Air-conditioners use a spirally coiled capillary tube as an expansion device to enhance compactness of the unit. However, most empirical correlations in open literature were developed for straight capillary tubes without considering coiled effects on the mass flow rate. The objectives of this study are to investigate the flow characteristics of coiled capillary tubes and to develop a generalized correlation for mass flow rate through coiled capillary tubes. The mass flow rates through the coiled capillary tubes and straight capillary tubes were measured by varying operating conditions and tube geometry. The condensing temperatures varied at 40.5, 47.5 and $54.5^{\circ}C$, and subcoolings altered at 3.5, 6.5 and $11.5^{\circ}C$. The mass flow rates of the coiled capillary tubes decreased by 5 to 16% compared with those of the straight capillary tubes at the same operating conditions. An empirical correlation was developed by introducing equivalent length of capillary tube with non-dimensional parameters for coiled shape. The present correlation predicts the data with average and standard deviations of 0.33% and 3.24%, respectively.
Gas sparging is one of the techniques used to control the concentration polarization during ultrafiltration. In this work, the effects of gas sparging in stratified flow regime were investigated during gel layer controlling cross flow ultrafiltration in a rectangular channel. Synthetic solution of pectin was used as the gel forming solute. The liquid and gas flow rates were selected such that a stratified flow regime was prevalent in the channel. A mass transfer model was developed for this system to quantify the effects of gas flow rates on mass transfer coefficient (Sherwood number). The results were compared with the case of no gas sparging. Gas sparging led to an increase of mass transfer coefficient by about 23% in this case. The limitation of the developed model was also evaluated and it was observed that beyond a gas flow rate of 20 l/h, the model was unable to explain the experimental observation, i.e., the decrease in permeate flux with flow rate.

Fin-tube evaporator for carbon dioxide has been investigated both by experiment and simulation. Inside refrigerant heat transfer and outside heat and mass transfer of a wet surface heat exchanger were modeled using appropriate correlations. The results estimated by the calculation were in good agreement with the experimental results. The simulation errors were less than 7.9% for estimating capacity, 0.6$^{\circ}C$ for air exit temperature, 1.2% for air exit humidity and 17% for $CO_2$ exit pressure. The simulation program was used to study the effect of air flow direction, number of rows and refrigerant circuits. For a 2-row evaporator, parallel flow showed better performance for low air velocity but for high air velocity, counter-flow was better. Refrigerant circuits, however, showed insignificant effect on the performance.

High water vapour content in air can cause a number of problems as for human or surrounding materials. For human a high water vapour can create physiological stress, discomfort, and also can encourage ill health. While, the cause for the environment is can accelerate the corrosion of metals, accelerate the growth of spores and mould, can reduce the electrical resistance of insulators and etc. Desiccant systems have been proposed as energy saving alternatives to vapor compression air conditioning for handling especially the latent load and also sensible load. Use of liquid desiccants offers several design and performance advantages over solid desiccants, especially when solar energy is used for regeneration. The liquid desiccants contact the gas inside the packed tower of liquid desiccant solar cooling system and the heat transfer and mass transfer will occur. This thesis is trying to study the characteristics inside the packed tower of dehumidifier systems. This characteristics consist of mass transfer rate, heat transfers rate, human comfort and energy that consume by the system. Those characteristics were affected by air flow rates, air temperature and humidity, and desiccant temperature and all that variation will influence the performance of the systems. The results of this thesis later on can be used to determine the best performance of the systems.

This paper describes experimental investigations of helium-air exchange flows through parti¬tioned opening and two-opening. Such exchange flows may occur following rupture accident of stand pipe in high temperature gas cooled reactor. A test vessel with the two types of small open¬ing on top of test cylinder is used for experiments. An estimation method of mass increment is developed and applied to measure the exchange flow rate. A technique of flow visualization by Mach-Zehnder interferometer is provided to recognize the exchange flows. In the case of exchange flow through the partitioned opening, flow passages of upward flow of the helium and downward flow of the air within the opening are separated by vertical partition, and the two flows interact out of entrance and exit of the opening. Therefore, an experiment of the exchange flow through two-opening is made to investigate effect of the fluids interaction of the partitioned opening sys¬tem. As a result of comparison of the exchange flow rates between the two types of the opening system, it is found that the exchange flow rate of the two-opening system is larger than that of the partitioned opening system due to absence of the effect of fluids interaction. Finally, the fluids interaction between the upward and downward flows through the partitioned opening is found to be an important factor on the helium-air exchange flow.
This paper discusses hydrodynamic characteristics of cold circulating fluidized bed(CFB) in different solid mass inventories. Operating parameters of solid mass inventory, primary air and J-valve fluidizing air were varied to find out the effect on the flow fludization pattern. Experimental measurements were made in a 3m tall CFB that has 0.05m riser diameter and black silica-carbonate of particle sizes from $100{\mu}m$ to $500{\mu}m$ were employed as the bed material. The operating conditions of superficial gas velocity and J-valve fluidizing velocity were in the ranges of 1.39~3.24 m/s and 0.139~0.232 m/s respectively. The axial solid fraction and solid circulation rate of CFB were observed and compared with modelling through IEA-CFBC Model and commercial CFD code.

In this study, a modified reverse flow type, one of the triple effect absorption cycles, is studied for performance improvement. The cycle simulation is carried out by using EES(Engineering Equation Solver) program for the working fluid of $H_2O/LiBr$ solution. The split-ratios of solution flow rate, UA of each component, pumping mass flow rate of solution are considered as key parameters. The results show that the optimal SRH (split ratio of high side) and SRL (split ratio of low side) values are 0.596 and 0.521, respectively. Under these conditions, the COP is maximized to 2.1. The optimal pumping mass flow rate is selected as 3 kg/s and the corresponding UAEV A is 121 kW/K in the present system. The present simulation results are compared to the other literature results from Kaita's (2002) and Cho's (1998) triple effect absorption systems. The present system has a lower solution temperature and a higher COP than the Kaita's modified reverse flow, and it also gives a higher COP than the Cho's parallel flow by adjusting split ratios.

The present study is directed at flow and heat transfer of $CO_2$ and oil mixtures in a circular tube. PAG and POE oils are considered in this study. Flow characteristics of $CO_2$ and oil mixtures have been investigated by flow visualization. Pressure drop has been measured in the range of operating mass flow rate from 0.1 to 0.4 kg/min in a circular tube. Heat transfer characteristics of $CO_2$/oil mixtures have been investigated using a counterflow heat exchanger. In case of pure liquid $CO_2$ as well as $CO_2$ and POE mixtures, flow are seen to be uniform so that $CO_2$ and POE oil are still miscible even at flowing state. However, it is found that $CO_2$ and PAG are not miscible. Pressure drop of $CO_2$/PAG mixtures are much higher than that of $CO_2$/POE mixtures as well as pure $CO_2$ at a fixed mass flow rate. As the concentration of POE oil is increased from 0 to 5 wt%, pressure drop is increased. However, heat transfer rate and heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$/POE mixtures are much higher than that of $CO_2$/PAG mixtures. The f-factor correlation and Nusselt number correlation for $CO_2$/POE oil mixtures are suggested in this paper.
Passenger safety is one of the most important considerations in the purchase of an automobile. A curtain-type air bag is increasingly adapted in deluxe cars for protecting passengers from the danger of side clash. Inflator housing is a main part of the curtain-type air bag system for supplying high-pressure gases to pump up the air bag-curtain. Although the inflator housing is fundamental in designing a curtain-type air bag system, flow information on the inflator housing is very limited. In this study, we measured instantaneous velocity fields of a high-speed flow ejecting from the inflator housing using a dynamic PIV system. From the velocity field data measured at a high frame-rate, we evaluated the variation of the mass flow rate with time. From the instantaneous velocity fields of flow ejecting from the airbag inflator housing in the initial stage, we can see a flow pattern of broken shock wave front and its downward propagation. The flow ejecting from the inflator housing was found to have large velocity fluctuations and the maximum velocity was about 700m/s. The velocity of high-speed flow was decreased rapidly and the duration of high-speed flow over 400m/s was maintained only to 30ms. After 100ms, there was no perceptible flow.
