  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of the exciter attached for the measurement of natural frequencies when extracting the frequency response functions of the test structure in experimental modal analysis. The procedure is first to model the attached exciter as an additional degree of freedom system and next to verify the suggested model by experimentally extracting the natural frequencies of the test structure with various values of exciter mass, stinger stiffness and attachment position of the exciter on the test structure. It is concluded that as additional degree of freedom system which includes the natural frequency of the exciter itself and axial stiffness of stinger should be considered to quantatively define the coupling effects of structure-exciter interaction on the measured natural frequencies. It is not the mass of the exciter itself but the coupling effect of the additional degree of freedom mass-spring system consisting of exciter body and armature coil that characterizes the natural frequency deviation. Therefore, when the natural frequency of this additional mass-spring system is outside of the test frequency range, the coupling effect of structure-exciter interaction can be minimized.

  • The vibration exciter with the accurate calibration requires a low distortion along a single axis over a wide range of frequency. The fabricated piezoelectric exciter was composed of a base, piezoelectric element(Venitron PZT 5A), electrode and seismic mass. Its performance characteristics is evaluated the Mach-Zehnder optical fiber interferometer. The phase of the optical wave passing through the optical fiber around the piezoelectric element was related the vibrational amplitude with a change of the applied sinusoidal voltage on the piezoelectric element. The dynamic characteristics of vibration exciter can be obtained by measuring the vibrational amplitude with a sinusoidal applied voltage on the piezoelectric element. The sensitivity of the fabricated piezoelectric exciter had a 0.4 nm/V which was uniform up to 20 kHz.

  • In order to analyze a pile constructed by vibro-hammer, vibrational characteristics of vibro-hammer should be investigated first. Analytical studies were conducted in order to investigate vibrational properties of vibro-hammer. It is thought that the concept of acting the spring force to the pile head should be replaced by the concept of considering the lumped mass of the exciter and the pile. For the situation of free vibration, spring force increase with increase of spring constant and the amplitude is little affected by the spring constant. Also for the situation of free vibration, amplitude is inversely proportional to the increase of mass of the exciter and it can be seen that spring force increase with amplitude by the same ratio. It can be seen that directions of the spring force and displacement are opposite to that of rotating mass.

  • This paper introduces a process of the development of a vibration test dummy for the posture of inclined seating. Experimental devices was invented to measure apparent mass curves on the contact point of the hip and the back of a seated human body. During the excitation of a rigid seat secured to a hydraulic exciter, force and acceleration signals were measured on the contact points to determine the apparent mass. In order to describe nonlinear characteristics of a human body, seven levels of Gaussian random signal were used for the base excitation. The modeling of the human body will be performed using measured apparent mass curves. The modeling will be done by June and the prototype of the test dummy will be invented in the following six months.

  • A Coriolis mass flowmeter(CMF), which has U-Shaped unique measurins tube was developed fo. direct mass flow measurement. In order to convert the time difference between two measuring tubes motion into mass flowrate and flow quantity, a signal processing circuit, as a part of CMF, was also developed. The CMF was designed as the 15 mm nominal diameter of pipe connection and the 8 mm stainless steel(sus 316) pipe was used for measuring tube. To maximize the flow signal(time difference) from the measuring tubes, the natural frequency of measuring tube was adjusted as 220 Hz, which is same as the frequency of exciter. The maximum displacement at the end of the measuring tube was measured as 0.05 mm and the maximum time difference between two measuring tubes was observed as $20{\mu}s$, which was proper for discrimination and measuring range of CMF. The developed CMF was tested against the gravimetric flowmeter calibrator in the range of 3 kg/min and 30 kg/min. The results showed that the CMF has good linearity and repeatability in the tested flow range. Large size of CMF base on the current study experience will be developed.

  • Precise estimation of a structure's dynamic characteristics is indispensable for ensuring stable dynamic responses during lifetime especially for the structures which can experience resonance such as railway bridges. In this paper, the results of forced vibration tests of different excitation methods (vibration exciter and impact hammer) are compared to examine the differences and the cause of differences of extracted natural frequencies. Consequently a natural frequency modification method is suggested to eliminate effects of non-structural disturbance factors. Also, sequential forced vibration tests are performed before and after track construction according to the construction stage of a railway bridge, and the variation of natural frequencies are examined. Effect of added mass of vibration exciter and variation of support condition due to the level of excitation force are concluded as the major cause of natural frequency differences. Thus eliminating these effects can enhance the reliability of the extracted natural frequencies. Construction of track affects not only the mass of structure but also the stiffness of the structure. Also, the amount of increase in stiffness varies according to the level of structural deflection. Therefore, reasonable estimation of the level of structural response during operation is important for precise natural frequency calculation at design phase.

  • Optimal neuro-control algorithm is extended to the control of a multi-degree-of-freedom structure. An active mass driver(AMD) system on the top roof is used as an exciter. The control signals are made by a multi-layer perceptron(MLP) which is trained by minimizing a sub-optimal performance index. The performance index is a function of both the output responses and the control signals. Structure having nonlinear hysteretic behavior is also trained and controlled by using proposed control algorithm. In training neuro-controller, emulator neural network is not used. Instead, sensitivity-test data are used. Therefore, only one neural network is used for the control system. Both the time delay effect and the dynamics of hydraulic actuator are included in the simulation. Example shows that optimal neuro-control algorithm can be applicable to the multi-degree of freedom structures.

  • Viscoelastic dampers are known effective devices for response reduction under earthquakes and winds. This study addresses how to design the optimum viscoelastic dampers installed at the full scale five-story steel building and novel approach to carry out the experimental work to verify the damper performance. First, an exciter of hybrid mass-type actuator is designed, which can move the building and its mathematical model is derived. The integrated system of building-actuator is experimentally analyzed for mathematical model. Second, convex model is applied for the prediction of required additional damping ratios to reduce responses below a specified target level. Chevron-type viscoelastic dampers are manufactured and installed at the first and second inter-stories, which are optimum places for response reduction. Sine-sweep and white noise excitations, which are generated by the hybrid mass-type actuator, are applied to the full scale building without and with dampers for performance verification. The transfer function of the building with four dampers, two of them installed at each first and second inter-story, are found to be lower than that of the building with two dampers installed at the first inter-story

  • Instrumentation and technologies are described for determining the vibration response characteristics of the pear with frequency range 5 to 320Hz. The computer program for controlling the vibration exciter and the function generator and for measuring the vibration response characteristics of the pear was developed. Mechanical properties such bioyield deformation, rupture deformation and apparent elastic modulus etc. were compared with the vibration response characteristics of the pear. The resonant frequency of the pear ranged from 53 to 102Hz and the amplitude at resonance was between 1.08 and 2.48g-rms. The resonant frequency and amplitude at resonance decreased with the increase of the sample mass, and they were slightly affected by mechanical properties such as bioyield deformation and rupture deformation. Regression analysis was performed among the relatively high correlated parameters from the results of correlation coefficient analysis.

  • Semiconductor piezoresistive type vibration sensor was fabricated by using semiconductor process and micromachining technology. To measure the micro electromagnetic force between coil and magnet, fabricated vibration sensor was used. Toapply micro electromagnetic force produced from the micro exciter, small-sized NdFeB permanent magnet was attached on the mass of the fabricated vibration sensor. The measured electromagnetic force are about 5~180dyne when the applied sinusoidal current of 1KHz in the range of 1.5~8mA. The measurement of micro electromagnetic forcewas performed by changing the distance between coil and magnet. Output characteristics of micro electromagnetic force according to the applied coil current were linear. Furthermore, output results were used to get the transfer constant that is important to decide the efficiency and the performance of the coil and magnet.
