  • Heavy rainfall intensity may cause shallow slope failures and debris flow by rill erosion and scour on land surface. The paper represents the difference between native soil (weathered soil) and reinforced soil, which is mixed by hardening agent with flyash as main material, for investigating experimental findings of rill erosion and erosion. Results obtained from artificial rainfall simulator show that erosion rate of reinforced soil mixed with hardening agent is reduced by 20% because an amount of eroded soil on slope surface is inversely proportional to the increase of soil strength. For example, rainfall of 45mm (at the elapsed time of 25mins in rainfall intensity of 110mm/hr) triggers rill erosion on native soil surface, but the rill erosion on reinforced soil surface does not even occur at 330mm rainfall (at the elapsed time of 3hrs in rainfall intensity of 110mm/hr). As a result of slope stability analysis, it was found that the construction method for reinforced soil surface would be more economical, easy and fast construction technology than conventional reinforcement method.

  • The wind blowing at high velocity in an open storage yard leads to wind erosion and loss of material. Fence structures can be constructed around the periphery of the storage yard to reduce the erosion. The fence will cause turbulence and recirculation behind it which can be utilized to reduce the wind erosion and loss of material. A properly designed fence system will produce lesser turbulence and longer shelter effect. This paper aims to show the applicability of Support Vector Machine (SVM) to predict the recirculation length. A SVM model was built, trained and tested using the experimental data gathered from the literature. The newly developed model is compared with numerical turbulence model, in particular, modified $k-{\varepsilon}$ model along with the experimental results. From the results, it was observed that the SVM model has a better capability in predicting the recirculation length. The SVM model was able to predict the recirculation length at a lesser time as compared to modified $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. All the results are analyzed in terms of statistical measures, such as root mean square error, correlation coefficient, and scatter index. These examinations demonstrate that SVM has a strong potential as a feasible tool for predicting recirculation length.

  • Cavitation erosion-corrosion implies damage to materials due to the shock pressure or shock wave that results when bubbles form and collapse at a metal surface within a liquid. If the liquid is corrosive to the material, a condition typically encountered in industry, the component materials may suffer serious damage by a combination of mechanical and electrochemical attack. In this study, the mild steel(SS41) was tested by using the piezoelectric vibrator with 20kHz, 24$\mu$m to cavity generation apparatus. The damage behaviour of vibration cavitation erosion-corrosion and the environment characteristics were investigated in various solutions which are seawater, tap water and distilled water. The main results obtained are as follows; 1) The cavitation erosion-corrosion damage behaviour in the seawater increases to occur at the equal degree on the middle portion and the outside portion of specimen. The distilled water specimen, on other hand, occurs beginning on the outside portion across to the middle portion of specimen. 2) The cavitation erosion-corrosion damage in the tap water of low specific resistance more increases than that in the distilled water of high specific resistance at the initial testing time and more decreases than that in it by the CaCO sub(3) film with testing time. 3) Cavitation erosion-corrosion damage characteristic divides into four regions; incubation region, acceleration region, deceleration region and steady state region.

  • This research was carried out to classify erosion shapes and sea-cliff erosion rates were estimated through periodic field survey in Dundu-ri, Anmyeondo. Based on the results of field measurements using the datum-point, the annual sea-cliff erosion rate was estimated about 25~102cm/yr by point. The erosion rate gradually increases from spring to summer, but tends to decrease slightly in autumn. Specifically, the erosion rate between June and July indicated a rather decreasing trend, but showed a sharp increase between July and September. This was attributed to erosion that proceeds more rapidly than during other periods due to severe rainstorms in summer that had a direct impact on the study area as well as storm surges caused by hurricanes. Afterwards, the sea-cliff erosion rate gradually decreased in autumn, but reflected an increasing trend again from December to January. This was attributed to the mechanical weathering that actively progresses as bed rocks on the sea-cliff undergo repeated freezing and thawing in winter. The seacliff in Dundu-ri is divided into three types according to the erosion shape. First, Type A is observed in the sea-cliff composed of the same bed rocks and hard rock stratum. Second, Type B is found in the sea-cliff with a relatively gentler slope compared to Type A, since weathering material including soil is formed on the surface of the sea-cliff consisting of the same bed rocks and hard rock stratum. Lastly, Type C is observed in the sea-cliff where hard rock stratum is mixed with soft rock stratum. In this case, the soft rock stratum slumps and erodes first by precipitation and wave energy, followed by additional slumping of the exposed hard rock stratum.

  • In the present investigation, influence of various material parameters on the cavitation erosion resistance of concrete was investigated on the basis of laboratory experiments. As there is no well-established laboratory test method for evaluating the cavitation resistance of concrete, a test set up called 'cavitation jet' was specially established in the present study in order to simulate the cavitation phenomenon experienced in the hydraulic structures. Various mixtures of concrete were designed by varying the grade of concrete, type and quantity of pozzolana, type of aggregates and cement type to develop good cavitation resistant concrete constructed using marginal aggregates. Three types of aggregates having three different Los Angeles abrasion values (less than 30%, between 30% and 50% and more than 50%) were employed in this study. To evaluate the cavitation resistance a total of 60 cylindrical specimens and 60 companion cubes were tested in the laboratory respectively. The results indicate that cavitation resistance of concrete degrades significantly as the L.A. abrasion value of aggregates goes beyond the 30% value. Incorporation of pozzolanic admixtures was seemed to be beneficial to enhance the cavitation resistance of concrete. Influence of other material parameters on the cavitation resistance of concrete was also noted and important observations have been made in the paper.

  • A potential loss of structural integrity due to aging of nuclear piping may have a significant effect on the safety of nuclear power plants. In particular, failures due to the erosion and corrosion defects are a major concern. As a result, there is a need to assess the remaining strength of pipe with erosion/corrosion defects. In this paper, a limit load solution for the eroded and corroded SA106 Grade B pipes subjected by internal pressure is developed. based in 3-D finite element analyses, considering a wide range of the shape of pipeline, flaw depth and axial flaw length parametrically.

  • Tracking is one of the biggist problems to be overcome in polymeric materials for outdoor insulators. But It can be decreased with the addition of filler such as alumina trihydrate (ATH). In this paper, the tracking of surface and evaluation of insulating ability at silicone rubber is investigated, using the salt fog test. At initial state, the peak leakage current and numbers by dry band arcing is increasing with increasing the filler level, but at aged state decreasing at high concentration filler samples. This is because the roughness of the surface may contribute to the increase in peak leakage cur-rent and numbers. As increasing the filler level, the insulating ability of materials is higher and weight loss is decreased. The mechanism of insulating failure is occurred by the erosion than the tracking and the erosion caused weight loss of 2 g.

  • The dental profession is currently experiencing a technology explosion. Processes are being replaced by modern, inexpensive, and precise techniques that can be used to solve complex restorative problems. Electrical discharge machining(EDM, known as spark erosion in Europe) is a nonconventional, industrial technique that has application in dentistry. EDM may be defined as a metal removal process using a series of sparks to erode material from a workpiece in a liquid medium under carefully controlled conditions. EDM is recently adopted in the dental laboratory to fabricate precision attachments, hybrid tele-scope crowns, Ti-ceramic crowns. EDM has also been used to achieve a passive precision metal-to-metal fit between the substructure bar and the removable superstructure and to correct the fit of implant retained restorations. In this article, a brief history and explanation of EDM is discussed and a description of the use of this process for fabricating attachments and crowns or for correcting the fit of cast restorations is presented.

  • The Plasma Transferred Arc (PTA) overlaying method is lately introduced as one of the most useful surface modification method of the engine component. In this paper, the characteristics of the Co-base and Ni-base super alloy overlay layers by PTA method were investigated through the metallurgical, abrasive and cavitation erosion test. Experimental results showed that the abrasive wear resistance of the Co-base Stellite 6 overlayer was the most superior and followed in order of Nimonic 80A, Inconel 625 and Inconel 718. However, the cavitation erosion characteristic of the Stellite 6 overlayer was the most inferior and it was better in order of Inconel 625, Inconel 718 and Nimonic 80A.
