  • Region-of-Interest is the region within the image selected for the users needs. The development of multimedia has made the expectation of image telecommunication higher, but the usage of the image, image transmission time, and image storage create problems. When transmitter or the receiver stops transmission at some point, we can still see the general image and the ROI maintains better image quality if the ROI is specified beforehand. In this paper, three methods are proposed and constructed for the transmission of ROI. In the first method, the ROI and the background are separated and then encoded as described above. The second method is to encode without separating the ROI and the background. The masked region is scaled and the coefficients are increased, then the region is transmitted first. The third method is the loseless coding of the ROI. For loseless coding, real number tap cannot be restored perfectly due to the rounding error, so the method of using integers is used. The proposed method shows a better performance than EZW even in case of ROI's PSNR at quality of 40 dB.

  • In this study, plastic detection technique was developed, applying remote sensing technology as a method to extract plastic wastes, which is one of the big causes of concern contributing to environmental destruction. It is possible to extract areas where plastic (including polypropylene and polyethylene) wastes are prominent, using ASTER data by taking advantage of its absorptive characteristics of ASTER/SWIR bands. The algorithm is applicable to define large industrial wastes disposal sites and areas where plastic greenhouses are concentrated. However, the detection technique with ASTER/SWIR data has some research tasks to be tackled, which includes a partial secretion of reference spectral, depending on some conditions of plastic wastes and a detection error in a region mixed with vegetations and waters. Following results were obtained after making comparisons between several detection methods and plastic wastes in different conditions; (a)'spectral extraction method' was suitable for areas where plastic wastes exist separated from other objects, such as coastal areas where plastic wastes drifted ashore. (single plastic spectral was used as a reference for the 'spectral extraction method') (b)On the other hand, the 'spectral extraction method' was not suitable for sites where plastic wastes are mixed with vegetation and soil. After making comparison of the processing results of a mixed area, it was found that applying both 'separation method' using un-mixing and ‘spectral extraction method’ with NDVI masked is the most appropriate method to extract plastic wastes. Also, we have investigated the possibility of reducing the influence of vegetation and water, using ASTER/TIR, and successfully extracted some places with plastics. As a conclusion, we have summarized the relationship between detection techniques and conditions of plastic wastes and propose the practical application of remote sensing technology to the extraction of plastic wastes.

  • A Compton X-ray backscatter technique has been developed to quantitatively assess impact damage in quasi-isotropic laminated composites made by a drop-weight tester. X-ray backscatter imaging system with a slit-type camera is constructed to obtain a cross-sectional profile of impact-damaged laminated composites from the electron-density variation of the cross section. A nonlinear scattering model based on Boltsman equation is introduced to compute Compton X-ray backscattering field for the defect assessment. An adaptive filter is also used to reduce noises from many sources including quantum noise and irregular distributions of fibers and matrix in composites. Delaminations masked or distorted by the first delamination are detected and characterized effectively by the Compton X-ray backscatter technique, both in width and location, by application of error minimization algorithm.

An adaptive filter is applied to the Compton backscattering data for the reconstruction and noise reduction from many sources including quantum noise, especially when the SNR(signal-to-noise ratio) of the image is relatively low. A nonlinear reconstruction model is also proposed to overcome distortion of the Compton backscatter image due to attenuation effects, beam hardening, and irregular distributions of the fibers and the matrix in composites. Delaminations masked or distorted by the first few delaminations near the front surface are detected and characterized both in width and location, by application of an error minimization algorithm.

  • Using various satellite measurements in UV, visible and IR, diverse algorithms to retrieve aerosol information have been developed and operated to date. Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) onboard the Himawari 8 weather satellite was launched in 2014 and has 16 channels from visible to Thermal InfRared (TIR) in high temporal and spatial resolution. Using AHI, it is very valuable to retrieve aerosol optical properties over dark surface to demonstrate its capability. To retrieve aerosol optical properties using visible and Near InfRared (NIR) region, surface signal is very important to be removed which can be estimated using minimum reflectivity method. The estimated surface reflectance is then used to retrieve the aerosol optical properties through the inversion process. In this study, we retrieve the aerosol optical properties over dark surface, but not over bright surface such as clouds, desert and so on. Therefore, the bright surface was detected and masked using various infrared channels of AHI and spatial heterogeneity, Brightness Temperature Difference (BTD), etc. The retrieval result shows the correlation coefficient of 0.7 against AERONET, and the within the Expected Error (EE) of 49%. It is accurately retrieved even for low Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD). However, AOD tends to be underestimated over the Beijing Hefei area, where the surface reflectance using the minimum reflectance method is overestimated than the actual surface reflectance.

  • This thesis is on the purpose of seeking for the possibility of a mechanism in interpreting, analyzing and criticizing cartoons which are applied to the concept of "the gaze" based on "the otherness of vision", which states a pluralistic visual world. It proves that cartoons are in line with other art works that are the subject to "lack and desire"; the gaze, greets reality and acts as an important criterion of analyzing and criticizing the trend in contemporary art, in which the cartoon expresses the gaze in harmony within its work of art. In this thesis, the artist, Kang Doh-ha structuralized ambiguous and difficult forms of art as he has cumulated experimental minds by working in an indie cartoon plane for a long period of time. Among his works of art, he identified the "invisible world" through his piece "Kubrik". Therefore, he represented: a metaphor and a metonymy, an ambiguously situational expression, an intentional and emotional error, the structure of individuality and integration, and finally tension beyond its meaning through use of 'the gaze' that is both the cause and the subject of a desire in the visible world which Lacan academized when he interpreted and analyzed "Kubrik". The concept of the gaze can be used in a variety of ways to display one another's presence in relation each character, revealing a spot of lack by staring back at readers or audiences and furthermore, to analyze and criticize the hidden side of the art piece by critics. The most important details are the artist's gaze, which is seen in the eyes of the analysis and also his or her criticism of the cartoon, which functions as a metaphoric screen in which the subject himself or herself betrays the law of desires thus enabling the violent and cruel reality to be masked and indulged in plays. This will serve as an element that will lead into an art as well as control the degradation to just a piece of enjoyment with the cartoon remaining only within the visual world.
