  • The present study investigates heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics in a ribbed rotating passage with turning region. The duct has an aspect ratio (W/H) of 0.5 and a hydraulic diameter ($D_h$) of 26.67 mm. Rib turbulators are attached in the cross arrangement on the leading and trailing surfaces of the passage. The ribs have a rectangular cross section of $2\;mm\;(e){\times}\;mm\;(w)$ and an attack angle of $70^{\circ}$. The pitch-to-rib height ratio (p/e) is 7.5, and the rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio ($e/D_h$) is 0.075. The rotation number ranges from 0.0 to 0.20 while the Reynolds number is constant at 10,000. To verify the heat/mass transfer augmentation, internal flow structures are calculated for the same conditions using a commercial code FLUENT 6.1. The heat transfer data of the smooth duct for various Ro numbers agree well with not only the McAdams correlation but also the previous studies. The cross-rib turbulators significantly enhance heat/mass transfer in the passage by disturbing the main flow near the surfaces and generating one asymmetric cell of secondary flow skewing along the ribs. Because the secondary flow is induced in the first-pass and turning region, heat/mass transfer discrepancy is observed in the second-pass even for the stationary case. When the passage rotates, heat/mass transfer and flow phenomena change. Especially, the effect of rotation is more dominant than the effect of the ribs at the higher rotation number in the upstream of the second-pass.

  • An analysis of convective boiling heat transfer for refrigerant mixtures is performed for an annular flow to investigate the degradation of the heat transfer rate. Annular flow is selected in this study because a great portion of the evaporator in the refrigeration and air conditioning system is known to be in the annular flow regime. Mass transfer effect due to composition difference between liquid and vapor is included in this analysis, which is considered to be one of driving forces for the mass transfer at the interface. Due to the concentration gradient at the interface the mass transfer is interfered, so is the evaporative heat transfer at the interface. The mass transfer resistance makes the interface temperature slightly higher and, as a result, the heat transfer coefficients decrease compared with those without mass transfer effects. The degradatioin of the heat transfer rate reaches its maximum at a certain composition. The composition difference between vapor core and vapor at the interface has a direct effect on the temperature difference between the vapor core and the interface and the degradation of the heat transfer rate. Correction factor $C_{F}$ for the mixture effects is added to the correlation for pure substances and the flow boiling heat transfer coefficients can be calculated using the modified equation.n.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of operating condition and ejector geometries on the hydrodynamics and on the mass transfer characteristic of ejector. The CFD results were validated with available experimental data. Flow field analyses and predictions of ejector performance were also carried out. Variation on the operating conditions was made by varying the gas-liquid flow rate ratio in the range of 0.2 to 1.2. The ejector configuration was also varied on the length to diameter ratio of mixing tube ($L_M/D_M$) in the range of 4 to 10. CFD studies show that at $L_M/D_M$ 5.5, the volumetric mass transfer coefficient increases with respect to gas flow rates. Meanwhile, at $L_M/D_M$ 4, the plot of volumetric mass transfer coefficient to gas-liquid flow rates ratio reach maximum at gas-liquid flow rates ratio of 0.6. This study also shows that volumetric mass transfer coefficient decrease with respect to the increase of mixing tube length.

  • Coefficient of performance (COP) for two-stage compression system is investigated in this paper to develop seawater ice machine. The system performance is analyzed with respect to degrees of superheating and subcooling, condensing and evaporating temperatures, compression and mechanical efficiencies and mass flow ratio in an inter-cooler. The main results are summarized as follows : The COP of the system grows when the mass flow ratio, subcooling degree and evaporating temperature edge up. Contrariwise, the system performance descends in case that superheating degree and condensing temperature increase. The most effective factor for the COP is the mass flow rate ratio. Each refrigerant has different limitation for a value of the mass flow ratio in the inter-cooler because of difference in material property.

  • Development of surface heating technology using hot jet impingement onto mold inner surface for improvement of pattern transcription. This study is focused on how to control the parameters related to hot jet impingement. The mass flow rate, the jet temperature and the duration of the impingement are major parameters. The nozzle design and other geometric configurations also affect the heat transfer to the surface. In terms of heat transfer analysis, the most important number is the heat transfer coefficient, which is influenced by the mass flow rate, nozzle design, distance between the nozzle tip and the surface. In summary, several parametric studies using the developed model are conducted to investigate the effects of mass flow rate, jet temperature and Heating Time in Surface heating technology using hot jet impingement onto mold.

  • Effects of combustor-level high free-stream turbulence on the blade-surface heat/mass transfer have been investigated in the three-dimensional flow region near the endwall within a high-turning turbine rotor cascade passage. Free-stream turbulence intensity and integral length scale in the high turbulence case are 14.7 percents and 80 mm, respectively. The result shows that there is no considerable discrepancy in the blade heat/mass transfer near the endwall between the low and high turbulence cases. As departing from the endwall, however, the deviation between the two cases becomes larger, particularly in the region where flow separation and re-attachment occur. Under the high turbulence, flow disturbances such as boundary-layer separation and re-attachment seem to be suppressed, which makes the blade heat/mass transfer more uniform. Moreover, there are some evidences that endwall vortices tend to be weakened under the high turbulence.

  • The objective of the present study is to investigate the effect of experimental parameters on the hydrodynamic characteristics in a horizontal tee-type evaporator using R-22. The experimental apparatus consisted of an unheated tee-type test section, a liquid-vapor separator, a preheated, mass flow meters, a plate heat exchanger, pump, and other measurement devices. The experimental parameters were mass flux(500 and 600kg/$m^2$s), inlet quality(0.1~0.3) and separation ratio(0.3~0.7). Absolute pressure at the inlet of the test section was 0.652 MPa. The branch-to-inlet inner diameter ratio was 0.61. Pressure gradient at the branch section was larger than that at the run section at the same separation ratio. Pressure drop per unit length increased at the run section and decreased at the branch section as the separation ratio increased. Pressure drop predicted by the separated flow model agreed with experimental data within -35 to +16%. Generally, predicted values showed similar trend with the data. Mass flow ratio of vapor refrigerant was affected by the inlet quality more than the mass flux.

  • Direct Numerical Simulation(DNS) of turbulent mass transfer in fully developed turbulent pipe flow has been performed to study the effect of wall boundary conditions on the concentration fields at $Re_{\tau}$=180 based on friction velocity and pipe radius. Fully developed turbulent pipe flows for Sc=0.71 are studied with two different wall boundary conditions, namely, constant mass flux and constant wall concentration. The mean concentration profiles and turbulent mass fluxes obtained from the present DNS are in good agreement with the previous numerical results currently available. To investigate the effects of wall boundary condition on the turbulent mass transfer, the mean concentration profile, root-mean-square of concentration fluctuation, turbulent mass fluxes and higher-order statistics(Skewness and Flatness factor) are compared for the two cases. Furthermore, the budgets of turbulent mass fluxes and concentration variance were computed and analyzed to elucidate the effects of wall boundary conditions on the turbulent mass transfer.

  • Large Eddy Simulation(LES) of turbulent mass transfer in fully developed turbulent pipe flow has been performed to study the effect of Reynolds number on the concentration fields at $Re_{\tau}=180$, 395, 590 based on friction velocity and pipe radius. Dynamic subgrid-scale models for the turbulent subgrid-scale stresses and mass fluxes were employed to close the governing equations. Fully developed turbulent pipe flows with constant mass flux imposed at the wall are studied for Sc=0.71. The mean concentration profiles and turbulent intensities obtained from the present LES are in good agreement with the previous numerical and experimental results currently available. The effects of Reynolds number on the turbulent mass transfer are identified in the higher-order statistics(Skewness and Flatness factor) and instantaneous concentration fields. The budgets of turbulent mass fluxes and concentration variance were computed and analyzed to elucidate the effect of Reynolds number on turbulent mass transfer. Furthermore, to understand the correlation between near-wall turbulence structure and concentration fluctuation, we present an octant analysis in the vicinity of the pipe wall.
