Comparative Analysis on Application of Exhaust Valve of Small-sized Marine Diesel Engine for NIMONIC 86 Material (NIMONIC 86 소재의 소형 선박디젤엔진 배기밸브 적용에 관한 비교 해석)

  • In this paper, NIMONIC 86 material was tried to apply to exhaust valve for small-sized marine diesel engine. The both structural stability and thermal resistance in high temperature were needed to use the NIMONIC 86 material as exhaust valve for small-sized marine diesel eng ine. The purpose of this study is to investig ate the application of NIMONIC 86 material to exhaust valve of small-sized marine diesel engine by comparing, respectively, SUH 3 and STS 316 materials. As the results, NIMONIC 86 material has intermediate characteristics between SUH 3 and STS 316 materials in terms of the strength in condition of room temperature. Further NIMONIC 86 material was evaluated to have better characteristics than SUH 3 and STS 316 materials in terms of the thermal conductivity.

  • The effect of Re-oxidation on the PTCR properties of Sm-doped barium titanate ceramics was investigated by means of impedance spectroscopy. Electrical properties such as resistance vs. temperature, I-V curve were measured and microstructure was observed with SEM photography. Sample was fabricated with thick film process such as tape casting of green sheet, screen printing of electrode pattern, stacking, firing in reduced atmosphere and re-oxidation, etc. As the temperature of re-oxidation increases, resistance jump as a function of temperature enhances but resistance at room temperature increases. These behavior of resistance as a function of temperature, dependent on the re-oxidation condition, is analyzed with Cole-Cole impedance plot and is shown to be related with the degree of oxidation of grain boundary regardless of grain core during re-oxidation process of sample.

  • $VO_2$ thermistor was fabricated on $Al_2O_3$ substrate. and has a CTR (Critical Temperature Resistor) characteristic. $VO_2$ thermistor has a about $10^6$ resistance($\Omega$) in normal temperature. But When temperature is a about $80^{\circ}C$, Resistance of $VO_2$ thermistor is a about some hundred resistance: The resistance of $VO_2$ thermistor increased with increasing length and decreasing width.

  • Auto industry has employed resistance spot welding(RSW) to join steel sheets for structural rigidity of automobile body. Driven by the need to reduce weight and fuel consumption, car companies have been evaluating aluminum intensive vehicles(AIVs) as a way to reduce vehicle weight without downsizing. During the transition from all steel-construction vehicle body to aluminum intensive body, joining aluminum to steel sheets emerges as a serious contender in automobile body. This paper deals with application of transition material to RSW aluminum to steel. Placing transition material insert between the aluminum/steel interface was found very effective to overcome physical incompatibility between aluminum and steel. Use of transition insert allows for two separate weld nuggets to be formed in their respective aluminum/aluminum and steel/steel interfaces. This RSW processes was monitored with the aid of dynamic resistance sampling. Typical patterns in sampled dynamic resistance curves indicated formation of sound nugget. The growth of two separate nuggets was examined by micro-cross section test.

  • Power MOSFET operate voltage-driven devices, design to control the large power switching device for power supply, converter, motor control, etc. We have optimal designed planar and trench gate power MOSFET for high breakdown voltage and low on resistance. When we have designed $6,580{\mu}m{\times}5,680{\mu}m$ of chip size and 20 A current, on resistance of trench gate power MOSFET was low than planar gate power MOSFET. The on state voltage of trench gate power MOSFET was improved from 4.35 V to 3.7 V. At the same time, we have designed unified field limit ring for trench gate power MOFET. It is Junction Termination Edge type. As a result, we have obtained chip shrink effect and low on resistance because conventional field limit ring was convert to unify.

  • The SCM420 used mainly to automobile transmission gear has problems that it costs transmission gear maker much money in carburising treatment. For this, it needs to alternate the existing material and heat treatment to new gear material and surface modification. For this, friction and wear experiment according to sliding speed and applied load was carried out to evaluate the wear resistance of two transmission gear materials with carburising SCM420 and nitrocarburising NT100, The presumed wear volume was calculated with the image processing for evaluation of wear resistance of two transmission gear materials. The results show that nitrocarburising NT100 has a distinguished wear resistance than carburising SCM420.

Effects of some factors on the thermal-dissipation characteristics of high-power LED packages

  • Decreasing the thermal resistance is the critical issue for high-brightness light-emitting diodes. In this paper, the effects of some design factors, such as chip size (24 and 35 mil), substrate material (AlN and high-temperature co-fired ceramic), and die-attach material (Ag epoxy and PbSn solder), on the thermal-dissipation characteristics were investigated. Using the thermal transient method, the temperature sensitivity parameter, $R_{th}$ (thermal resistance), and junction temperature were estimated. The 35-mil chip showed better thermal dissipation, leading to lower thermal resistance and lower junction temperature, owing to its smaller heat source density compared with that of the 24-mil chip. By adopting an AlN substrate and a PbSn solder, which have higher thermal conductivity, the thermal resistance of the 24-mil chip can be decreased and can be made the same as that of the 35-mil chip.

  • An uncooled infrared sensor has been prepared with sputtering, plasma ash, ICP, and PECVD on a Si wafer In order to analyze the resistance characteristics with the bridge length in the infrared sensor, three samples were prepared with lengths of 0 (no bridge), 15 (short bridge), and 29 urn (long bridge), respectively. I-V curves were measured for their resistance characteristics and EPMA for the dopping concentration of the amorphous Si. The phosphorus concentration was about 4 % and the resistance was increased with the bridge length. The bridge length of cantilever is very important factor for improvement of the efficiency in an infrared sensor.

  • CNT (carbon nanotube) resistors with low resistance and negative TCR (temperature coefficient of resistance) were fabricated with yarned CNT (carbon nanotube) fibers. The CNT fibers were prepared by yarning CNTs grown on the silicone substrate by CVD (chemical vapor deposition) method. The CNT resistors were fabricated by winding CNT fibers on the surface of ceramic rod. Both metal terminals were connected with the CNT fiber wound on the ceramic rod. We measured electrical resistance and thermal stability with the number of CNT fibers wound. The CNT resistor system shows linearly decreased resistance with the number of CNTs wound on the ceramic rod and saturated at 20 strands. The CNT resistor system has negative TCR between $-1,000{\sim}-2,000ppm/^{\circ}C$ and stable frequency properties under 100 kHz.

Effect of Specimen Thickness on the Statistical Properties of Fatigue Crack Growth Resistance in BS4360 Steel

  • In this paper the effect of specimen thickness on fatigue crack growth with the spatial distribution of material properties is presented. Basically, the material resistance to fatigue crack growth is treated as a spatial stochastic process, which varies randomly on the crack surface. The theoretical autocorrelation functions of fatigue crack growth resistance with specimen thickness are discussed for several correlation lengths. Constant ${\Delta}K$ fatigue crack growth tests were also performed on CT type specimens with three different thicknesses of BS 4360 steel. Applying the proposed stochastic model and statistical analysis procedure, the experimental data were analyzed for different specimen thicknesses for determining the autocorrelation functions and probability distributions of the fatigue crack growth resistance.
