$^{14}$C uptake experiments were carried out in and around the cold water mass in the southern part of the Korean East Sea in August and October 1995 to assess spatial and seasonal variability of primary productivity and its relation to physical and chemical factors. The cold and high saline water mass in the bottom layer extended upward to the surface layer and developed along the eastern coast of Korea in August. Chlorophyll-a concentration was maintained high in the cold water mass through August to October and its maximum concentration was 6.3 ${\mu}$g 1$^{-1}$ at Stn. 209-4 in August. Primary productivity and daily primary productivity ranged from 0.29 to 8.02 mgC m$^{-3}$ hr$^{-1}$ and from 58.3 to 63.1 mgC m$^{-2}$ d$^{-1}$, respectively, throughout the study period. Primary productivity of the cold water mass was higher than that of offshore waters in both summer and autumn seasons. P$_{max}$ and I$_{max}$ of the cold water mass in August were higher than those in October, except Stn. 208-5. These results suggest that high primary productivity in the cold water mass may be established by the upwelled nutrients and light adaptaion to convected phytoplankton due to upwelling of the bottom waters.

In order to predict the indoor air pollutant, the VOCs emission rate is used through small chamber in the design process. However, the small chamber method has limitations as the convective mass transfer coefficient, the most important factor when predicting VOCs contamination of indoor air, is different between the small chamber result and the measured data in the actual building. Furthermore, the existing studies which analyzed mass transfer coefficient in the small chamber were directed on the small chambers developed at the time and FLEC(Field and Laboratory Emission Cell), thus, are different from the current small chamber which has been changed with improvements. The purpose of this study is to determine the emission rate of pollutant in multi-layered building materials, and predict the indoor pollutant concentration through the CFD(Computational of Fluid Dynamics) and CRIAQ2 based on the mass transfer coefficient on singled-layered building material by using the current small chamber widely used in Korea. Futhermore, this study used the new convective mass transfer coefficient(hm') which indicates the existing convective mass transfer coefficient(hm) including VOC partition coefficient(k). Also, formaldehyde was selected as target pollutant.

Gyeongju, which was the central city of the ancient civilization at Silla Kingdom, has various kinds of stone cultural properties. It is significantly important to preserve historical sources of Korea. However, recent air quality data measured in Gyeongju did not show good air quality level. In order to investigate variation of the concentration of the air pollutants with meteorological condition, an air quality monitoring and an aerosol sampling were conducted during the intensive monitoring period in Gyeongju. Impacts of the meteorological factors on the air pollutants were also analyzed based on the air mass pathway categories using HYSPLIT model and the local wind patterns using MM5 model. The prevailing air mass pathways were classified into four categories as following; category I affected by easterly marine aerosols, category II affected by northwesterly continental aerosols, category III affected by southwesterly continental aerosols, and category IV affected by northerly continental aerosols. The concentrations of the air quality standards were relatively lower during the fall intensive monitoring period. At that time, the easterly marine air mass pattern was dominated. The seasonal average mass concentration of $PM_{10,Opt}$, which optically measured at the monitoring site, was the highest value of $77.6{\pm}28.3\;{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$ during the spring intensive monitoring period but the lowest value of $20.1{\pm}5.3\;{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$ during the fall intensive monitoring period. The concentrations of $SO_2$ and CO were relatively higher when the air mass came from the northwestern continent or the northern continent. The concentrations of ${SO_4}^{2-}$ and ${NO_3}^-$ increased under the northwesterly continental condition. It was estimated that the acidic aerosols were dominated in the atmosphere of Gyeongju when the air mass came from the continental regions.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the concentrations of particulate matter generated during coffee roasting and to study various factors affecting the concentrations. Methods: Differences in concentration levels were investigated based on various factors to understand the emission rates of particulate matter over time and to compare the mass and number concentrations according to their size. Sampling was performed in closed laboratories without the operation of air conditioning or ventilation. Optical Particle Sizer(OPS) was used as a measuring device. An OPS measures using a light-scattering method. Sampling was performed for sixty minutes at one-minute intervals. The background concentration was measured for about 30 minutes before starting of coffee roasting. The concentrations of particulate matter generated during coffee roasting were monitored until roasted coffee beans were removed from the roaster and cooled down. Several factors affecting the concentrations of particulate matter were investigated, which includes the origins of green beans, the roasting level, and the input amount of green beans. Results: The results of this study may be summarized as follows: 1) There was no difference in particulate matter concentration levels by the origin of the green beans, but a statistically significant difference in concentration levels by roasting level and the input amount of green beans; The higher the roasting level, the higher was the particulate matter concentration. The more green beans we put in the roaster, the higher were the concentrations; 2) The PM10 mass concentrations increased over time. The average concentration after roasting was higher than the average concentration during roasting; 3) In the distribution of mass and number concentration by particle diameter, the majority of particles was below 2.5 ㎛. Conclusions: Persons who work in roastery cafes can be exposed to high concentrations of particulate matter. Therefore, personal exposure and risk assessment should be conducted for roastery cafe workers.
Soot particles emitted from combustion processes are often coated by non-absorbing organic materials, which enhance the global warming effect of soot particles. It is of importance to study the condensation characteristics of soot particles experimentally and theoretically to reduce the uncertainty of the climate impact of soot particles. In this study, the condensational growth of soot particles in a tubular coater was modeled by a one-dimensional (1D) plug flow model and a two-dimensional (2D) laminar flow model. The effects of 2D heat and mass transports on the predicted particle growth were investigated. The temperature and coating material vapor concentration distributions in radial direction, which the 1D model could not accounted for, affected substantially the particle growth in the coater. Under the simulated conditions, the differences between the temperatures and vapor concentrations near the wall and at the tube center were large. The neglect of these variations by the 1D model resulted in a large error in modeling the mass transfer and aerosol dynamics occurring in the coater. The 1D model predicted the average temperature and vapor concentration quite accurately but overestimated the average diameter of the growing particles considerably. At the outermost grid, at which condensation begins earliest due to the lowest temperature and saturation vapor concentration, condensing vapor was exhausted rapidly because of the competition between condensations on the wall and on the particle surface, decreasing the growth rate. At the center of the tube, on the other hand, the growth rate was low due to high temperature and saturation vapor concentration. The effects of Brownian diffusion and thermophoresis were not high enough to transport the coating material vapor quickly from the tube center to the wall. The 1D model based on perfect radial mixing could not take into account this phenomenon, resulting in a much higher growth rate than what the 2D model predicted. The result of this study indicates that contrary to a previous report for a thermodenuder, 2D heat and mass transports must be taken into account to model accurately the condensational particle growth in a coater.
The ambient mass concentration and chemical composition of the $PM_{2.5}$ were determined at the highland site with 1,100 m above sea level on Jeju Island from June 2013 to November 2014. Yearly averaged mass concentration of $PM_{2.5}$ was $11.97{\pm}8.63{\mu}g/m^3$. $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations were highest during the spring, while they tended to be lowest during the summer. Eight water soluble ionic species attributed 45.5% to $PM_{2.5}$ mass. $SO{_4}^{2-}$, $NO_3{^-}$ and $NH_4{^+}$ were major ions, which occupied to 27.9%, 3.7% and 12.3%, respectively. The greatest contributors to total mass concentration of water-soluble ions contained in $PM_{2.5}$ were sulfate, ammonium and nitrate. These three ions accounted for 96.6% in total ions mass concentration of $PM_{2.5}$. We could infer that these three secondary ions exist mostly in the form of $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ and $NH_4NO_3$. $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ had a good relationship and with r=0.9. The molar ratio of $Mg^{2+}/Ca^{2+}$ in this study was lower than the value observed in sea water and higher than that in soil dust, indicating that these two ions originated from other sources rather than ocean and soil dust in this study.
Numerical calculation has been performed to investigate the fluid flow, heat transfer and local mass fraction of chemical species in the MOCVD(metalorganic chemical vapor deposition) manufacturing process. The mixing of reactants (trimethylgallium with hydrogen gas and ammonia) was presented by the concentration of each reactant to predict the uniformity of film growth. Effects of inlet size, location, mass flow rate and susceptor/cold wall tilt angle on the concentration were reported. From the numerical calculation, the concentration of reactants could be qualitatively predicted by the Nusselt number(heat transfer) and the optimum mass flow rate, wall tilt angle and inlet condition were considered.

Cadmium (Cd) adsorption onto the activated carbon containing hydroxyapatite (HAP) was investigated in batch experiments and response surface methodology (RSM) using the Box-Behnken methods were applied to the experimental results. Cd adsorption with different HAP mass ratio of from 10% to 30%. With more HAP, Cd was more adsorbed. These results suggest that the higher HAP mass causes an increase of the ion exchange potential of the HAP sorbent. Equilibrium experimental results from Cd adsorption was fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Cd adsorption on HAP sorbent were found to follow the Freundlich isotherm model well in the initial adsorbate concentration range. Also, Cd adsorption was a function of the HAP mass ratio ($x_1$), initial Cd concentration ($x_2$), and initial pH ($x_3$) from the application of the RSM. Statistical results showed the order of significance of the independent variables to be initial Cd concentration > HAP mass ratio > initial pH.
Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry(SIMS) is an analytical method that measures the distribution and concentration of elements or compounds by analyzing the mass of secondary ions released by irradiating ion beams with energy of hundreds eV to 20 keV on the sample surface. Unlike other similar analytical instruments, SIMS directly detect the elemental ions that constitute a sample, allowing you to accurately identify components and obtain concentration information in the depth direction. It is also a great feature for measuring isotopes and analyzing light elements, especially hydrogen. In particular, with the development of materials science, there is an increasing demand for trace concentration analysis and isotope measurements in the micro-regions of various materials. SIMS has a short history compared to other similar methods; nevertheless, SIMS is still advancing in hardware and is expected to contribute to the development of materials science through research and development of advanced analytical techniques.
Xanthan gum is a biopolymer produced by Xanthomonas campestris. In xanthan gum fermentation, the fermentation broth changes to highly viscous non-Newtonian fluid as xanthan gum concentration increases. Maximum xanthan gum concentration is limited by high viscosity of the broth since mass transfers of nutrient and oxygen are inhibited. Int this study the mass transfer effects were investigated in batch and fed-batch fermentations at various agitation speeds and by separate oxygen transfer experiments. Xanthan gum production rate was observed to be largely dependent on oxygen transfer coefficient; while cell growth rate was not affected highly by this factor.
