  • We deposited thin films of organic light-emitting-material $Alq_3$(alumina quinoline) on silicon and slide-glass substrates using thermal evaporation method, and measured spectra of ellipsometry angles ${\Delta}$ and ${\Psi}$ in the photon-energy range of 1.5~5.0 eV using a variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometer. The optical constants, refractive index and extinction coefficient, of $Alq_3$ were determined via the dispersion parameters extracted from the curve-fitting process based on Jellison-Modine dispersion function. The reliability of determined optical constants were verified through the comparison of measured and simulated transmittance curves and the good agreement between simulated absorption-coefficient curves and absorbance spectra measured using a spectrophotometer.

  • Analytic and experimental methods have been used for the characterization of flow behavior of semi-solid Al2024 alloy. Backward extrusion experimnet was chosen to avoid the crack on the unconstrained surface. The material constants for the flow stress by the upper bound technique that agreed with experimental results were determined. The various material constants obtained for al temperature range above the solidus temperature have been fitted and represented in the function of temperature and solid fraction. The obtained result has good agreement only in the high solid fraction.

  • This paper is proposed to select the optimal finite element type in finite element analysis. Based on the NUREG reports, static analyses were performed using a commercial analysis program, $ABAQUS^{TM}$. In this study, we used a nonlinear kinematic hardening model proposed by Chaboche. The analysis result of solid elements by inputting the same material constants was different from the results of the NUREG report. This is resulted from the difference between shell element and solid element. Therefore, the material constants that have similar result to the experimental result were determined and compared according to element type. In case of using solid element for efficient finite element analysis, we confirmed that the use of C3D8I element type(incompatible mode 8-node linear brick element) leads the accurate result while reducing the analysis time.

  • Once assessment of material failure characteristics is captured precisely in a unified way, it can bedirectly incorporated into the structural failure assessment under various loading environments, based on the theoretical backgrounds so called Local Approach to Fracture. The aim of this study is to develop a numerical fatigue test method by continuum damage mechanics applicable for the assessment of structural integrity throughout crack initiation and structural failure based on the Local Approach to Fracture. The generalized elasto-visco-plastic constitutive equation, which can consider the internal damage evolution behavior, is developed and employed in the 3-D FEA code in order to numerically evaluate the material and/or structural responses. Explicit information of the relationships between the mechanical properties and material constants, which are required for the mechanical constitutive and damage evolution equations for each material, are implemented in numerical fatigue test method. The material constants selected from constitutive equations are used directly in the failure assessment of material and/or structures. The performance of the developed system has been evaluated with assessing the S-N diagram of stainless steel materials.

  • A theory for time-dependent, high temperature ablation of poroelastic carbon composite insulators is applied using finite element methods to determine material properties from experimental data. The theory contains important revisions to that in Lee, Salamon and Sullivan[1] by making a sharp distinction between Biots constants and permeability and setting both to analytical functions of porosity. The finite element program and material modeling has been modified to (1) more closely adhere to porous-material theory, (2) include a newly discovered analytical simplification and (3) refine the material property descriptions. Application to experimental problems and comparisons with data permit determination of Biots constants and permeability and their evolution with respect to matrix decomposition and clearly show how material parameters affect the material response, e.g., amplitude and the location of peaks with respect to temperature. In particular, the response is very sensitive to permeability and dominated by it.

  • Within the scope of the plane-strain state, by utilizing the three-dimensional linearized theory of elastic waves in initially stressed piezoelectric and elastic materials, Lamb wave propagation and the influence of the initial stresses on this propagation in a sandwich plate with pre-stressed piezoelectric face and pre-stressed metal elastic core layers are investigated. Dispersion equations are derived for the extensional and flexural Lamb waves and, as a result of numerical solution to these equations, the corresponding dispersion curves for the first (fundamental) and second modes are constructed. Concrete numerical results are obtained for the cases where the face layers' materials are PZT-2 or PZT-6B, but the material of the middle layer is Steel (St) or Aluminum (Al). Sandwich plates PZT-2/St/PZT-2, PZT-2/Al/PZT-2, PZT-6B/St/PZT-6B and PZT-6B/Al/PZT-6B are examined and the influence of the problem parameters such as piezoelectric and dielectric constants, layer thickness ratios and third order elastic constants of the St and Al on the effects of the initial stresses on the wave propagation velocity is studied.

  • It was investigated that the dielectric properties of ferroelectric materials using PZT-5A and PZT thin films. PZT-5A was 20mm diameters, 0.71mm, 0.51mm and 0.41mm thickness respectively and having c-axis preferred orientation. Electrodes(Al) were deposited by evaporation method. PZT thin film was deposited on Pt/SiO$_2$/Si substrate by RF magnetron sputtering method, and annealed at 750$^{\circ}C$ with RTA. Dielectric constants were measured automatically by computer measuring system. Dielectric constants were changed rapidly from 817 to 888 in 0.41mm thickness PZT-5A, 823 to 890 in 0.51mm and 822 to 839 in 0.71mm as the electric field grown. In the case of PZT thin film, dielectric constants were changed from 724 to 1173 in 4500${\AA}$ thickness, 721 to 1204 in 5500${\AA}$ thickness and 811 to 1407 in 7000${\AA}$ thickness.

  • The guard-ring type 3-terminal parallel plate electrodes proposed by ASTM D 150-81 and IEC 250 have been widely used for measurement of dielectric constants of solid dielectrics. However the method using this electrodes causes many uncertainty associated with the measurement errors of the diameter of the guarded electrode. the gap between guarded and guard-ring electrode. the distance of two active electrodes(the thickness of specimen), the roughness and contamination of surface of electrode and specimen. close adherence grade of electrode and specimen. In this paper. a new electrode system of cross capacitance type based on Thompson-Lampard theorem is designed and is employed for the measurement of dielectric constant. The results of simulation of guard-ring electrode and cross capacitance electrode using FEM program show that distance measurement between two electrodes in guard-ring electrode produces large uncertainty. on the other hand this effect in cross capacitance electrode is negligible. Furthermore. the air gap effects in the cross capacitance electrode is 5.6 times less sensitive than that in guard-ring electrode by assuming air gap of $50{\mu}m$.
