  • The objected of this study were to investigate how social class system influences family life, especially, marital relationship through area of marital satisfaction and marital stability and to find out influences of variables related to marital stability, that is, marital satisfaction, marital alternatives and barriers to marital breakup. The study was performed in a viewpoint of social exchange approach. Major findings were as follows; First, husbands and wive's marital satisfaction and marital stability differed significantly by their level of SES. The marital satisfaction scores and the marital stability score of higher class were higher than those of lower class. second, the higher the marital satisfaction scores and the barriers to marital breakup scores were, the higher the marital stability scores were. And the higher the marital alternatives scores were, the loser the marital stability scores were. Third, the independent influences of variables related to marital stability were differed by level of SES. The last, the typology of marital satisfaction and marital stability differed by level of SES. In lower class, the marriage type of low satisfaction and low stability is more than other types. But in middle and upper class, the most marriage type is high satisfaction and high stability marriage.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of marital characteristics on the marital stability among the elderly couples. Each participant was measured using a scale for the concept of marriage, a scale for marital coherence, a marital stress scale, a coping behavior scale and a marital stability scale. Elderly people who have a living spouse and who are living In Seoul were recruited. The data from two hundred and forty participants over 60-years-old were used in the final analyses. Major findings are as follows First, demographic factors such as educational level, health, economic status, the main source of income, and employment status appeared to significantly predict the elderly folks'marital stability Second, gender seems to be a factor In elderly couples'experience of marital stability. Husbands perceived marital stability to be higher than wives did. Third, the perception of marital stress, positive coping behavior and marital coherence influence the marital stability of the elderly couples. That is, the less elderly couples perceived marital stress and the less they relied on negative coping behaviors, the higher they perceived marital stability. These results imply that a healthful coping behavior to marital stress is important in enhancing marital stability for elderly couples.

  • The purpose of this study is to search a tendency of marital stability, and to identify the variables influencing on marital stability of urban couples. The sample was selected from the married couples living is Seoul. Total sample consisted of 476 spouses(238 couples) finally selected datum sources. The data were analyzed by the statistical method such as the fator analysis, frequency distribution, percentile, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and χ2 test analysis. The main results were as follows ; 1) In general the score of marital stability of urban couples was somewhat high. 2) Among the related variables, socio-demographic variables such as Socio-Economic Status(SES), religion, social background have turned out to be significant on the marital stability, Also, marital satisfaction and attitude toward divorce influenced marital stability. 3) The important influential variables on the marital stability were in the order of marital satisfaction, attitude toward divorce, ears of marriage. 4) Four types of marital stability are identified based on marital satisfaction and attitude toward divorce. Among the surveyed couples, 39.7% showed the most ideal pattern in the sense that they show high scores on marital satisfaction and negative attitude toward divorce. On the other hand, 25.2% showed high psychological instability that they show low scores on marital satisfaction and positive attitude toward divorce. • The controversy between Lewis and Spanier's theory and Thomas and kleber's theory on marital satisfaction and marital stability was tested empirically. The results show that while marital satisfaction was the best predictor for marital stability the impact of alternative attractions and external pressures to remaim married was more complicated than both theories predicted depending on the nature of alternative attractions. Thomas and Kleber's theory was supported in most of groups Contrary to Lewis and Spanier's theory alternative atteractions did not negatively affect marital stability of marriages of high qulity. Contrary to both theories external pressures to remain married was not an important predictor of marital stability . In some cases high external pressures to remain married even lowered marital stability. The validity of both theories are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of family-of-origin, personal and spousal characteristics, mediated by communication and problem-solving behavior, on marital quality and stability. On the basis of previous literature, the theoretical model was specified, estimated, and evaluated for adequacy of statistical fit for samples of 214 married women. Although the initial model was not supported by data, the revised model fitted the data adequately. Results of structural equation modeling indicated family-of-origin and communication behavior directly affected marital quality. However, the personal and spousal characteristics were linked with marital quality and stability only if they were mediated by communication and problemsolving behavior. Communication behavior was strongly related to marital quality and stability both directly and indirectly through problem-solving behavior. The model also showed marital quality can be an antecedent variable for marital stability. The findings of results is to generate more broad-minded thinking about how communication behavior, marital quality, and marital stability are interrelated.

  • This article reviewed the research on factors associated with marital quality and stability. Three major categories of factors were described, including background and context, individual traits and behaviors, and couple interactional processes. This review highlighted findings from cross-sectional and longitudinal studies of the prediction of marital quality and stability. Particular attention was given to marital instruments and procedures that had a solid empirical foundation for understanding the concepts related to measure of marital quality and stability. Also, empirically based intervention programs that had been designed to prevent marital distress and divorce were investigated to figure out the relationship between communication factors and conflict resolution styles. Finally, three theoretical frameworks were drawn from empirical literatures, marital measurment instruments, and programs for marital strength to predict factors associated with the marital quality and stability. Recommendations for future research and implications were described.

The major findings of this study are as follows: the factors associated with marital satisfaction and stability are different between gender. For married women the positive communication with spouse strongly had positive effect on women's marital satisfaction, while destructive conflict strongly had negative effect on women's marital stability. Otherwise, married men's positive communication with spouse was the most important factor in the marital satisfaction. The emotional support of family-of-origin strongly had effect on men's marital stability. This study reveals that the emotional support from families of origin have a direct effect on needs for affection and autonomy, positive communication, destructive conflict patterns, sexual satisfaction, marital satisfaction and stability. Therefore, the results could be useful resources for family counselors and researchers to develop educational program for married couples.
