  • A new surface shape of an internal cooling passage which largely reduces the pressure drop and enhances the surface heat transfer is proposed in the present study. The surface shape of the cooling passage is consisted of the concave dimple and the riblet inside the dimple which is protruded along the stream-wise direction. Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) for the fully developed turbulent flow and thermal fields in the cooling passage is conducted. The Numerical simulations for the 5 different surface shapes are conducted at the Reynolds number of 2800 based on the mean bulk velocity and channel height and Prandtl number of 0.71. The driving pressure gradient is adjusted to keep a constant mass flow rate in the x direction. The thermo-aerodynamic performance for the 5 different cases used in the present study was assessed in terms of the drag, Nusselt number, Fanning friction factor, Volume and Area goodness factor in the cooling passage. The value of maximum ratio of drag reduction is -22.86 [%], and the value of maximum ratio of Nusselt number augmentation is 7.05 [%] when the riblet angle is $60^{\circ}$ (Case5). The remarkable point is that the ratio of Nusselt number augmentation has the positive value for the surface shapes which have over $45^{\circ}$ of the riblet angle. The maximum Volume and Area goodness factor are obtained when the riblet angle is $60^{\circ}$ (Case5).

  • In this study, change in water-dissolved oxygen (DO) was analyzed under various synthetic water qualities and nanobubbles (NBs) application conditions, such as gas type, initial DO as well as water dissolved, suspended and organic matters contents. When oxygen, rather than air, was introduced into nitrogen-desorbed ultra-pure water, the stagnation time was significantly increased. It took ten days for DO concentration to drop back to saturation. The higher the initial DO concentration, the longer particles were observed above saturation due to particle stability improvement. The oxygen mass transfer rate of 0.0482 mg/L/min was found to reach a maximum at an electrolytic concentration of 0.75 g/L, beyond which the transfer rate decreased due to adsorption of negative ions of the electrolyte at the interface. High levels of turbidity caused by suspended solids have become a barrier to dissolution of NBs oxygen into the water solution, and thus affected the transfer performance. On the other hand, by applying NBs for just an hour, up to 7.2% degradation of glucose as representative organic matter was achieved. Thus, NBs technology would maintain a high DO extent for an extended duration, and thus can improve water quality provided that water chemistry is closely monitored during its application.

  • An experimental study was carried out to understand the heat transfer performance of a miniature loop heat pipes using water-based copper nanoparticles suspensions as the working fluid. The suspensions consisted of deionized water and copper nanoparticles with an average diameter of 80 nm. Effects of the cupper mass concentration and the operation pressure on the average evaporation and condensation heat transfer coefficients, the critical heat flux and the total heat resistance of the mLHPs were investigated and discussed. The pressure frequency also depends upon the evaporator temperature which has been maintained from $60^{\circ}C$ to $90^{\circ}C$. The Investigation shows 60% filling ratio gives the highest inside pressure magnitude of highest number pressure frequency at any of setting of evaporator temperature and 5wt% results the lowest heat flow resistance.

  • Flow condensation heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of R22, R134a, R407C, and R410A were measured on horizontal plain and microfin tubes. The experimental apparatus was composed of three main parts; a refrigerant loop, a water loop and a water/glycol loop. The test section in the refrigerant loop was made of both a plain and a microfin copper tube of 9.52 mm outside diameter and 1.0 m length. The refrigerant was cooled by passing cold water through an annulus surrounding the test section. Tests were performed at a fixed refrigerant saturation temperature of $40^{\circ}C$ with mass fluxes of 100, 200, and 300 kg/$m^2s$. Test results showed that at similar mass flux the flow condensation HTCs of R134a were similar to those of R22 for both plain and microfin tubes. On the other hand, HTCs of R407C were lower than those of R22 by 11~l5% and 23~53% for plain and microfin tubes respectively. And HTCs of R410A were similar to those of R22 for a plain tube but lower than those of R22 by 10~21% for a microfin tube. In general, HTCs of a microfin tube were 2.0~3.0 times higher than those of a plain tube.

  • The effective thermal conductivities of $Mm\;(La_{0.6-0.8})\;Ni_{4.0}Co_{0.6}Mn_{0.2}Al_{0.2}$ (TL-492) with hydrogen and helium have been examined. Experiment results show that pressure has great influence on effective thermal conductivity in Low pressure range (below 0.5 MPa). And that influence decreases rapidly with increase of gas pressure. The reason is at low pressure, the mean free path of gas becomes greater than effective thickness of gas film which is important to the heat transfer mechanism in this research. And, carbon fibers have been used to try to enhance the poor thermal conductivity of TL-492. Three types of carbon fibers and three mass fractions have been examined and compared. Naturally, the highest effective thermal conductivity has been reached with carbon fiber which has highest thermal conductivity, and highest mass fraction. This method has acquired 4.33 times higher thermal conductivity than pure metal hydrides with quite low quantity of additives, only 0.99wt% of carbon fiber. This is a good result comparing to other method which can reach higher effect ive thermal conductivity but needs much higher mass fraction of additives too.

  • Gas hydrates are ice-like crystalline compounds that form under low temperature and elevated pressure conditions. Recently, gas hydrates present a novel means for natural gas storage and transportation with potential applications in a wide variety of areas. An important property of hydrates that makes them attractive for use in gas storage and transportation is their very high gas-to-sol id ratio. In addition to the high gas content, gas hydrates are remarkably stable. The main barrier to development of gas hydrate technology is the lack of an effective mass production method of gas hydrate in solid form. In this study, some performance comparison among several cases classified by different volume sizes of solution were carried to identify the characteristics due to the volume increment. And it is found that one of the main reasons disturbing hydrate formation is related to the lack of cooling heat transfer due to the volume increase of the solution. So, three kinds of heat transfer plates which have different shapes and cross sectional areas were made and tested for the performance comparison following to the shape and area of each plate. Finally it is clarified that the heat transfer is one of the major factors effecting hydrate formation performance and the installation of heat transfer plate can enhance the formation performance especially not in terms of the quantity but the speed.

  • Radiation dose enhancement is a method of increasing the cross section of interaction, thus increasing the deposited dose. This can contribute to linear energy transfer, LET and relative biological effectiveness, RBE. Previous studies on dose enhancement have been mainly focused on X, ${\gamma}-rays$, but in this study, the dose enhancement was analyzed for proton using Monte Carlo simulation using MCNP6. Based on the mathematical modeling method, energy spectrum and relative intensity of spread out Bragg-peak were calculated, and evaluated dose enhancement factor and dose distribution of dose enhancement material, such as aurum and gadolinium. Dose enhancement factor of 1.085-1.120 folds in aurum, 1.047-1.091 folds in gadolinium was shown. In addition, it showed a decrease of 95% modulation range and practical range. This may lead to an uncertain dose in the tumor tissue as well as dose enhancement. Therefore, it is necessary to make appropriate corrections for spread out Bragg-peak and practical range from mass stopping power. It is expected that Monte Carlo simulation for dose enhancement will be used as basic data for in-vivo and in-vitro experiments.

  • 'Ionic wind' is phenomenon induced by corona discharge which occurs when large electric potential is applied to electrodes with high curvature. The ionic wind has advantage that it could generate forced convective flow without any external energy like separate pump. In this study, 'pin-mesh' arrangement is utilized for experiments. First, optimization of configuration is conducted with local momentum of ionic wind behind the mesh. Empirical equation for prediction about velocity profile was derived using the measured results. Secondly, the enhancement of mass transfer rate of acetone with ionic wind was analyzed. Also, the drying efficiency using a fan which has same flow rate was compared with ionic wind for identification of additional chemical reaction. At last, the drying process of organic solvent was visualized with image processing. As a result, it was shown that the use of ionic wind could dry organic matter four times faster than the natural condition.

  • In this study, external condensation heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of two non-azeotropic refrigerant mixtures of HFC32/HFC152a at various compositions were measured on both 26 fpi low-fin and Turbo-C enhanced tubes, of 19.0 mm outside diameter. All data were taken at the vapor temperature of $39^{\circ}C$, with a wall subcooling of 3~8 K. Test results showed that the HTCs of the tested mixtures on the enhanced tubes were much lower than the ideal values calculated by mass fraction weighting of the pure component HTCs. Also, the reduction of HTCs due to the diffusion vapor film was much larger than that of a plain tube. Unlike HTCs of pure fluids, HTCs of the mixtures measured on enhanced tubes increased, as the wall subcooling increased, which was due to the sudden break-up of the vapor diffusion film with an increase in wall subcooling. Finally, the heat transfer enhancement ratios for mixtures were found to be much lower, than those of pure fluids.

  • We developed micro power generation system using piezoelectric materials. In our system, the ambient vibrating energy is converting to electric energy by deflection of piezoelectric beams. The system consists of energy generating parts, converting enhancement parts, electric regulation and charging parts, and interface with small-energy-consuming mobile devices. The geometry of piezoelectric beams, the source of vibrating energy, and the electric load of target application determine the characteristics of generating electric power, such as impedance, voltage, current and power density. Therefore, we made a model for analysis of generating power with given information such as piezoelectric materials, geometry, vibration type, and mass. With this model, we can calculate capacitance of piezoelectric beams, generating voltage, current, and power. To obtain maximum energy transfer efficiency, we approached this study in the view of material, electrical, and mechanical engineering
