Modern artworks are constructed using a variety of materials and techniques. Sculptures, which predominantly consist of metals, usually have different shapes and consist of different material mixtures. The structural and material properties of these sculptures are often controlled by conservation treatment methods. However, the application of existing treatment methods is challenging at times, indicating that more diverse treatment materials and techniques are necessary. Therefore, in this study, a treatment method that employs volatile corrosion inhibitor(VCI) powder, rather than an anti-corrosion solution, for the conservation and management of metal artworks was used. VCI powder and VCI films containing VCI powder were used, and the results obtained confirmed that both of them showed anti-corrosion effect. Only a slight change in the chromaticity of metal samples was observed, and compared to the untreated samples, the application of the VCI powder resulted in a decrease in the rate of corrosion by half. Moreover, VCI film tests revealed that comparing to the untreated or polyethylene film-treated samples, VCI film treatment resulted in a decrease in the occurrence of corrosion compounds. The contact angle, surface energy, and surface electrical resistance were measured, and the evaluation of these surface properties established the anti-corrosion effect of VCI. Additionally, direct application of VCI and VCI films on actual sculptures further confirmed the anti-corrosion effect of VCI.
The Taereung Royal Tomb from the Joseon Dynasty is the tomb of Empress Munjeong, the second queen of King Jungjong, and it contains various types of stone artifacts. All of these stone artifacts were constructed using coarse- to medium-grained biotite granite. The major types of deterioration of the stone artifacts are identified as surface weathering and biological contaminants. Exfoliation (145 sculptures), granular decomposition (138 sculptures), and repair materials (156 sculptures), along with biological contaminant algae (154 sculptures), lichen (165 sculptures) and moss (97 sculptures), have a high occurrence frequency. In particular, it is deemed that immediate conservation treatment is required, as biological deterioration (algae) represents the most serious condition (grade 3 or higher in 94% of all stones), and it is thought that exfoliation and granulation decomposition are required for long-term conservation management. As a result of equo -tip hardness and ultrasonic measurement, more than 70% of stones were found to have very weak physical properties. Through hyperspectral analysis, organisms were shown to inhabit more than 80% of the surface of burial mound stone artifacts, and P (phosphorus), S (sulfur), Cl (chlorine), and Ca (calcium) were detected in this area. This is because Taereung Royal Tomb has been exposed to the outdoors for hundreds of years and has been weathered by physical, chemical, and biological factors. Therefore, among the stone artifacts in the Taereung Royal Tomb, those with high physical weathering grades are considered to require consolidation to reinforce them physically. Since organisms are highly likely to cause stone damage, they must be removed via dry and wet cleaning. In addition, in order to delay the reoccurrence of organisms following conservation treatment, it is necessary to regularly clean up the soil that has flowed into the burial mound, and to monitor conservation conditions over the long term.
A study on conservation of outdoor painted sculptures has begun to receive attention as increasing numbers of the sculptures, but it is still in an early stage in South Korea. In the case of a painted outdoor object which has been exhibited in National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), 'Black nana' produced by Niki de Saint Phalle in 1964, deterioration was observed, such as flaking and discolouration of paint layers due to ultraviolet light and a sudden temperature change during an outdoor exhibition. For this reason, prior to treatment of the sculpture, to find out the painting techniques and materials applied, cross section, FT-IR, Raman and Py-GC/Mass were conducted. As a result, the type and colour of the paint agree with results of the other studies as well as deterioration pattern. It is expected that the results of this study will be utilized for treatment proposal and conservation material selection of 'Black nana'. In addition, to determine the artist's intention of the artist, cooperation with the foundation of Niki de Saint Phalle and artist's assistants will be carried out.
This study analyzes the sculptural art of SeokhaSichan(石霞施讚, 1893-1958), a significant figure in modern Korean Buddhist art, to re-examine his contributions and standing in the history of Korean Buddhist art. Sichan expanded the boundaries of modern Korean Buddhist art by developing a unique style based on the traditional sculptural techniques he learned from his mentor, Wanho Nakhyeon (玩虎洛現, 1869~1933). This study explores Sichan's artistic development, focusing on his artistic characteristics and sculptural evolution. Sichan's early works are characterized by small sculptures modeled after the main Buddha of Seokguram Grotto and heavily influenced by his mentor, WanhoNakhyeon. In his later works, notable features include a sense of massive volume, larger scale, upright postures, integration of the Buddha statue with its pedestal, and decorative treatment of drapery. These changes are interpreted as Sichan's response to social changes and his reflection of inner contemplation and artistic exploration in his works. This study reveals the influences of Wanho Nakhyeon, collaborations with Toewon Woneil(退雲圓日, 1877~1939), interactions with patron Kim Jiseonghwa(金至誠華), and master-disciple relationship with successor Geumchun Seongpil(金春性必) through literature review and newly discovered works by Sichan. His works and his artistic evolution are pivotal milestones in the history of modern Korean Buddhist sculpture, demonstrating a unique integration of traditional and modern aesthetics. This study provides valuable insights into how Sichan's artistic legacy was inherited and developed by subsequent generations and offers crucial materials for the study of modern Korean Buddhist sculpture history.

Since 1990s, increasing number of public arts have been installed in housing projects in Korea. Most of them were made of granite, bronze and stainless steel and were sculptures as well. Then it resulted in monotony. New technology and community need various Dials in material and genre of Public art. The author wonders if people really want granite sculpture, so started the study of public arts in housing projects. Unfortunately most of people related public art wanted granite sculpture. But there were some hope in survey. They wanted the other genre and material like ceramic wall, art fountain and landmark tower. This means that they care about real world like vandalism and Product Liability, but also want more fantastic and beautiful world in the second step. Recently, the facades of apartments are changing rapidly as more diverse materials in their forms, textures, and colors. And landscape designs are changing their clothes in every second as well. According to these flows public arts in apartments needs more diversified trial within genres and materials to avoid monotonous outdoor.
Buddhist temples and halls signify paradise on earth. Buddhist sutras refer to paradise as a place where flowers fall down like snow, fragrance and music fill the air, flowers blossom and butterflies fly. The Kkot Mun of Buddhist temples are an essential part of the creation of this paradise and are ornamented with elaborate sculptures of flowers and animals. The ornamentation of the Kkot Mun is truly admirable for its artistry and beauty. Although the Kkot Mun is an element of Korean traditional Buddhist architecture, it could also be applied to costume work. I thought the characteristic elements of the Kkot Mun for the costume work were the flower, the lattice and the transparent effect that was made with the lattice and Dagjongee. I used the technique of strap cutting, strap twisting and cut-out for the lattice of Kkot Mun and flower making, knitting, cut-out and quilting for the flower of Kkot Mun. I represented the transparent effect of Kkot Mun with the lapped materials. I selected six remarkable Kkot Mun of Korean temples, revised shapes of these and made six costume works. These six costume works would be the suggestion of costume design if an element of Korean traditional architecture was applied to modern costume making.
In this study, we analyzed the whole design of the necklace in detail, which reflects the artistic sense of handicraft in couture. The purpose of the study was to identify the characteristics of the design based on the analysis findings and to provide basic data to help fashion designers. The research method entailed analyzing trends in necklace design - viewed in fashion magazines and on websites - by year, season, brand, kind, material, color, and image. The identified necklace design characteristics were as follows. First, artistry and originality are dramatically expressed through the use of a broad range of materials. Second, due to the necklace's role as an object of perfect beauty, in a number of images, the necklaces were presented in convergence and contrast with overall costumes. Third, the dramatic effects of layering revealed a strong presence and individualized styling. Necklaces are created with diverse sculptures by realizing the creative imagination of fashion designers. Even though they looked a little different every year, there were designs in the collections constantly. Round shape and princess length were preferred. In particular, the mix type was used to express dramatic effect by focusing neck part in entire styling which different length of necklaces were layered and worn. As a result, it meets the needs of consumers who emphasize brand differentiation and diversity, and it is believed that the role of necessities in fashion will continue and it creates economic demand in the fashion industry.
The objective of this study was to identify the design characteristics of space components observed in Malaysian hotel lobbies. For this study, we conducted a case study on the facades and indoor space components of 15 hotel lobbies in Langkawi and Penang, and drew conclusions as follows. First, designs found in the facades and indoor space components of Malaysian hotel lobbies reflected all of traditional and colonial styles, religious styles including Islamic, and contemporary styles. Second, traditional designs showed rather the modernization of traditions than the preservation of traditions. Particularly in ceilings, walls and windows/doors, conservative or progressive modemization was observed frequently. Third, contemporary designs were mostly formative modernization, and materials and colors still adhered to traditions and nature. Fourth, in applied furniture, traditional wood sculptures were mixed or traditional material rattarn(stems of climbing palms) was utilized actively. Fourth, a large number of designs symbolized the Malaysian first religion Islam. Summing up these results, the common point of designs observed in the facades and indoor space components of Malaysian hotel lobbies was that they were transformed into Malaysian style regardless of whether they were traditional or colonial.
