Flow characteristics of a compressible gas flow through a rotating disc-type rotary valve are investigated experimentally under various conditions. It is known that the mass flow rate through poppet valves of 4-stroke cycle engines and through piston valves of 2-stoke cycle engines decrease with increase in engine speed. Rotary valve is one means by which air may be made to flow inter-mittently through a pipe. In this paper an exhaust system simulator of engine was used to experi-mentally analyze the decrease in flow rate at high rotation speeds and to determine what variables other than rotational speed give rise to the observed behaviour. These variables have been included in an empirical equation which is representative of the measured flow characteristics.
Gas sparging is one of the techniques used to control the concentration polarization during ultrafiltration. In this work, the effects of gas sparging in stratified flow regime were investigated during gel layer controlling cross flow ultrafiltration in a rectangular channel. Synthetic solution of pectin was used as the gel forming solute. The liquid and gas flow rates were selected such that a stratified flow regime was prevalent in the channel. A mass transfer model was developed for this system to quantify the effects of gas flow rates on mass transfer coefficient (Sherwood number). The results were compared with the case of no gas sparging. Gas sparging led to an increase of mass transfer coefficient by about 23% in this case. The limitation of the developed model was also evaluated and it was observed that beyond a gas flow rate of 20 l/h, the model was unable to explain the experimental observation, i.e., the decrease in permeate flux with flow rate.
A new instrument, an average BDFT (Birectional Flow Tube), was proposed to measure the flow rate in single and two phase flows. Its working principle is similar to that of the Pilot tube, wherein the dynamic pressure is measured. In an average BDFT, the pressure measured at the front of the flow tube is equal to the total pressure, while that measured at the rear tube is slightly less than the static pressure of the flow field due to the suction effect downstream. The proposed instrument was tested in air/water vertical and horizontal test sections with an inner diameter of 0.08m. The tests were performed primarily in single phase water and air flow conditions to obtain the amplification factor(k) of the flow tube in the vertical and horizontal test sections. Tests were also performed in air/water vertical two phase flow conditions in which the flow regimes were bubbly, slug, and churn turbulent flows. In order to calculate the phasic mass flow rates from the measured differential pressure, the Chexal drift-flux correlation and a momentum exchange factor between the two phases were introduced. The test results show that the proposed instrument with a combination of the measured void fraction, Chexal drift-flux correlation, and Bosio & Malnes' momentum exchange model could predict the phasic mass flow rates within a $15\%$ error. A new momentum exchange model was also proposed from the present data and its implementation provides a $5\%$ improvement to the measured mass flow rate when compared to that with the Bosio & Malnes' model.
The influence of acetylene flow rates on the carburizing behavior of an AISI 4115 steel in 1 ton-class mass production-type vacuum carburizing furnace has been studied through microstructure, carbon concentration, hardness analyses. The AISI 4115 steels were carburized with various flow rates (20, 32.7, 60 l/min) and locations in the furnace (top, center, bottom) at 950℃. The acetylene flow rate played an important role in controlling the carburizing properties of carburized samples, such as effective case depth and uniformity carburizing according to location in the furnace. At an acetylene flow rate of 20 l/min, the carburized samples had a shallow average hardened layer (0.645 mm) compared to the target hardening depth (1 mm) due to low carbon flux and spatial uniformity of carburization (17.8%) in the furnace. At a flow rate of 60 l/min, the carburized samples showed an average hardened layer (1.449 mm) deeper than the target hardening depth and had the spatial uniformity of carburization (98.8%). In particular, at a flow rate of 32.7 l/min, the carburized samples had an average hardened layer (1.13 mm) close to the target hardening depth and had the highest carburizing uniformity (99.1%). As a result, an appropriate flow rate of 32.7 l/min was derived to satisfy the target hardening depth and to have spatial uniform hardened layer in the furnace.

Numerical analysis and experimental verification of a thermal liquid mass flow meter (LMFM) were performed. The configuration of the LMFM was the same as a gas mass flow meter (GMFM), but the opposite results in temperature difference between upstream and downstream thermistors occurred. In the case of the gas, the convection depending on the flow of thermal mass was small and comparable to the conduction through the sensor tube wall. The temperature difference was proportional to the mass flow rate due to their interaction. For the liquid flow, the convection overwhelmed the wall conduction because of the large flow of thermal mass caused by high density. The temperature difference in this case was inversely proportional to the mass flow rate. The tube diameter and heater wiring width are important design parameters, and the optimized sensor can be used to measure and control the infinitesimal liquid flow rate.

The objective of this study was to investigate the oxygen transfer characteristics of an ejector aeration system. In order to evaluate the oxygen transfer performance of the ejector aeration system, a comparative experiment was conducted on a conventional blower aeration system. The effect of entrained air flow rate and aerating water temperature on the oxygen transfer efficiency was investigated. The dissolved oxygen concentration increased with increasing entrained air flow rate, but decreased with increasing aerating water temperature for two aeration systems. The volumetric mass transfer coefficient increased with increasing entrained air flow rate and with increasing aerating water temperature for both aeration systems. The average mass transfer coefficient for the ejector aeration system was about 20% and 42% higher than that of the blower aeration system within the experimental range of entrained air flow rates and aerating water temperatures.
In this study, we optimized the shape of the surface aerator that will be installed in a biological reactor using the response surface method. Response surfaces of mass flow rate, impeller torque, mass flow rate per impeller torque are generated and used to track the optimum shape of the aerator. MOGA(Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm)method is adopted to find the optimum results. By increasing the mass flow rate per impeller torque, increase of oxygen supply efficiency to a reactor is anticipated. To verify the usability of the surface aerator, PIV measurements on flow fields inside a scale-downed biological reactor model are carried out.

Catalytic converters are the most fascinating and complicated chemical reactors. They are most often operated in the transient state with respect to composition, flow rate, temperature, etc. The mathermatical model developed in this work accounts for simultaneous heat and mass transfer, chemical reaction, and multi dimensional flow characteristics to analyze the light-off performance of monolithic catalytic converter with comparable mass flow rate. To validate the mathematical model, comparison between experimental and numerical results has been performed. The numerical results show a good agreement with experimental data. It is forund that inflow rate shows major effect on the characteristics of termal response of catalytic converter.
RELAP5/Mod3.1 code was assessed with the semiscale experiment S-NC-3, and S-NC-4, which simulated the two-phase natural circulation and reflux condensation for the SBLOCA of PWR, respectively . Test S-NC-3 and S-NC-4 calculation results showed that RELAP5/Mod3.1 quite well describes the influence of steam generator secondary side heat transfer degradation on both two-phase natural circulation and reflux condensation. A comparison between the calculated and measured two-phase mass flow rate in test S-NC-3 shows good agreement for primary mass inventory more than 92%. And RELAP5/Mod3.1 have a good mass flow rate prediction capability for the transient such as S-NC-4 except some flow oscillations. The reflux flow rate for S-NC-4 test is under predicted, and the overall results verify that the correct prediction of the reduced liquid level appears to be required for the correct calculation of the overall phenomena.

The aim of this study is to provide fundamental informations that make it possible to use a cool stream and a hot stream simultaneously. We changed the pressure of compressed air that flows into a tube, the inner diameter of orifice that a cold stream exits, and the mass flow rate ratio. And in each case, we measured the temperature of a cold stream and a hot stream in each exit of a tube. Also we measured the axial and the radial temperature distribution in internal spare of a tube. From the study, fellowing conclusive remarks 7an be made. First, As the number of nozzles increase, separation point move into the hot exit. Second, When we use guide vane type nozzle, the axial temperature distribution constant over the 0.75 of air mass flow rate radio. Third, When we use Spiral type nozzle, axial and radial temperature distribution in the inner space is higher than another nozzle. Fourth, Axial and radial temperature distribution in the inner space vortex-tube is determined by separation point. And separation point is moved by changing of air mass flow rate ratio. At last, A heating apparatus is possible far vortex-tube to use.
