, two rulers on the wall, and various cards for playing games. Pre-experiences were given to the children repeatedly through games and observations during free time in the morning (00:20-09:00) and intervals between periods. There was a pretest for homogeneity of mathematics achievement between the two groups and were Mathematics Achievement Test (30 items) and Transfer Test (25 items) for learning effects as post-tests. The data were collected from the pretest on April 8 (control group), on April 11 (experimental group) and from the Mathematics Achievement Test and Transfer Test on July 15 (experimental group) and on July 16 (control group). T-test was used to analyze if there were any differences in the results of the test. The results of the analysis were as follows: (1) As the result of pretest, there was not a significance difference between the experimental group (M=17.10. SD=7.465) and the control group (M=16.31, SD=6.974) at p<.05 (p=0.632). (2) For the question 1. in the Mathematics Achievement Test, there was a significant difference between the experimental group (M=26.08, SD=4.827) and the control group (M=22.28. SD=5.913) at p<.01 (p=.003). (3) For the question 2. in the Transfer Test for learning effects. there was a significant difference between the experimental group (M=16.41, SD=5.800) and the control group (M=11.84, SD=4.815) at p<001, (p=.000). From the results of the analyses obtained in this study. the following conclusions can be drawn: First, mathematical pre-experiences given by teachers are effective in increasing mathematical achievement and transfer in learning mathematics. Second, games. observations, and experiments given intentionally by teachers can make children's mathematical experiences rich and various, and are effective in adjusting individual differences for the mathematical experiences obtained before they entered elementary schools. Third, it is necessary for teachers to give mathematical pre-experiences with close attention in order to stimulate children's mathematical interests and intellectual curiosity.

  • Demand for reliability and safety in modem systems has been increased in the research on fault detection and isolation. At traditional approaches to fault detection, redundant sensors have been used. More advanced methods are the residual analysis of signals which are created by the comparison between the actual plant behavior and the output response of a mathematical model. However, mathematical system models are difficult to obtain by using physical laws. These problems can be solved by system identification. In this paper, the transfer function of a direct current motor is estimated by using the system identification. And, the efficiency of the fault detector design is verified by using experiments.

  • In this paper, a numerical scheme is introduced to solve the Cauchy problem for one-dimensional hyperbolic equations. The mesh points of the proposed scheme are distributed along characteristics so that the solution on the stencil can be easily and accurately computed. This is very important in reducing errors of the scheme because many numerical errors are generated when the solution is estimated over grid points. In addition, when characteristics intersect, the proposed scheme combines corresponding grid points into one and assigns new characteristic to the point in order to improve computational efficiency. Numerical experiments on the inviscid Burgers' equation have been presented.

  • In this research report, we are presenting several optimization models for cognitive systems by using stimulus-response matrix (S-R Matrix). Stimulus-response matrices are widely used for tabulating results from various experiments and cognition systems design in which the recognition and confusability of stimuli. This paper is relevant to analyze the optimization/mathematical programming models. The weakness and restrictions of the existing models are resolved by generalization considering average confusion of each subset of stimuli. Also, clustering strategies are used in the extended model to obtain centers of cluster in terms of minimal confusion as well as the character of each cluster.

  • We consider the iterative solution of a quadratic matrix equation with special coefficient matrices which arises in the quasibirth and death problem. In this paper, we show that the elementwise minimal positive solvent of the quadratic matrix equations can be obtained using Newton's method if there exists a positive solvent and the convergence rate of the Newton iteration is quadratic if the Fr$\acute{e}$chet derivative at the elementwise minimal positive solvent is nonsingular. Although the Fr$\acute{e}$chet derivative is singular, the convergence rate is at least linear. Numerical experiments of the convergence rate are given.
