This paper presents the most significant results obtained within a broad-ranging experimental program aiming to evaluate both the effectiveness and the robustness of a Base Isolation (BIS) and a Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) combined control strategy (BI & TMD). Following a brief description of the experimental model set-up and the adopted kinematic scaling technique, this paper describes the identification procedures carried out to characterize the system''s model. The dynamic response of a small-scale model to recorded earthquake excitations, which has been scaled by using the Buckingham pi-theorem, are later presented and discussed. Finally, the effectiveness and robustness of the combined control strategy is evaluated by comparing the model's dynamic response. In particular, reduction in relative displacements and absolute accelerations due to the application of different mass damping systems is investigated.

The Core Support Barrel (CSB) is a major component of Reactor Internals, and is designed to support and protect the Reactor Core. In this study, Reactor Core, Core Shroud and CSB were simplified to coaxial cylinders and then the offset of Reactor Core & Core Shroud to the dynamic characteristic of CSB was analyzed. For the beam modes, natural frequencies of the cantilevered cylinder are compared with those of the cantilevered beam. And it was found out that shear modulus must be used correctly to convert the shell model to the equivalent beam model. From the dynamic characteristics of the beam model, it was found out that natural frequencies are proportional to the length of Reactor Core & Core Shroud and inversely proportional to the mass. From the comparison with the dynamic characteristics of a beam model and a lumped-mass model it was found out that the size of lumped-mass must be determined considering both the length and the mass of Reactor Core & Core Shroud.

For a seismic design or performance evaluation of a structure, an experimental investigation on a scale model of the structure or numerical analysis based on the finite element model is considered. Regarding the numerical analysis, a three-dimensional finite element analysis is performed if a high accuracy of the results is required, while a sensitivity or fragility analysis which uses huge seismic ground motions leads to the use of a lumped-mass stick model. The conventional modeling technique to build the lumped-mass stick model calculates the amount of the lumped mass by considering the geometric shape of the structure, like a tributary area. However, the eigenvalues of the conventional model obtained through such a calculation are normally not the same as those of the actual structure. In order to overcome such a deficiency, in this study, a new lumped mass stick model is proposed. The model is named the "frequency adaptive-lumped-mass stick model." It provides the same eigenvalues and similar dynamic responses as the actual structure. A non-prismatic column is considered as an example, and its natural frequencies as well as the dynamic performance of the new lumped model are compared to those of the full-finite element model. To investigate the damping effect on the new model, 1% to 5% of the critical damping ratio is applied to the model and the corresponding results are also compared to those of the finite element model.

In this paper a new modeling and an optimal pole-placement control for the suspension system of Macpherson type are investigated. The rotational motion of the unsprung mass is emphasized in the new modeling. The two generalized coordinates selected in the new model are the vortical displacement of sprung mass and the angular displacement of control arm. Both variables are measured from their static equilibrium points. It is shown that the conventional model is a special case of the new model since the transfer function of the new model coincides with that of the conventional one if the lower support point of the shock absorber is located at the mass center of the unsprung mass. It is also shown that the resonance frequencies of the new model agree better with experimental results. Therefore, the new model is more general in the sense that it Provides an extra degree of freedom in determining the plant model for control system design. An optimal pole-placement control which combines LQ control and pole-placement technique is applied to the new model. Simulations are provided.
A loose part monitoring system is used to detect unexpected loose parts in a reactor coolant system in a nuclear power plant. It is still necessary to develop a new methodology for the localization and mass estimation of loose parts owing to the high estimation error of conventional methods. In addition, model-based diagnostics recently emphasized the importance of a model describing the behavior of a mechanical system or component. The purpose of this study is to propose a new localization and mass-estimation method based on finite element analysis (FEA) and optimization technique. First, an FEA model to simulate the propagation behavior of the bending wave generated by a metal sphere impact is validated by performing an impact test and a corresponding FEA and optimization for a downsized steam-generator structure. Second, a novel methodology based on FEA and optimization technique was proposed to estimate the impact location and mass of a loose part at the same time. The usefulness of the methodology was then validated through a series of FEAs and some blind tests. A new feature vector, the cross-correlation function, was also proposed to predict the impact location and mass of a loose part, and its usefulness was then validated. It is expected that the proposed methodology can be utilized in model-based diagnostics for the estimation of impact parameters such as the mass, velocity, and impact location of a loose part. In addition, the FEA-based model can be used to optimize the sensor position to improve the collected data quality in the site of nuclear power plants.
For structural damage detection of shear buildings, this paper proposes a new concept using structural element mass-stiffness vector (SEMV) based on special mass and stiffness distribution characteristics. A corresponding damage identification method is developed combining the SEMV with the cross-model cross-mode (CMCM) model updating algorithm. For a shear building, a model is assumed at the beginning based on the building's distribution characteristics. The model is updated into two models corresponding to the healthy and damaged conditions, respectively, using the CMCM method according to the modal parameters of actual structure identified from the measured acceleration signals. Subsequently, the structural SEMV for each condition can be calculated from the updated model using the corresponding stiffness and mass correction factors, and then is utilized to form a new feature vector in which each element is calculated by dividing one element of SEMV in health condition by the corresponding element of SEMV in damage condition. Thus this vector can be viewed as a damage detection feature for its ability to identify the mass or stiffness variation between the healthy and damaged conditions. Finally, a numerical simulation and the laboratory experimental data from a test-bed structure at the Los Alamos National Laboratory were analyzed to verify the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed method. Both simulated and experimental results show that the proposed approach is able to detect the presence of structural mass and stiffness variation and to quantify the level of such changes.

This paper provides a description of the combustion model to obtain an accurate dynamic engine phenomena that satisfies real-time simulation for model-based engine control. The combustion chamber is modeled as a storage device for mass and energy. The combustion process is modeled in terms of a two-zone model for the burned and unburned gas fractions. The mass fraction burnt is modeled in terms of a Wiebe function. The instantaneous net engine torque is calculated from the engine speed and the instantaneous piston work. The modeling accuracy has been tested with a cylinder pressure data on a test bench and also the ability of real-time simulation has been checked. The results show that combustion model yields sufficiently good performance for the model-based control logic design. However the influence factors effected on model accuracy are some room for improvement.
In order to improve the ship maneuverability, It is important to estimate precisely the hydrodynamic coefficients of added mass forces acting on a ship especially in shallow waters, and simple methods for predicting such hydrodynamic forces Is also very desirable. In the previous paper using 3-Dimension potential flow theory, it has been demonstrated that potential calculation is available to estimate added mass coefficients. The present work is aimed at the suggestion of the simplified formulas for predicting the translation and lateral motion of added mass coefficients in shallow water. So, 3-D potential flow theory is also used to calculate the added mass coefficients in deep and shallow waters for Series 60 model which has 5 different kinds of block coefficients (0.6-0.8), SR196 model and T/S HANNARA. After some series computation, simplified formulas for Predicting the added mass force in shallow waters is suggested based on the computation results of Series 60 model. The formulas consist of the combination of principal dimensions and the water depth; d/B, Cb, d/H. The predicted results are compared with the Computation results for SR196 model and T/S HANNARA. The precision of predicted results by simplified formulas are good enough for the practical use. (d/B : draft-Breadth ratio, d/H draft-Water depth ratio, Cb : Block coefficients).
This paper predicts the mass and the length of injection-molded products through the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) method. The ANN was implemented with 5 input parameters and 2 output parameters(mass, length). The input parameters, such as injection time, melt temperature, mold temperature, packing pressure and packing time were selected. 44 experiments that are based on the mixed sampling method were performed to generate training data for the ANN model. The generated training data were normalized to eliminate scale differences between factors to improve the prediction performance of the ANN model. A random search method was used to find the optimized hyper-parameter of the ANN model. After the ANN completed the training, the ANN model predicted the mass and the length of the injection-molded product. According to the result, average error of the ANN for mass was 0.3 %. In the case of length, the average deviation of ANN was 0.043 mm.
Among various mass transfer models to express adsorption rates for any adsorption processes, the linear driving force (LDF) model is used most. The present investigation aims at finding whether this model may be applied to real adsorption process for separation and removal of benzene. Comparison of numerical simulation results calculated by the LDF model with experimental data allowed us to find the mass transfer coefficients that are most appropriate for a specific adsorption process. Various breakthrough curves were obtained from experiments performed at many different temperatures and pressures, which in turn produced suitable mass transfer coefficients. These dependencies of mass transfer coefficient on temperature and pressure were represented by an Arrhenius type- and a power law type empirical equation, respectively.
