65% of the Korean peninsula is composed of mountainous area, 97% of which is composed of forest. Therefore, there is high possibility of mountain fire because a lot of potential inflammables such as fallen leaves are stacked on the ground. Moreover, most of the overhead transmission lines in Korea are operated on the mountain. However, there has been very little study for the effect of mountain fire on polymeric insulator for transmission line, though the study is significantly required Therefore, in this study the authors observed the deformation of the housing of the insulator under fire with respect to the ignition time, using artificial ignition testing equipment, and investigated electrical and mechanical characteristics of the insulator by dry withstand voltage test, impulse flashover test and tensile load test.

Differently from the tensile, transverse compression and torsion cases, the bending test of HTS tapes requires a lot of time and efforts, since the sample should be mounted successively onto bent sample holders in the order of decreasing radius and measuring the $I_c$ at each step. The influence of repeated cooling and warming experienced during these processes on the $I_c$ degradation can not be ignored. As a result, in this study, particularly. a new one-body type sample holder which provides continuous bending strains at 77K was devised. And, $I_c$ degradation behavior of Bi-2223 tapes under easy bending condition was investigated and compared that with other cases using Goldacker-type bending tester or respective sample holder.

The hybrid composite materials are recently used in many field as an advanced material due to their high resistance to fracture. However, hybrid composite materials have several problems, especially delamination, compared with homogeneous materials such as an aluminum alloy, etc. In this study, we carried out the tensile test to study the tension failure appearances and tensile ultimate strength of CFRP/Al/CFRP hybrid composite materials. The CFRP material used in the experiment is a commercial material known as CU175NS in unidirectional carbon prepreg. Also Al/CFRP/Al hybrid composites with three kind length of a single edge crack were investigated for the relationship between an aluminium volume fraction and a crack length. The crack length was measured by a traveling microscope under a universal dynamic tester. Futhermore the stress intensity factor behavior was examined according to a volume fraction and an initial crack length ratio to a width.

Tribological properties of high temperature fade were investigated by changing relative amounts of ingredients in the brake friction material. Based on a simple experimental formulation containing 10 ingredients, friction materials were tested using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Twenty-five friction material specimens with different relative amounts of the ingredients were manufactured according to the constrained mixture design .The difference ($\Delta$${\mu}$=${\mu}$$\sub$max/. -${\mu}$$\sub$min/. ) of friction coefficients was measured to represent the high temperature fade. Results from elevated temperature tests showed that five ingredients including cashew, graphite, Sb$_2$S$_3$, ZrSiO$_4$, and Cu fibers played important roles on $\Delta$${\mu}$. In order to find relative importance on fade phenomena among these ingredients, ANOVA(analysis of variance) was performed in this investigation. Thirty-two friction material specimens by changing ${\pm}$50vol.% of these five ingredients were tested to examine the relative importance. Results showed that cashew, graphite '||'&'||' Sb$_2$S$_3$, and cashew '||'&'||' graphite aggravated the fade behavior and Cu fibers improved on fade resistance.

Friction and wear properties of brake friction materials containing different metal fibers (Al, Cu or Steel fibers) were investigated using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Two different materials(gray iron and Al-MMC)) were used for disks rubbing against the friction materials. Results from ambient temperature tests revealed that the friction material containing Cu fibers sliding against cast iron disk showed a distinct negative ${\mu}$-ν (friction coefficient vs. sliding velocity) relation implying possible stick-slip generation at low speed. The negative ${\mu}$-ν relation was not observed when the Cu-containing friction materials were rubbed against the. Al-MMC counter surface. As applied loads increased, friction materials showed higher friction coefficients comparatively. Friction materials slid against cast iron disks exhibited higher friction coefficients than Al-MMC disks during high temperature tests. On the other hand, high temperature test results suggested that copper fibers in the friction material improved fade resistance and the steel fibers were not compatible with Al-MMC disks showing severe material transfer and erratic friction behavior during sliding at elevated temperatures.
The combustion properties for the prevention of the fire and explosion in the work place are flash point, explosion limit, autoignition temperature (AIT) etc.. The using of the corrective combustion properties of the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) of the handling substance for the chemical process safety is very important. For the safe handling of benzyl alcohol which is widely used in the chemical industry, the flash point and the AIT were measured. And, the lower explosion limit (LEL) of benzyl alcohol was calculated by using the lower flash point which obtained in the experiment. The flash points of benzyl alcohol by using the Setaflash and Pensky-Martens closed-cup testers measured $90^{\circ}C$ and $93^{\circ}C$, respectively. The flash points of benzyl alcohol by using the Tag and Cleveland open cup testers are measured $97^{\circ}C$ and $100^{\circ}C$. The experimental AIT of benzyl alcohol by ASTM 659E tester was measured as $408^{\circ}C$. The LEL of benzyl alcohol measured by Setaflash closed-cup apparatus was calculated as 1.17 vol% at $90^{\circ}C$. In this study, it was to possible predict the LEL by using the lower flash point of benzyl alcohol which measured by Setaflash closed-cup tester.

In this study, we investigated the effects of copper and copper-alloy on the frictional and wear properties of low-steel friction material. The proportions of copper and copper-alloy in the brake friction materials used in passenger cars are very high (approximately 5-20% weight), and these materials have significant effects on friction and wear characteristics. In this study, the effects of cupric ingredients, such as the copper fiber and brass fiber, are investigated using the friction materials based on commercial formulations. After the copper and brass fibers from the same formulation were removed, the frictional and wear characteristics were evaluated to determine the influence of the copper and copper-alloy. We evaluated the frictional and wear characteristics by simulating various braking conditions using a 1/5 scale dynamometer. The results show that the friction material containing copper and brass fibers have excellent frictional stability and a low wear rate compared to the friction material that does not contain copper and brass fibers. These results are attributed to the excellent ductility, moderate melting point, high strength, and excellent thermal conductivity of copper and copper-alloy. We analyzed the surfaces of the friction materials before and after the performing the friction tests using a scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscope, confocal microscope, and roughness tester to verify the frictional behavior of copper and copper-alloy. In future studies, it will be applied to the development of copper-free friction materials based on the results of this study.
Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) are a type of “smart” material, and their properties can be controlled rapidly and reversibly under the influence of an external stimulus. The application of an external magnetic field can change the shear modulus, hardness, and friction coefficient of MREs. The friction can cause vibration; moreover, the vibration can affect friction. The change of friction depends on the relative motion, normal force, roughness of the rubbing surfaces, material type, temperature, lubrication, relative humidity, and vibration condition. As MREs are a type of “smart material,” their friction coefficient can be reduced by applying an external magnetic field—the applications of this feature in engineering have been widely studied. However, the friction properties of MREs under vibration have not been tested to date. In this study, MRE samples and a reciprocating friction tester were fabricated. The friction coefficient was measured to evaluate the friction properties under various vibration conditions; subsequently, the wear depth and wear surface profile of the MRE were observed in order to evaluate the wear properties. The results show that the friction coefficient of the MREs decreased when a magnetic field was applied. Moreover, the friction coefficient decreased when the vibrational amplitudes increased. The wear depth of the MRE also decreased as the vibrational amplitudes increased.
