We have reviewed three different techniques to estimate molecular cloud mass, and discussed the uncertainties involved. We found that determination of the most important parameter, the $^{13}CO$ abundance, is not very sensitive to the real LTE conditions, and that any possible error in deriving LTE column density may not introduce an error in the total gas column density, as far as the visual extinction is established for the object cloud. The virial technique always endows the largest mass estimate as there are several uncertainties, even if the cloud is in virial equilibrium. The strong indicator of the cloud perturbation is the centroid velocity dispersion. The mass using CO luminosity is based on the empirical law, but weakly dependent on the virial assumption, thus it still gives a larger mass estimate. The mass discrepancy is likely to be inevitable, and a factor of two or three difference between mass estimates could easily be attributed to the uncertainties mentioned above. The LTE mass estimate may be the most reliable one if we use the relation visual extinction and $^{13}CO$ column density of the object cloud, and the intercept is included.

The aim of the work is to present a new method of estimating the existence of a mass unbalance and mass unbalance under a crack on a rotating shaft. This is an advanced new method for the detection of a mass unbalance and a new way to estimate the position of it under crack influence. As the first step, the shaft is physically modelled with a finite element method and the dynamic mathematical model is derived by using the Hamilton principle; thus, the system is represented by various subsystems. The equation of motion of the shaft with a mass unbalance and a crack are established by adapting the local mass unbalance and the stiffness change. this is a reference system for the given system. Based on a model for transient behavior induced from vabrations measured at the bearings, an elementary Estimator is designed to detect mass unblance on the shaft. Using the Estimator, a bank of the Estimator is established to estimate the estimate the position of the mass unbalance and arranged at a certain location on the shaft. The informations for the given system are the measurements of bearing displacements and velocity.

We investigate the mass and energy of erupting plasma observed in X-rays and EUV, which is associated with a coronal mass ejection (CME) and an X-class flare. The erupting plasma was observed by both the X-ray telescope (XRT) on Hinode and the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO). We estimate the emission measures of the erupting plasma using a differential emission measure method. The plasma erupts with a loop-like structure in X-ray and EUV. We estimate the mass of erupting plasma assuming a cylinder structure. In addition, we estimate the radiative loss, thermal conduction, thermal, and kinetic energies of the eruptive hot plasma. We find that the thermal conduction timescale is much shorter than the duration of the eruption. This result implies that additional heating during the eruption may be required to explain the hot plasma observations in X-rays.
Current estimates of the ice-mass balance over the Greenland and the Antarctica using retrievals of time-varying gravity from GRACE are presented. Two different GRACE gravity data, UTCSR RL01 and UTCSR RL04, are used for the estimates to examine the impact of the relative accuracy of background models in the GRACE data processing for inter-annual variations of GRACE gravity data. In addition, the ice-mass balance is appraised from the conventional GRACE data, which represents global gravity, and the filtered GRACE data, which isolates the terrestrial gravity effect from GRACE gravity data. The former estimate shows that there exists similar negative trends of ice-mass balance over the Greenland from UTCSR RL01 and UTCSR RL04 while the time series from the both GRACE data over the Antarctica differ significantly from each other, and no apparent trends are observed. The result for the Greenland from the latter calculation is similar to the former estimate. However, the latter calculation presents positive trends of ice-mass balance for the Antarctica from both GRACE data. These results imply that residual oceanic geophysical signals, particularly for ocean tides, significantly corrupt the ice-mass estimate over the Antarctica as leakage error. In addition, the spatial alias of GRACE is likely to affect the ice-mass balance because the spatial spectrum of ocean tides is not conserved via GRACE sampling, and thus ocean tides contaminate terrestrial gravity signal. To minimize the alias effect, I suggest to use the combined gravity models from GRACE, SLR and polar motion.
Numerical methods to estimate behaviors of jointed rock mass can be roughly divided into two method : discontinuous model and continuum model. Generally, distinct element method (DEM) is applied in discontinuous model, and finite element method (FEM) or finite difference method (FDM) is utilized in continuum model. To predict a behavior of discontinuous model by DEM, it is essential to understand characteristics of joints developed in rock mass through field tests. However, results of field tests can not provide full information about rock mass because field tests is conducted in limited area. In this paper, discontinuous analysis by UDEC and continuous analysis by FLAC is utilized to estimate a behavior of a tunnel in jointed rock mass. For including discontinuous analysis in continuous analysis, joints in rock mass is considered by reducing rock mass properties obtained by RMR and decreasing shear strength of rock mass. By comparing and revising two analysis results, analysis results similar with practical behavior of a tunnel can be induced and appropriate support system is decided.
Marine structures are often in contact with inner or outer fluid as stern, ballast and oil tanks. The effect of interaction between fluid and structure has to be taken into consideration when we estimate the dynamic response of the structure appropriately. Fatigue damages can also be sometimes observed in these tanks which seem to be caused by resonance. Thin walled tank structures in ships which are in contact with water and located near engine or propeller where vibration characteristics are strongly affected by the added mass of containing water. Therefore it is essentially important to estimate the added mass effect to predict vibration characteristics of tank structures. But it is difficult to estimate exactly the magnitude of the added mass because this is a fluid-structure interaction problem and is affected by the free surface, vibration modes of structural panels and the depth of water. I have developed a numerical tool of vibration analysis of 3-dimensional tank structure using finite elements for plates and boundary elements for fluid region. In the present study, the effect of added mass of containing water, the effect of structural constraint between panels on the vibration characteristics are investigated numerically and discussed. Especially a natural frequencies by the fluid interaction between 2 panels and a breath mode of the water tank are focused on.

The body segment parameters of twelve young male Korean were measured to compare with the results of foreign cadaver studies. A human body was assumed to have fourteen body segments. The mass of each segment was measured with a water immersion test and the mass center of a segment was determined on the balance platform by changing postures. In the case of Korean, because of the difference in body proportion, the mass center of whole-body is located further from the distal end of head(Korean : 44.9% vs. Caucasian : 41.2%), and the mass center of each segment also located in different proportional locations. The existing regression equations, which can estimate segment mass based upon the anthropometric dimensions, estimates segment mass (the mass of shank) for Korean with 13% error. Therefore, it is not recommended to estimate the mass, and the moment of inertia of body segment of Korean based on the existing equations. However, the density information of body constituents was similar enough to apply it to Korean density. It was validated by the comparison between the results of the direct immersion method and 3-dimensional volume reconstruction of segment form the cross sectional images of CT-scan. The average body density measured form twelve subjects was $1.035{\;}kg/m^3$ and showed deceasing trendency.
The permeability coefficient is an essential parameter for the study of seepage flow in fractured rock mass. This paper discusses the feasibility and application value of using readily available RQD (rock quality index) data to estimate mine water inflow and grouting quantity. Firstly, the influence of different fracture frequencies on permeability in a unit area was explored by combining numerical simulation and experiment, and the relationship between fracture frequencies and pressure and flow velocity at the monitoring point in fractured rock mass was obtained. Then, the stochastic function generation program was used to establish the flow analysis model in fractured rock mass to explore the relationship between flow velocity, pressure and analyze the universal law between fracture frequency and permeability. The concepts of fracture width and connectivity are introduced to modify the permeability calculation formula and grouting formula. Finally, based on the on-site grouting water control example, the rock mass quality index is used to estimate the mine water inflow and the grouting quantity. The results show that it is feasible to estimate the fracture frequency and then calculate the permeability coefficient by RQD. The relationship between fracture frequency and RQD is in accordance with exponential function, and the relationship between structure surface frequency and permeability is also in accordance with exponential function. The calculation results are in good agreement with the field monitoring results, which verifies the rationality of the calculation method. The relationship between the rock mass RQD index and the rock mass permeability established in this paper can be used to invert the mechanical parameters of the rock mass or to judge the permeability and safety of the rock mass by using the mechanical parameters of the rock mass, which is of great significance to the prediction of mine water inflow and the safety evaluation of water inrush disaster management.
Discovered in the South Pole Telescope Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SPT-SZ) survey, the galaxy cluster SPT-CL J0205-5829 at z = 1.322 might be the most massive known SZ-selected galaxy cluster at z > 1.2. The SZ and X-ray combined mass estimate is $M500=(4.8{\pm}0.8){\times}10^{14}M_{\odot}$. To confirm this extreme mass, we perform weak lensing analysis of SPT-CL J0205-5829 using HST data. Our analysis produces a mass estimate consistent with the previous results obtained from non-lensing methods. In this poster, we describe details of the method including shape measurement, PSF correction, source selection, and mass estimation. We also present a two-dimensional mass map and compare this to the galaxy distribution.
