The NE-trending Honam shear zone is a broad, dextral strike-slip fault zone between the southern margin of the Okcheon Belt and the Precambrian Yeongnam Massif in South Korea and is parallel to the trend of Sinian deformation that is conspicuous in Far East Asia. In this paper, we report geochemical and isotopic(Sr and Nd) data of mylonitic quartz-muscovite Precambrian gneisses and surrounding foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids near the Myeongho area in the Yecheon Shear Zone, a representative segment of the Honam Shear Zone. Foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids commonly plot in the granodiorite field($SiO_2=61.9-67.1\;wt%$ and $Na_2O+K_2O=5.21-6.99\;wt%$) on $SiO_2$ vs. $Na_2O+K_2O$ discrimination diagram, whereas quartz-muscovite Precambrian orthogneisses plot in the granite field. The foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids are mostly calcic and calc-alkalic and are dominantly magnesian in a modified alkali-lime index(MALI) and Fe# [$=FeO_{total}(FeO_{total}+MgO)$] versus $SiO_2$ diagrams, which correspond with geochemical characteristics of Cordilleran Mesozoic batholiths. The foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids have molar ratios of $Al_2O_3/(CaO+Na_2O+K_2O)$ ranging from 0.89 to 1.10 and are metaluminous to weakly peraluminous, indicating I type. In contrast, Paleoproterozoic orthogneisses have peraluminous compositions, with molar ratios of $Al_2O_3/(CaO+Na_2O+K_2O)$ ranging from 1.11 to 1.22. On trace element spider diagrams normalized to the primitive mantle, the large ion lithophile element(LILE) enrichments(Rb, Ba, Th and U) and negative Ta-Nb-P-Ti anomalies of foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids and mylonitized quartz-muscovite gneisses in the Yecheon Shear Zone are features common to subduction-related granitoids and are also found in granitoids from a crustal source derived from the arc crust of active continental margin. ${\varepsilon}_{Nd}(T)$ and initial Sr-ratio ratios of foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids with suggest the involvement of upper crust-derived melts in granitoid petrogenesis. Foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids in the study area, together with the Yeongju Batholith, show not changing contents of specific elements(Ti, P, Zr, V and Y) from shear zone to the area near the shear zone. These results suggest that no volume changes and geochemical alterations in fluid-rich foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids may occur during deformation, which mass transfer by fluid flow into the shear zone is equal to the mass transfer out of the shear zone.

In external chemical vapor deposition processes including VAD and OVD the distribution of flame-synthesized silica particles is determined by heat and mass transfer limitations to particle formation. Combustion gas flow velocities are such that the particle diffusion time scale is longer than that of gas flow convection in the zone of particle formation. The consequence of these effects is that the particles formed tend to remain along straight smooth flow stream lines. Silica particles are formed due to oxidation and hydrolysis. In the hydrolysis, the particles are formed in diffuse bands and particle formation thus requires the diffusion of SiCl$\_$4/ toward CH$\_$4//O$\_$2/ combustion zone to react with H$\_$2/O diffusing away from these same zones on the torch face. The conversion kinetics of hydrolysis is fast compared to diffusion and the rate of conversion is thus diffusion-limited. In the language of combustion, the hydrolysis occurs as a Burke-Schumann process. In selected conditions, reaction zone shape and temperature distributions predicted by the Burke-Schumann analysis are introduced and compared with experimental data available. The calculated centerline temperatures inside the reaction zone agree well with the data, but the calculated values outside the reaction zone are a little higher than the data since the analysis does not consider diffusion in the axial direction and mixing of the combustion products with ambient air. The temperatures along the radial direction agree with the data near the centerline, but gradually diverge from the data as the distance is away from the centerline. This is caused by the convection in the radial direction, which is not considered in the analysis. Spatial distribution of silica particles are affected by convection and diffusion, resulting in a Gaussian form in the radial direction.

The specific objective of this study was to develop an IRDS (integrated receiver drier subcooling) condenser model for use in a mobile air-conditioning system. A three-zone model based on the desuperheating, two-phase, and subcooling sections of a condenser could be used to estimate the performance with a good accuracy. Overall heat transfer coefficients for each of the three sections, expressed as a function of the air velocity across the condenser and refrigerant mass flow rate and the model using the elemental difference method incorporate calculations to determine the pressure drop, heat performance within the condenser and it includes physical parameters (pass, tube hole size and length) that can be varied to analyze potential design changes without exhaustive experimental efforts. it was found that an accuracy of heat performance was within 5% in case of using the various condensers, the refrigerant pressure drop was predicted within 25% and the pressure drop of air side was well matched with experiment data within 4%.

A safety assessment code, called SAGE (Safety Assessment Groundwater Evaluation), has been developed to describe post-closure radionuclide releases and potential radiological doses for low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste (LILW) disposal in an engineered vault facility in Korea. The conceptual model implemented in the code is focused on the release of radionuclide from a gradually degrading engineered barrier system to an underlying unsaturated zone, thence to a saturated groundwater zone. The radionuclide transport equations are solved by spatially discretizing the disposal system into a series of compartments. Mass transfer between compartments is by diffusion/dispersion and advection. In all compartments, radionuclides ate decayed either as a single-member chain or as multi-member chains. The biosphere is represented as a set of steady-state, radionuclide-specific pathway dose conversion factors that are multiplied by the appropriate release rate from the far field for each pathway. The code has the capability to treat input parameters either deterministically or probabilistically. Parameter input is achieved through a user-friendly Graphical User Interface. An application is presented, which is compared against safety assessment results from the other computer codes, to benchmark the reliability of system-level conceptual modeling of the code.

The geometry and dimensions of an expansion chamber are decisive factors in thermal puffer plasma chamber designs. Because they together dominate the temperature and speed at which the cooling gas from the chamber flows back through a flow channel to the arcing zone for the successful interruption of fault currents. In this study, we calculated the flow and mass transfer driven by arc plasma, and investigated the effects of a flow guide installed inside a thermal puffer plasma chamber. It is found that the existing cold gas of the chamber mixes with hot gases entrained from the arcing zone and is subjected to compression due to pressure build-up in the chamber. The pressure build-up with the flow guide is larger than that without due to a vortex which rotates clockwise around the chamber center. By the reverse pressure gradient, the mixing gas of the chamber flows back out for cooling down the residual plasma near current zero. In the case with the flow guide, the temperature just before current zero is lower than that without, and the Cu concentration with high electrical conductivity is also less than that without the flow guide.

Experimental studies have been performed to observe the basic phenomena of waste bed combustion in MSW incinerator. A reduced scale apparatus was utilized to simulate the combustion behavior in real plant with 1-dimensional transient behavior at the experimental setup, which uses wet cubic wood with ash content as simulated waste. LHV (lower heating value) of solid fuel, fuel particle size and flow rate of combustion air were taken as important parameters of the bed combustion. For the quantitative analysis, FPR (flame propagation rate), TBT (total burn-out time) and PBT (particle burn-out time) was defined. LHV represent the capability of heat release of the fuel, so that a higher LHV results in faster reaction rate of the fuel bed, which is shown by higher FPR. Fuel particle size is related with surface area per unit mass as well as heat and mass transfer coefficient. As the particle size increases the FPR decreases owing to decreasing specific surface area. Air injection supplies oxygen to the reaction zone. However oversupply of combustion air increases convection cooling of the bed and possibly extinguishes the flame.
The effects of geologic structures such as rock joins and bedding planes on the thermal conductivity of a discontinuous rock mass are studied. The expressions for the equivalent thermal conductivities of jointed rock masses are derived and found to be anisotropic. The degree of anisotropy depends primarily on the thermal properties contrast between the joint phase and surrounding intact rock, the joint density expressed as volume fraction and the inclination angle of the joint. Within the context of 2-dimensional finite element heat transfer scheme, the isotherms around a circular hole are analyzed for both the isotropic and anisotropic rock masses in 3 different thermal boundary conditions. i.e. temperature, heat flux and convection boundary conditions. The temperature in the stratified anisotripic rock mass is greatly influenced by the thermal properties of the rock formation in contact with the heat source. Using the excavation-temperature coupled elastic plastic finite element method, analyzed is the thermo-mechanical stability of a circular opening subjected to 10$0^{\circ}C$ at a depth of 527m. It is found that the thermal stress concentration was enough to deteriorate the stability and form a plastic yield zone around the opening, in contrast to the safety factor greater than 2 resulted form the excavation-only analysis.
To understand the dynamical structures of stellar wind bubble, one and two-dimensional calculations has been performed. Using FCT Code with cooling effects and assuming constant mass loss rate and ambient medium density, we could divide stellar winds into the regime of slow and fast winds. The slow wind driven bubble shows initially radiative and becomes partially radiative bubble in which shocked stellar wind zone is still adiabatic. In contrast., the fast wind driven bubble shows initially fully adiabatic and becomes adiabatic bubbles with radiative outer shell. We also determine analytically the onset of thin-shell formation time in case of fast wind driven bubble with power-law energy injection and ambient density structure. We solve the line transfer problem with numerical results in order to calculate line profile of [OIII] forbidden line.

The prediction of performance, exhaust emissions and EGR effect is made by the SI engine cycle simulation. In this simulation several models are employed - two zome, thermodynamic combustion, mass fraction burned, heat transfer, chemical equilibrium, chemical kinetics for NOx, laminar flame speed for ignition delay. The chemical species in burned gas considered are 13 species-CO$_{2}$, CO, $O_{2}$, H$_{2}$O, H$_{2}$,OH, H, O, N$_{2}$, NO$_{2}$, N, Ar - and the cylinder pressure, burned and unburned zone temperature and composition of gas are calculated at each crank angle through the compression, ignition delay, combustion and expansion process. To check the validity of the model, experimental study is done for measuring emissions, combustion pressure and engine output. The predicted values for pressure and emissions show qualitative agreement with the measured data and the EGR effect also shows similar tendency.

In this paper the simulation of a thermodynamic power cycle for a 4-stroke, single-cylinder, spark-ignition engine was studied. In this simulation the cylinder volume was restricted to two zones, a burnt and an unburnt zone, and the convective heat transfer from cylinder contents to surroundings was considered. The chemical species in burnt gas considered was 12 species including H$_{2}$O, H$_{2}$, OH, H, N$_{2}$, NO, N, CO$_{2}$, CO, $O_{2}$, O and Ar. Using this model, computer program for compression, ignition and expansion processes was composed and pressure, temperature and composition of cylinder gas at each crank angle were computed. The composition of CO$_{2}$, CO, $O_{2}$ in the burnt gas when exhaust valve opens, the maximum temperature, the maximum flame speed and the combustion duration were also computed as a function of equivalence ratio. The relation between burnt mass fraction and burnt volume fraction was also computed.
