This study is designed to review the methods of duplicate copies decision making in the academic library. In this thesis, I surveyed queueing & markov model, statistical model, and simulation model. The contents of the study can be summarized as follows: 1) Queueing and markov model is used for one of duplicate copies decision-making methods. This model was suggested by Leimkuler, Morse, and Chen, etc. Leimkuler proposed growth model, storage model, and availability model through using system analysis method. Queueing theory is a n.0, pplied to Leimkuler's availability model. Morse ad Chen a n.0, pplied queueing and markov model to their theory. They used queueing theory for measuring satisfaction level and Markov model for predicting user demand. 2) Another model of duplicate copies decision-making methods is statistical model. This model is suggested by Grant and Sohn, Jung Pyo. Grant suggested a model with a formula to satisfy the user demand more than 95%, Sohn, Jung Pyo suggested a model with two formulars: one for duplicate copies decision-making by using standard deviation and the other for duplicate copies predicting by using coefficient of variation. 3) Simulation model is used for one of duplicate copies decision-making methods. This model is suggested by Buckland and Arms. Buckland considered both loan period and duplicate copies simultaneously in his simulation model. Arms suggested computer-simulation model as one of duplicate copies decision-making methods. These methods can help improve the efficiency of collection development and solve some problems (space, staff, budget, etc, ) of Korean academic libraries today.

Availabilities of subsea Blowout Preventers (BOP) in the Gulf of Mexico Outer Continental Shelf (GoM OCS) is investigated using a Markov method. An updated ${\beta}$ factor model by SINTEF is used for common-cause failures in multiple redundant systems. Coefficient values of failure rates for the Markov model are derived using the ${\beta}$ factor model of the PDS (reliability of computer-based safety systems, Norwegian acronym) method. The blind shear ram preventer system of the subsea BOP components considers a demand rate to reflect reality more. Markov models considering the demand rate for one or two components are introduced. Two data sets are compared at the GoM OCS. The results show that three or four pipe ram preventers give similar availabilities, but redundant blind shear ram preventers or annular preventers enhance the availability of the subsea BOP. Also control systems (PODs) and connectors are contributable components to improve the availability of the subsea BOPs based on sensitivity analysis.

This paper proposes the enhanced faulty node detection scheme with hybrid algorithm using Markov-chain model on BCH (Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem) code in naval distributed control networked systems. The probabilistic model-driven approach, on Markov-chain model, in this paper uses the faulty weighting interval factors, which are based on the BCH code. In this scheme, the master node examines each slave-nodes continuously using three defined states : Good, Warning, Bad-state. These states change using the probabilistic calculation method. This method can improve the performance of detecting the faulty state node more efficiently. Simulation results show that the proposed method can improve the accuracy in faulty node detection scheme for real-time naval distributed control networked systems.

Hidden Markov Model(HMM) has a doubly embedded stochastic process with an underlying stochastic process that can be observed through another set of stochastic processes. This structure of HMM is useful for modeling vector sequence that doesn't look like a stochastic process but has a hidden stochastic process. So, HMM approach has become popular in various areas in last decade. The increasing popularity of HMM is based on two facts : rich mathematical structure and proven accuracy on critical application. In this paper, we applied continuous HMM (CHMM) approach with AR coefficient to detect and predict the chatter of lathe bite and to diagnose the wear of oil Journal bearing using rotor shaft displacement. Our examples show that CHMM approach is very efficient method for machine health monitoring and prediction.
A non-homogeneous markov model which is able to simulate hourly rainfall series is developed for estimating reliable hydrological variables. The proposed approach is applied to simulate hourly rainfall series in Korea. The simulated rainfall is used to estimate the design rainfall and compared to observations in terms of reproducing underlying distributions of the data to assure model's validation. The model shows that the simulated rainfall series reproduce a similar statistical attribute with observations, and expecially maximum value is gradually increased as number of simulation increase.

The limitations of existing Markov chain model for reproducing extreme rainfalls are a known problem, and the problems have increased the uncertainties in establishing water resources plans. Especially, it is very difficult to secure reliability of water resources structures because the design rainfall through the existing Markov chain model are significantly underestimated. In this regard, aims of this study were to develop a new daily rainfall simulation model which is able to reproduce both mean and high order moments such as variance and skewness using a piecewise Kernel-Pareto distribution. The proposed methods were applied to summer and fall season rainfall at three stations in Han river watershed in Korea. The proposed Kernel-Pareto distribution based Markov chain model has been shown to perform well at reproducing most of statistics such as mean, standard deviation and skewness while the existing Gamma distribution based Markov chain model generally fails to reproduce high order moments. It was also confirmed that the proposed model can more effectively reproduce low order moments such as mean and median as well as underlying distribution of daily rainfall series by modeling extreme rainfall separately.
We consider a nonlinear AR-ARCH type process subject to Markov-switching and give sufficient conditions for geometric ergodicity of the process. Existence of moments is also obtained.

In industry, various rotating machinery such as pumps, gas turbines, compressors, electric motors, generators are being used as an important facility. Due to the industrial development, they make high performance(high-speed, high-pressure). As a result, we need more intelligent and reliable machine condition diagnosis techniques. Diagnosis technique using hidden Markov-model is proposed for an accurate and predictable condition diagnosis of various rotating machines and also has overcame the speed limitation of time/frequency method by using compensation of the rotational speed of rotor. In addition, existing artificial intelligence method needs defect state data for fault detection. hidden Markov model can overcome this limitation by using normal state data alone to detect fault of rotational machinery. Vibration analysis of step-up gearbox for wind turbine was applied to the study to ensure the robustness of diagnostic performance about compensation of the rotational speed. To assure the performance of normal state alone method, hidden Markov model was applied to experimental torque measuring gearbox in this study.
In this paper we proposed a vision based realtime hand gesture recognition method. To extract skin color, we translate RGB color space into YCbCr color space and use CbCr color for the final extraction. To find the center of extracted hand region we apply practical center point extraction algorithm. We use Kalman filter to tracking hand region and use HMM(Hidden Markov Model) algorithm (learning 6 type of hand gesture image) to recognize it. We demonstrated the effectiveness of our algorithm by some experiments.
In this paper, we present the longitudinal Markov binary regression model with t-link function when its transition order is known or unknown. It is assumed that logit or probit models are considered in binary regression models. Here, t-link function can be used for more flexibility instead of the probit model since the t distribution approaches to normal distribution as the degree of freedom goes to infinity. A Markov regression model is considered because of the longitudinal data of each individual data set. We propose Bayesian method to determine the transition order of Markov regression model. In particular, we use the deviance information criterion (DIC) (Spiegelhalter et al., 2002) of possible models in order to determine the transition order of the Markov binary regression model if the transition order is known; however, we compute and compare their posterior probabilities if unknown. In order to overcome the complicated Bayesian computation, our proposed model is reconstructed by the ideas of Albert and Chib (1993), Kuo and Mallick (1998), and Erkanli et al. (2001). Our proposed method is applied to the simulated data and real data examined by Sommer et al. (1984). Markov chain Monte Carlo methods to determine the optimal model are used assuming that the transition order of the Markov regression model are known or unknown. Gelman and Rubin's method (1992) is also employed to check the convergence of the Metropolis Hastings algorithm.
