Electric power collection is one of the most important factors for the high-speed trains' operation. For the stable current collection, the contact wire of a catenary and the panhead of a pantograph should maintain a constant contact each other. In this paper, the catenary was modeled as a spring with time-varying stiffness from the point of a pantograph moving along the catenary, and the pantograph was modeled as a 3-D.O.F. mass-spring-damper system. Using the adaptive control method, the desired control performance could be obtained with the modeling errors and the time varying parameters. Also the state estimator was used considering the difficulty of applying the sensors obtaining feedback signals. Simulations were accomplished in various ...
The characteristics of heat transfer from horizontal cylinder immersed in both a riser and downcomer of a circulating fluidized beds were investigated experimentally under different values of solids mass flux, superficial air velocity, particle size diameter, and different bed materials. The test results indicated that local heat transfer coefficients in both riser and downcomer are strongly influenced by angular position, and mass flux, as well as by particle size and bed materials. The local heat transfer coefficients around a circumference of the cylinder inside a riser and downcomer of a CFB exhibited a general tendency to increase with decreasing particle size and increasing solids mass flux and vary with different bed materials. Also the averaged heat transfer coefficient calculated from local heat transfer coefficient exhibited the same trend as a local i.e increase with decrease particle size and increasing solids mass flux and vary with varying bed materials. The general trend for a riser local heat transfer coefficient is decrease with increase angle until ${\Phi}$ = 0.5-0.6 (Where at angle =180$^{\circ}$${\Phi}$ =1). Also the general trend for a local heat transfer coefficient in downcomer is to increase with increase the angle until ${\Phi}$= ${\theta}/{\Pi}$ = 0.3-0.5 (Where at angle =180$^{\circ}$${\Phi}$ =1). Comparison the results of the heat transfer in the riser and downcomer of a circulating fluidized beds shows that they have approximately the same trend but the values of heat transfer coefficients in riser is higher than in downcomer.
In this paper, a theoretical and numerical study on bridge simultaneous damage detection procedure for identifying both the system parameters and input excitation mass, are presented. This method is called 'Adjoint Variable Method' which is an iterative gradient-based model updating method based on the dynamic response sensitivity. The main advantage of proposed method is inclusion of an analytical method to augment the accuracy and speed of the solution. Moving mass is a model which takes into account the inertia effects of the vehicle. This interaction model is a time varying system and proposed method is capable of detecting damage in this variable system. Robustness of proposed method is illustrated by correctly detection of the location and extension of predetermined single, multiple and random damages in all ranges of speed and mass ratio of moving vehicle. A comparison study of common sensitivity and proposed method confirms its efficiency and performance improvement in sensitivity-based damage detection methods. Various sources of errors including the effects of measurement noise and initial assumption error in stability of method are also discussed.

In this paper, a structural design method of a smart tuned mass damper (TMD) for a retractable-roof spatial structure under earthquake excitation was proposed. For this purpose, a retractable-roof spatial structure was simplified to a single degree of freedom (SDOF) model. Dynamic characteristics of a retractable-roof spatial structure is changed based on opened or closed roof condition. This condition was considered in the numerical simulation. A magnetorheological (MR) damper was used to compose a smart TMD and a displacement based ground-hook control algorithm was used to control the smart TMD. The control effectiveness of a smart TMD under harmonic and earthquake excitation were evaluated in comparison with a conventional passive TMD. The vibration control robustness of a smart TMD and a passive TMD were compared along with the variation of natural period of a simplified structure. Dynamic responses of a smart TMD and passive TMD under resonant harmonic excitation and earthquake load were compared by varying mass ratio of TMD to total mass of the simplified structure. The design procedure proposed in this study is expected to be used for preliminary design of a smart TMD for a retractable-roof spatial structure.
A low computational cost semi-analytical method is developed, based on eigenfunction expansion, to study the vibration of rectangular plates subjected to a series of moving sprung masses, representing a bridge deck under multiple vehicle or train moving loads. The dynamic effects of the suspension system are taken into account by using flexible connections between the moving masses and the base structure. The accuracy of the proposed method in predicting the dynamic response of a rectangular plate subjected to a series of moving sprung masses is demonstrated compared to the conventional rigid moving mass models. It is shown that the proposed method can considerably improve the computational efficiency of the conventional methods by eliminating a large number of time-varying components in the coupled Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) matrices. The dynamic behaviour of the system is then investigated by performing a comprehensive parametric study on the Dynamic Amplification Factor (DAF) of the moving loads using different design parameters. The results indicate that ignoring the flexibility of the suspension system in both moving force and moving mass models may lead to substantially underestimated DAF predictions and therefore unsafe design solutions. This highlights the significance of taking into account the stiffness of the suspension system for accurate estimation of the plate maximum dynamic response in practical applications.

In this research, the effect of rock mass weathering on the side shear resistance of drilled shaft socketed into weathered rock was investigated. For that, a database of 23 cast-in-place concrete piles with diameters varying from 400mm to 1,500mm were socketed into weathered igneous/meta-igneous rock at four different sites. The static axial load tests were performed to examine the resistant behavior of the piles, and a comprehensive field/laboratory testing program at the field test site was also performed to describe the in situ rock mass conditions quantitatively. No correlation was found between the compressive strengths of intact rock and the side shear resistance of weathered/soft rock. The ground investigation data regarding the rock mass conditions (e.g. $E_m,\;E_{ur},\;_{plm}$, RMR, RQD, j) was found to be highly correlated with the side shear resistance, showing the coefficients of correlation greater than 0.7 in most cases. Additionally, the applicability of existing methods for the side shear resistance of piles in rock was verified by comparison with the field test data. The existing empirical relations between the compressive strength of intact rock and the side shear resistance(Horvath (1982), Rowe & Armitage(1987) etc.) appeared to overestimated the side shear resistance of all piles tested in this research unless additional consideration on the effect of rock mass weathering or fracturing was applied. The existing methods which consider the effect of rock mass condition were modified and/or extended for weathered rock mass where mass factor j is lower than 0.1, and RQD is below 50%.
Motivated by a simpler and more compact hybrid active tuned mass damper (ATMD) system with wide frequency spacing (i.e., high robustness) but not reducing the effectiveness using the least number of ATMD units, the active tuned tandem mass dampers (ATTMD) have been proposed to attenuate undesirable oscillations of structures under the ground acceleration. Likewise, it is expected that the frequency spacing of the ATTMD is comparable to that of the active multiple tuned mass dampers (AMTMD) or the multiple tuned mass dampers (MTMD). In accordance with the mode generalised system in the specific vibration mode being controlled (simply referred herein to as the structure), the closed-form expression of the dimensionless displacement variances has been derived for the structure with the attached ATTMD. The criterion for the optimum searching may then be determined as minimization of the dimensionless displacement variances. Employing the gradient-based optimization technique, the effects of varying key parameters on the performance of the ATTMD have been scrutinized in order to probe into its superiority. Meanwhile, for the purpose of a systematic comparison, the optimum results of two active tuned mass dampers (two ATMDs), two tuned mass dampers (two TMDs) without the linking damper, and the TTMD are included into consideration. Subsequent to work in the frequency domain, a real-time Simulink implementation of dynamic analysis of the structure with the ATTMD under earthquakes is carried out to verify the findings of effectiveness and stroke in the frequency domain. Results clearly show that the findings in the time domain support the ones in the frequency domain. The whole work demonstrates that ATTMD outperforms two ATMDs, two TMDs, and TTMD. Thereinto, a wide frequency spacing feature of the ATTMD is its highlight, thus deeming it a high robustness control device. Furthermore, the ATTMD system only needs the linking dashpot, thus embodying its simplicity.
Determination of jointed rock mass properties plays a significant role in the design and construction of underground structures such as tunneling and mining. Rock mass classification systems such as Rock Mass Rating (RMR), Rock Mass Index (RMi), Rock Mass Quality (Q), and deformation modulus (Em) are determined from the jointed rock masses. However, parameters of jointed rock masses can be affected by the tunnel depth below the surface due to the effect of the in situ stresses. In addition, the geomechanical properties of rocks change due to the effect of metamorphism. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to apply correlation analysis to investigate the relationships between rock mass properties and some parameters related to the depth of the tunnel studied. For this purpose, the field work consisted of determining rock mass parameters in a tunnel alignment (~7.1 km) at varying depths from 21 m to 431 m below ground surface. At the same excavation depths, thirty-seven rock types were also sampled and tested in the laboratory. Correlations were made between vertical stress and depth, horizontal/vertical stress ratio (k) and depth, k and Em, k and RMi, k and point load index (PLI), k and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS), Em and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), UCS and PLI, UCS and BTS. Relationships were significant (significance level=0.000) at the confidence interval of 95% (r = 0.77-0.88) between the data pairs for the rocks taken from depths greater than 166 m where the ratio of horizontal to vertical stress is between 0.6 and 1.2. The in-situ stress parameters affected rock mass properties as well as metamorphism which affected the geomechanical properties of rock materials by affecting the behavior of minerals and textures within rocks. This study revealed that in-situ stress parameters and metamorphism should be reviewed when tunnel studies are carried out.

In a companion paper, Pasala and Nagarajaiah analytically and experimentally validate the Adaptive Length Pendulum Smart Tuned Mass Damper (ALP-STMD) on a primary structure (2 story steel structure) whose frequencies are time invariant (Pasala and Nagarajaiah 2012). In this paper, the ALP-STMD effectiveness on a primary structure whose frequencies are time varying is studied experimentally. This study experimentally validates the ability of an ALP-STMD to adequately control a structural system in the presence of real time changes in primary stiffness that are detected by a real time observer based system identification. The experiments implement the newly developed Adaptive Length Pendulum Smart Tuned Mass Damper (ALP-STMD) which was first introduced and developed by Nagarajaiah (2009), Nagarajaiah and Pasala (2010) and Nagarajaiah et al. (2010). The ALP-STMD employs a mass pendulum of variable length which can be tuned in real time to the parameters of the system using sensor feedback. The tuning action is made possible by applying a current to a shape memory alloy wire changing the effective length that supports the damper mass assembly in real time. Once a stiffness change in the structural system is detected by an open loop observer, the ALP-STMD is re-tuned to the modified system parameters which successfully reduce the response of the primary system. Significant performance improvement is illustrated for the stiffness modified system, which undergoes the re-tuning adaptation, when compared to the stiffness modified system without adaptive re-tuning.
In an actual design, none of the structures with shear behaviors will be designed for torsional moments. Any failure or damages to roofs, infills, shear walls, and braces caused by an earthquake, will inevitably result in relocation of center of mass and rigidity of the structure. With these changes, the dynamic characteristics of structure could be changed during an earthquake at any moment. The main objective of this paper is to obtain the relationship between time-varying eccentricity of load and corner lateral displacement. In this study, various methods have been used to determine the structural response for time-varying lateral corner displacement. As will be seen below, some of the structural calculation methods result in a significant deviation from the actual results, although these methods include the interaction effects of modes. Controlling the lateral displacement of structure can be performed in different ways such as, passive dampers, friction dampers, semi-active systems including the MR damper and active Systems. Selecting and locating these control systems is very important to bring the maximum safety with minimum cost into the structure. According to this study will be show the relation between the corner lateral displacements of structure and time-varying eccentricity by different kind of methods during an earthquake. This study will show that the response of the structure at the corners due to an earthquake can be very destructive and because of changing the eccentricity of load, calculating the maximum possible response of system can be carried out by this method. Finally, some kind of systems must be used for controlling these displacements. The results shows that, the CQC, DSC and exact methods is comply each other but the results of Vanmark method is not comfortable for these kind of buildings.
