The Hearing Ability of Coralfish Chromis notatus to Low Frequency Sound 2. The Auditory Critical Ratio and Hearing Index (저주파음에 의한 자리돔의 청각 능력 2. 청각 임계비 및 청각능력지수)

  • In order to obtain the fundamental data on the auditory thresholds of fishes for catching method using low frequency sound, the auditory thresholds of coralfish Chromis notatus were measured in the presence of masking noise in the spectrum level range of 73~83dB re l$\mu$Pa/√Hz by heartbeat conditioning technique using pure tones coupled with a delayed electric shock. Critical ratios were about 23~41dB at measurement frequency, The critical ratio increased almost linearly with increasing frequency from 500Hz. The noise spectrum level at the start of masking was about 60~65dB. This suggests that hearing of coralfish is masked in the natural environment with the noise spectrum level above 60dB. The sound pressure level of which the signal sound of 300Hz is recognized by coralfish under the ambient noise is above 88dB and the critical ratio of them is above 23dB. The hearing index of coralfish with ambient noise was 81.

A Study of the noise level in hospital and the Count-Measure against the noise (병실내 소음도와 환자와의 관계)

  • In this study noise source in a ward at four general hospitals in Seoul area has been investigated and analysed. The degree of reaction against noise by 171 randomly has also been examined. The results of the study have shown that the source of noise is the speakers of wired broadcasting or from visiting guests in two hospitals located in residential area. The patients at the two other hospitals located at commercial site have been suffered more from traffic noise. However, because of their separated living at hospital from their ordinary houselife, sixty one percent of the inpatients have wished a music sound of around 60 dB (A). After having considered the results of the investigation and wishes of the inpatients, following suggestions have been made: 1. Reduce the number of guests or their length of stay. 2. Wired broadcasting system should be substitued by wireless one, or if it's unavoidable, it should be used in office rooms only. 3. Since the stops and starts of vehicles induce much noise, Seoul City Government be requested to prepare an appropriate administrative measure for the vehicles around hospital area and it should prevent the establishment of new hospitals along high way site. 4. By using earphone, inpatients can choose a wireless channel according to each individual's taste. This through the masking effect, would cover up the noise source. 5. Rooms along the streets should be utilized as offices, otherwise double windows should be set up for inpatient's wards.

Operational Ship Monitoring Based on Integrated Analysis of KOMPSAT-5 SAR and AIS Data (Kompsat-5 SAR와 AIS 자료 통합분석 기반 운영레벨 선박탐지 모니터링)

  • The possibility of ship detection monitoring at operational level using KOMPSAT-5 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Automatic Identification System (AIS) data is investigated. For the analysis, the KOMPSAT-5 SLC images, which are collected from the west coast of Shinjin port and the northern coast of Jeju port are used along with portable AIS data from near the coast. The ship detection algorithm based on HVAS (Human Visual Attention System) was applied, which has significant advantages in terms of detection speed and accuracy compared to the commonly used CFAR (Constant False Alarm Rate). As a result of the integrated analysis, the ship detection from KOMPSAT-5 and AIS were generally consistent except for small vessels. Some ships detected in KOMPSAT-5 but not in AIS are due to the data absence from AIS, while it is clearly visible in KOMPSAT-5. Meanwhile, SAR imagery also has some false alarms due to ship wakes, ghost effect, and DEM error (or satellite orbit error) during object masking in land. Improving the developed ship detection algorithm and collecting reliable AIS data will contribute for building wide integrated surveillance system of marine territory at operational level.

Effects of Deodorizing Plant Products on the Odor and Fermentation Characteristics of Kimchi (소취식물이 김치 냄새특성 및 발효성에 미치는 영향)

  • The use of deodorizing plant products such as persimmon leaves, pine needles and fennel seeds to mask the characteristic odor of kimchi has been proposed. Therefore, in this study, the effect of deodorizing plants on kimchi fermentation and the profile of volatile flavor compounds was investigated. During sensory evaluation tests of sour and fermentation odors of kimchi, plant extract-added kimchi showed higher sensory scores than chopped plant-added kimchi. Additionally, kimchi containing pine needle extracts (0.3-0.6%) and fennel seed extracts (0.05-0.1%) showed higher sensory scores than untreated kimchi. In addition, pine needle extract and fennel seed extract had a significant influence on kimchi fermentation characteristics such as pH, total acidity and the concentration of lactic acid bacteria. The volatile flavor compounds of kimchi and deodorizing plant extracts were also analyzed using GC/MS and the correlation of volatile flavor compounds in kimchi, plant extracts and plant-added kimchi was examined. The results revealed that the sour and fermentation odors of kimchi were reduced using deodorizing plant extracts by changing the kimchi fermentation characteristics.

A Fundamental Study on the Auditory Characteristics of Amberjack Seriola dumerili in the Coast of Jeju Island (제주 연안산 잿방어의 청각특성에 관한 기초적 연구)

  • In this paper, We examined auditory threshold and critical ratio of amberjack seriola dumerili, in the Jeju Island coastal waters, to find out hearing ability of the fish. The auditory threshold level, critical ratio and hearing index of amberjack were determinded by conditioning method using a sound coupled with electric shock in the condition of ambient noise or white noise in an experimental water tank. The audio-signals of pure tone and electric shock were from 80 HZ to 800 Hz and DC 7 V, respectively. Values for the critical ratios were calculated in terms of the masked thresholds using the noise projected to stable spectrum levels at all measurement frequencies of background noise. Masking noises were in the spectrum level range of 65 dB∼75 dB $(re 1{\mu}Pa\sqrt{Hz})$. The auditory thresholds of amberjack within the test the frequencies were most sensitive at 300HZ as 94.5 dB. The critical ratios of fishes ranged from 36.4 to 52.8 dB. The noise spectrum level that started masking was about 58∼72 dB within frequencies.

Density-based Topology Design Optimization of Piezoelectric Crystal Resonators (압전 수정진동자의 밀도법 기반 위상 최적설계)

  • Design sensitivity analysis and topology design optimization for a piezoelectric crystal resonator are developed. The piezoelectric crystal resonator is deformed mechanically when subjected to electric charge on the electrodes, or vice versa. The Mindlin plate theory with higher-order interpolations along thickness direction is employed for analyzing the thickness-shear vibrations of the crystal resonator. Thin electrode plates are masked on the top and bottom layers of the crystal plate in order to enforce to vibrate it or detect electric signals. Although the electrode is very thin, its weight and shape could change the performance of the resonators. Thus, the design variables are the bulk material densities corresponding to the mass of masking electrode plates. An optimization problem is formulated to find the optimal topology of electrodes, maximizing the thickness-shear contribution of strain energy at the desired motion and restricting the allowable volume and area of masking plates. The necessary design gradients for the thickness-shear frequency(eigenvalue) and the corresponding mode shape(eigenvector) are computed very efficiently and accurately using the analytical design sensitivity analysis method using the eigenvector expansion concept. Through some demonstrative numerical examples, the design sensitivity analysis method is verified to be very efficient and accurate by comparing with the finite difference method. It is also observed that the optimal electrode design yields an improved mode shape and thickness-shear energy.

Side Channel Analysis with Low Complexity in the Diffusion Layer of Block Cipher Algorithm SEED (SEED 블록 암호 알고리즘 확산계층에서 낮은 복잡도를 갖는 부채널 분석)

  • When the availability of embedded device is considered, combined countermeasure such as first-order masking and hiding countermeasures is quite attractive because the security and efficiency can be provided at the same time. Especially, combined countermeasure can be applied to the confusion and diffusion layers of the first and last rounds in order to provide the efficiency. Also, the middle rounds only employs first-order masking countermeasure or no countermeasure. In this paper, we suggest a novel side channel analysis with low complexity in the output of diffusion layer. In general, the attack target cannot be set to the output of diffusion layer owing to the high complexity. When the diffusion layer of block cipher is composed of AND operations, we show that the attack complexity can be reduced. Here, we consider that the main algorithm is SEED. Then, the attack complexity with $2^{32}$ can be reduced by $2^{16}$ according to the fact that the correlation between the combination of S-box outputs and that of the outputs of diffusion layer. Moreover, compared to the fact that the main target is the output of S-box in general, we demonstrate that the required number of traces can be reduced by 43~98% in terms of simulated traces. Additionally, we show that only 8,000 traces are enough to retrieve the correct key by suggested scheme, although it fails to reveal the correct key when performing the general approach on 100,000 traces in realistic device.

An Approach for the Antarctic Polar Front Detection and an Analysis for itsVariability (남극 극 전선 탐지를 위한 접근법과 변동성에 대한 연구)

  • In order to detect the Antarctic Polar Front (PF) among the main fronts in the Southern Ocean, this study is based on the combinations of satellite-based sea surface temperature (SST) and height (SSH) observations. For accurate PF detection, we classified the signals as front or non-front grids based on the Bayesian decision theory from daily SST and SSH datasets, and then spatio-temporal synthesis has been performed to remove primary noises and to supplement geographical connectivity of the front grids. In addition, sea ice and coastal masking were employed in order to remove the noise that still remains even after performing the processes and morphology operations. Finally, we selected only the southernmost grids, which can be considered as fronts and determined as the monthly PF by a linear smoothing spline optimization method. The mean positions of PF in this study are very similar to those of the PFs reported by the previous studies, and it is likely to be well represents PF formation along the bottom topography known as one of the major influences of the PF maintenance. The seasonal variation in the positions of PF is high in the Ross Sea sector (${\sim}180^{\circ}W$), and Australia sector ($120^{\circ}E-140^{\circ}E$), and these variations are quite similar to the previous studies. Therefore, it is expected that the detection approach for the PF position applied in this study and the final composite have a value that can be used in related research to be carried out on the long term time-scale.

Review on factors affecting the optical properties of dental zirconia (치과용 지르코니아의 광학적 성질에 영향을 미치는 요소에 대한 문헌고찰)

  • Clinical applications of translucent zirconia as well as traditional zirconia (3 mol% yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal, 3Y-TZP) are increasing. For this reason, studies on factors affecting the optical properties of dental zirconia have been continuously reported. The optical effect of dental zirconia may vary depending on the yttria content, the thickness of the prosthesis, the sintering process, polishing, glazing and cementation in laboratory and clinical procedures. Increasing the yttria concentration can reduce the masking effect. Translucency decreases as the thickness of the restoration increases, but the required thickness may vary depending on the properties of the zirconia block. The high-speed sintering method can shorten the manufacturing time, but in some cases, the translucency of the prosthesis may decrease. In addition, the optical properties can be affected by the surface roughness of zirconia and the polishing process. The use of an appropriate colored cement can help with the masking effect of zirconia and can be useful for color matching for more esthetic results.

Preferred masking levels of water sounds according to various noise background levels in small scale open plan offices (소규모 개방형 사무실 배경 소음 레벨에 따른 최적 물소리 마스킹 레벨)

  • This study aims to investigate the preferred sound level of water sound for various levels of open-plan-office noise regarding soundscape quality and speech privacy. And assessment of the work efficiency of the water sound. For the laboratory experiment, office noise was recorded using a binaural microphone in a real open-plan office. For the assessment of the soundscape quality and speech privacy, Overall Soundscape Quality (OSQ) and Listening Difficulty (LD) were evaluated under three different sound levels (55 dBA, 60 dBA, and 65 dBA) and five different signal-to-noise ratios (SNR -10 dB, -5 dB, 0 dB, +5 dB, and +10 dB). After the evaluation, the preferred SNR was proposed according to OSQ and LD. For the assessment of to work efficiency of water sound, this study evaluated the cognitive performance of both of the condition noise only and combine the water sound with office noise. The results showed that LD increased as the water sound level increased, but OSQ decreased. When the water sound level was more than the office noise level, the OSQ decreased from noise only. Therefore, considering OSQ and LD, the preferred SNR of water sound was -5 dB for all noise levels. At the preferred level of water sound, the cognitive performance results were shown to decrease at 55 dBA compared to noise only, but at 60 dBA and 65 dBA combine the water sound results were increased than the noise only.
