Experiments of shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction were conducted by using a supersonic wind tunnel. Nominal Mach number was varied in the range of 1.6 to 3.0 by means of different nozzles. The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of boundary layer flow bleed on the interaction flow field in a straight tube. Two-dimensional slits were installed on the tube walls to bleed the turbulent boundary layer flows. The bleed flows were measured by an orifice. The ratio of the bleed mass flow to main mass flow was controlled within the range of 11 per cent. The wall pressures were measured by the flush mounted transducers and Schlieren optical observations were made for almost all of the experiments. The results show that the boundary layer flow bleed reduces the multiple shock waves to a strong normal shock wave. For the design Mach number of 1.6, it was found that the normal shock wave at the position of the silt was resulted from the main flow choking due to the suction of the boundary layer flow.
It is important to completely understand heat/mass transfer from a flat plate because it is a basic element of heat/mass transfer. In the present study, local heat/mass transfer coefficient is obtained for two flow conditions to investigate the effect of boundary layer using the naphthalene sublimation technique. Obtained local heat/mass transfer coefficient is converted to dimensionless parameters such as Sherwood number, Stanton number and Colburn j-factor. These also are compared with correlations of laminar and turbulent heat/mass transfer from a flat plate. According to experimental results, local Sherwood number and local Stanton number are in much better agreement with the correlation of turbulent region rather than laminar region, which means analogy between heat/mass transfer and momentum transfer is more suitable for turbulent boundary layer. But average Sherwood number and average Colburn j-factor representing analogy between heat/mass transfer and momentum transfer are consistent with the correlation of laminar boundary layer as well as turbulent boundary layer.

Experiments of shock-wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction were conducted by using a supersonic wind tunnel. Nominal Mach number was varied in the range of 1.6 to 3.0 by means of different nozzles. The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of boundary layer suction on normal shock-wave oscillations caused by shock wave/boundary layer interaction in a straight duct. Two-dimensional slits were installed on the top and bottom walls of the duct to bleed turbulent boundary layer flows. The bleed flows were measured by an orifice. The ratio of the bleed mass flow to main mass flow was controlled below the range of 11 per cent. Time-mean and fluctuating wall pressures were measured, and Schlieren optical observations were made to investigate time-mean flow field. Time variations in the shock wave displacement were obtained by a high-speed camera system. The results show that boundary layer suction by slits considerably reduce shock-wave oscillations. For the design Mach number of 2.3, the maximum amplitude of the oscillating shock-wave reduces by about 75% compared with the case of no slit for boundary layer suction.

An active flow control technique using blowing and distributed suction on low Reynolds airfoil is investigated. Simultaneous blowing and distributed suction can recirculate the jet flow mass, and reduce the penalty to propulsion system due to avoiding dumping the jet mass flow. Energy is injected into main flow by blowing on the suction surface, and the low energy boundary flow mass is removed by distributed suction, thus the flow separation can be successfully suppressed. Aerodynamic lift to drag ratio is improved significantly using the flow control technique, and the energy consumption is quite low.

When analyzing containment thermal-hydraulics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a powerful tool because multi-dimensional and local analysis is required for some accident scenarios. According to the previous study, neglecting steam bulk condensation in the CFD analysis leads to a significant error in boundary layer profiles. Validating the condensation model requires the experimental data near the condensing surface, however, available boundary layer data is quite limited. It is also important to confirm whether the heat and mass transfer analogy (HMTA) is still valid in the presence of bulk condensation. In this study, the boundary layer measurements on the vertical condensing surface in the presence of air were performed with the rectangular channel facility WINCS, which was designed to measure the velocity, temperature, and concentration boundary layers. We set the laminar flow condition and varied the Richardson number (1.0-23) and the steam volume fraction (0.35-0.57). The experimental results were used to validate CFD analysis and HMTA models. For the former, we implemented a bulk condensation model assuming local thermal equilibrium into the CFD code and confirmed its validity. For the latter, we validated the HMTA-based correlations, confirming that the mixed convection correlation reasonably predicted the sum of wall and bulk condensation rates.
The present paper deals with accuracy improvement of a bleed boundary condition model used to improve the performance of supersonic inlets. In order to accurately predict the amount of bleed mass flow rates, this study performs a scaling of sonic flow coefficient data for 90-degree bleed holes in consideration of Prandtl-Meyer expansion theory. Furthermore, it is assumed that porosity varies with stream-wise location of the porous bleed plate to accurately predict downstream boundary layer profiles. The bleed boundary condition model is demonstrated through Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) simulations of bleed flows on a flat plate with/without an oblique shock. As a result, the bleed model shows the improved accuracy of bleed mass rates and downstream boundary layer profiles.

Numerical study of the influence of the boundary layer of micro-supersonic jet impinging on a flat plate with a hole was performed, to investigate the role of gas jet to eject melted materials from the cut zone in the laser machining. The detailed shock structures and the information of the mass flow rate through the hole were compared to the results of the previous study, in which the effects of boundary layer inside nozzle was not accounted. It was found that the boundary layer inside the micro- nozzle introduced stronger Mach disc over the machining zone, and thus that the mass flow rate through the hole decreased.

A Compuressible turbulent boundary layer effect of the high temperature, accelerating gas flow through the De-Laval nozzle on combustion chamber pressure is numerically investigated. For this purpose, the coupled momentum integral equation and energy integral equation are solved by the Bartz method, and 1/7 power law for both the turbulent boundary layer velocity distribution and temperature distribution is assumed. As far as the boundary layer thicknesses are concerned, we can obtain reasonable solutions even if relatively simple approximations to the skin friction coefficient and stanton number have been used. The effects of nozzle wall cooling and/or mass flow rate on the boundary layer thicknesses and the combustion chamber pressure are studied. Specifically, negative displacement thickness is appeared as the ratio of the nozzle wall temperature to the stagnation temperature of the free stream decreases, and, consequently, it makes the combustion chamber pressure low.

The purpose of this research is to investigate how the boundary layer separation caused by a tripping wire installed in front of the flat plate affects the transition from laminar to turbulent flow, and consequently mass transfer. A naphthalene sublimation technique is used to measure the local mass transfer coefficients on the flat plate, and two boundary conditions for the developed and developing flow are considered to evaluate the effects of the flow boundary. The local mass transfer data for a flat plate with a tripping wire are compared with the data for a flat plate without a tripping wire. The variation trends of the local heat transfer coefficients for the plates with and without the tripping wire are similar to each other in the case of the developing flow, but are quite different for the developed flow. The average Sherwood number for the flat plate with a tripping wire is much higher than that without a tripping wire because of the boundary layer separation.
A numerical model is constructed to simulate the interactions of oblique shock wave / turbulent boundary layer on a strongly heated wall. The heated wall temperature is two times higher than the adiabatic wall temperature and the shock wave is strong enough to induce boundary layer separation. The numerical diffusion in the finite volume method is reduced by the use of a higher order convection scheme(UMIST scheme) which is a TVD version of QUICK scheme. The turbulence model is Chen-Kim two time scale model. The comparison of the wall pressure distribution with the experimental data ensures the validity of this numerical model. The effect of strong wall heating enlarges the separation region upstream and downstream. In order to eliminate the separation, wall suction is applied at the shock foot position. The bleeding slot width is about same as the upstream boundary layer thickness and suction mass flow is 10% of the flow rate in the upstream boundary layer. The final configuration of the shock reflection pattern and the wall pressure distribution approach to the non-viscous value when wall suction is applied.
